I notice the AVC have considerably smaller tables than other cushions out there. Can anyone help explain the significance of this difference to me? Does a larger table make the diamond appear larger?

The preference by some people is for smaller tables on antique-looking, chunky cushions. Smaller tables also allow for a higher crown (generally), which is another feature of chunky cushions that some people look for. It also gives it that cushiony, pillow profile that some love.

However, the size of the table and the height of the crown is a personal preference in the end. Some people love it, some people prefer something larger or lower. Smaller tables and higher crowns sometimes suggest that the stone produces more fire (colored light flashes).

Does a smaller table make the stone look larger? I think it depends on how the rest of the stone looks and performs - and should be determined on a case by case basis. AVC's perform well so more of the light on the diamond is coming back to you, which should make the diamond appear larger than other similar size, poorly cut cushions.

Some think a larger table makes the stone look larger - because it appears there is more flat surface area. This may have an effect on fire, as well as lessen the "look" of a pillowy cushion though, if that's what you're looking for.

If I was concerned about size, I'd pay attention to the length and width measurements - the face-up measurements of the stones I'm looking at. You may find some stones in your carat range with extremely long width and length; however, there is probably a corresponding cost in terms of decreased light performance.

In the end, it's all personal preference and what you're comfortable with - and of course, your call.

Thanks for the thoughtful post. I appreciate the help!
