Tanzanite-I would greatly appreciate your thoughts...

I recently read about tanzanite, and found out that it is my birthstone and it was discovered the year I was born. I don't know anything about this new (to me!) and fascinating world of gemstones. I would now like to buy a tanzanite ring (2-3 carats, deep violet-blue), and cannot decide if I should buy a loose stone and settings separately, or the actual ring. In my internet searches I found these:

https://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=11118

https://www.gemrite.com/index.php?i...&rewrite=tanzanite-263-cts&controller=product

Which one do you think is worth buying? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I would avoid the first two listings because I think they are stock photos and not photos of the actual ring. What you get may be really different, badly cut or much paler in color.

Of the loose gems, I like the last one the most, and the first one from Litnon. If you have the budget, buying a certified stone and choosing your own setting, that's the most satisfying route, of course.

You can also look on Loupetroop or DiamondBistro as there are good deals to be found there. Here is a pretty one that meets your requirements, for example:

If you go the pre-loved route, do make sure you verify that the seller is legitimate and you pay by a method that allows recourse if the ring or stone is not as expected.

Note that tanzanite is pretty "soft" and easily damaged so it's not ideal for a ring -- especially a dominant-hand ring. Better for a pendant, imo, and it's about 1/10th the cost of an equally appealing sapphire.

Just wanted to expand on what @LilAlex was saying. Tanzanite also suffers from thermal shock, so please be carful not to expose it to sudden changes in temperature. (Washing your hands etc). Tanzanite are beautiful, and one of my favourite stones, but they do require some care to keep them looking their best. =)2

To be honest, I prefer the pre-treatment colors in petrol blue-green or even pink-purple, not the uniform blues, just my 10cents

Pet Peeve. Stones are not "certified". They get a report from an independent lab.

For the most part, unless you're buying a rare colored zoisite (like pink, green, or other color), tanzanite is routinely heated.

I think tanzanite is fine for a ring along with conditions; Don't wear the ring everyday, and make sure that the ring protects the stone well. (especially the edges) Yes just about ANY stone (including diamonds) can get abraisions along facet lines. How you care for the stones is key. And don't loop them every 20 seconds because you'll just make yourself crazy.

Did you buy the stone from Gemrite? It sold. By the way, my mom was born in December. December babies lucked out. You have four birthstones.

Thank you so much everyone for your advice!

Come back and show us your gem or ring when you have got it! Honestly, I wouldn't worry so much about having a tanzanite ring, as you said already it is a birthstone ring, not an e-ring you plan to wear everyday and everywhere. And now that people have told you what to look out for, you can take good care of it.

I will sure come back and show you the gem or ring when I will get it! I am still learning, browsing, etc... Should all gemstones come with a certificate? Please advise.

Hi everyone!
I want to share my picture with you. I bought the tanzanite from Gemrite, and John (from Gemrite) designed, cast and made my ring. The ring is beautiful, the picture doesn't do it justice! The stone is well cut with great brilliance. John was very nice and helpful, and the process went on smoothly. I highly recommend him for anyone looking for custom made jewelry.

My next stone will probably be an emerald cut morganite, I love that peach color! Any thoughts or suggestions? Maybe you can suggest a different stone with the same peach color. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Great choice of tani!! The ring looks gorgeous!!! Hand shots...please :-):appl:

Yes, hand shots please! From all angles! Looks like top colour, glad you had a good experience. Do share your next project too! My only suggestion is to go with rose gold for morganite, those two are just perfect together.

I second rose gold. I've seen morganite rings irl though don't own any. The rg helps to intensify the morganite's peach hues.

That is a beautiful tanzanite ring! It’s a very rich colour

Show us from the front!!!

Hand shots... it seems like I cannot capture the stones' brilliance, sorry :cry2:

Very pretty! What I try to do is capture it under the shade in a bright place. By under the shade I mean like under a table or umbrella, it keeps the glare off.

I think the second photo shows the color well. It’s a lovely blue! Maybe also try standing with your back to a window but not in direct sunlight, that’s how I like to photograph my rings.

Thank you everyone for your kind words!
