This is the cutest thread. I can''t believe some of the awesome designs you all have!!! I have one of an ancient symbol for strength on my upper right thigh, if you make an "L'' with your fingers, it''s about as long as the tip of your pointer to the crack of your thumb! I love it! Have never seen anyone else with it!!! It took an hour and forty-five minutes to do OUCH! Now this is going to sound weird coming from a Budget Analyst but I initially wanted a panther crawling up my thigh heheheh. Ok I''m a FREAK!

''Well it sure didn''t look like no butterfly to me, and I am sure when she is in her 60''s it''s gonna look like a vulture or something scary!'' ~ Mrs Darlin Joy

Too funny! One of my patients works as a radiologic tech and takes mammograms. She was telling me one time about all different breast tattoos that she''s seen and what they''d morphed into over time.
23.gif
She also had a story about a young woman sent by her doctor for a mammogram to check out a lump who refused to take out her nipple rings for the x-ray. As it turned out the nipple ring had caused the infection that made the lump in the first place.

I guess there are pros and cons to both piercings and tattoos. Piercings aren''t permanent but they can cause serious infections. I''ve seen many tongue piercings come into my office through the years and I warn them every time of the risk of broken teeth and infections. One young man we sent straight to the emergency room as his tongue piercing had infected and swelled his tongue to the point that we were worried about his airway becoming obstructed.

I''m just a wimp with piercings and tattoos. I had my ears double pierced in the 80''s and I couldn''t even handle that. I let the second hole grow over only 6 months after I did it.
I such a pansy ... I did the double pierced ear''s in the 80''s too, and I also let them close back up within 6 months!
20.gif

Yeah, I work in pre-op ... and you would not believe the different kinds and types of piercings! And where the piercings are! It just cracks me up when we get a young guy or girl in and we ask them all sorts of questions, and when we get to the piercing part and they say yes, we are required to tell them that they have to take them out prior to surgery. Oh my gosh ... you would not believe the fuss! But we just tell them, hey ... metal can heat up, and cause 3rd degree burns ... you really want a 3rd degree burn down there?
23.gif
Metal can arch too ... you wanna take the chance? You would be surprised at how many would take the chance ... we just tell them if it doesn''t come out, we have to notify the surgeon, and cancle the surgery. Sure we can ground the patient, but it doesn''t alway work, and burns result.

We have gotten some very serious infections with the tongue piercings too! Can anyone say "Endocarditis". Basically it''s when the bacteria travels from the wound site to the heart, and you got big trouble! Yeah, breathing problems is another big one, abcesses, etc...
32.gif

Ok, enough for now ... I am starting to cringe again ... don''t want to start yelling "Aaarrrr! cause everyones in bed".

I have one!
It's a tiny daisy on the inside on my right ankle. I don't have a picture, but it's similar to Tiffany & Co.'s Paloma Picasso's daisy flower:

I have 3. First one is of a dragon peeking through clouds, size is about 8'' x 5'' on my back where my right shoulder blade is located. Second one is my last name and ''Trunks'' the purple hair guy from Dragonball Z series on my lower back on the left side. Everything is in black except for his hair, which is purple.

The last one is the number 23 is Chinese characters on my left hand, located right at the joint area that connects my thumb to my hand. That one is in baby blue and slightly less than an inch long.

If I can go back and do it all over again, I''d probably only get one large dragon on my back.

Why the Trunks? (I know who you''re talking about though...lol)
Just curious if it has a meaning to you, or you just liked that character?

And do you have any pics of the dragon!? I''m interested to see the style!
1.gif

My bf has a LARGE dragon tattoo stretching from one shoulder- wrapping across his back and coming down over the top of the other shoulder onto his chest. It''s in shades of black and grey and it''s GORGEOUS
30.gif
all the detail....it was mucho expensivo and took a long time to complete LoL and it''s oh-so-sexy on him
9.gif

Wow...I would have NEVER expected everyone to have so many tattoos! I want mine really bad now

I''m such a dork, I know who Trunks is too. My nephew (and fiance) love that show and I get forced to watch it. Not bad though, Trunks and his dad are my favorites.
5.gif

The dragon tattoo sounds awesome. I had a boyfriend in high school who had mirrored dragons on each shoulder blade. They were amazingly done and had so much detail. My fiance wants to get a tattoo of Spider-Man hanging from a web upside down on his shoulder. I''m trying to talk him out of it, though. I like Spidey, but not for something permanent on your body. Not to mention it''d be really expensive because of all the detail.

Anyone have a dragon tattoo already? What style you go for? Asian style or fairytale dragon style? (sorry..dunno what that would be called...you know what I mean though....castles, knights, horses, etc...)

Here's my bf's aforementioned dragon tattoo.... (sorry crappy pics...they're not actually OF his tattoo..I just cut them out of random pics we've taken)

Front view (you can see it goes from one side to the other...)

beautiful, huh?

The dragons my ex had were very, very similar to this one. He had one on each shoulder blade and they face each other.

Ohh that''s like a tribal version of a dragon. Very unique...I like it

I love this thread. I have four. they are all together on the same right calf muscle. The first one I got when me and my then FI broke up, it''s of a butterfly it''s like its profile and then the wings conect and then you see it with it''s wings spand out. then I''ve got my name a right above my ankle, right above it I have a cloud of dust and smoke with a red rose coming out of it, and before me and my husband ever even got engaged I went and had his name put above the rose.
face6.gif
I''ll take and post some pics.

My tattoo! I got it a year ago. The photo was taken about two hours later, so my leg is still red.

tatooR002.jpg

Surprised?
2.gif

Anchor (the name makes sense now, ha ha) why did you decide to get an anchor? Is it a symbol of something special? I like the color it is..

I put a lot of research into it. After all, not unlike my future engagement ring, this tattoo is going to last forever!
2.gif

I've always loved water and the sea. I even started a degree in marine biology, unfortunately I've been very disappointed with the program and the college so I'm changing schools to pursue a biology degree in ecology and conservation. An anchor also represents stability and security, which is something I particularly need and strive for in its every aspects. It also brings to mind strength, both physical and of mind, confidence and determination.

The rune at the tip is the dagaz.

ðagaz : day
Phonetic equivalent: d (pronounced as 'th', as in 'this')
DIVINATORY MEANINGS:
happiness, success, activity, a fulfilling lifestyle, satisfaction
MAGICAL USES:
to bring a positive outcome
ASSOCIATED MYTHS & DEITIES:
Sunna, Baldr, Nerthus, Yggdrasil

ANALYSIS:
This rune effectively marks the end of the third aett, leaving only oþila to complete the cycle. As in the previous two aetts, ðagaz concludes the third with light and hope. However, while wunjo represented earthly glories and the sun, heavenly power, the day brings these two realms together, bringing the more abstract light and power of sowulo 'down to earth' and applying it to our everyday lives.
The shape of the rune itself denotes this kind of interconnection. It is reminiscent of gebo, with its balance of masculine, feminine and the four elements, but ðagaz makes further connections to the celestial and the realm of nature. Like inguz, it symbolizes harmony with one's environment. but again takes it a step further, implying a harmonious relationship with the spiritual environment as well. It is a bringing together of all six cardinal points - the four compass directions, the celestial realm above us where the Gods are thought to dwell; and that which is below - all the spirits of the earth and of nature. All of these things are balanced and integrated through ðagaz and brought into our daily lives.

Balance is also something I strive for. I'm a symbology buff, and I wanted something to represent what I love want and need in life.

The general motif and colours are based on two pictures I found. I drew it myself, and my sister, who draws beautifully, perfected the drawing to use as the model.

I LOVE that woman's dragon tattoo in the pic. That was my second idea for a back piece, but it just wasn't very suited to my body type and torso. My rose suits me much better. I'm a big believer in the more Japanese/SE Asian ethos of tattooing, where you have one motif, suited to your body, and all your tatts are related to that motif.

How much would that dragon set you back? Do you want it hand done?

For my second tattoo, I want a lower back piece, continuing the roses motif, possibly with a rampant panther woven into them or a pair of six shooters. I only want it either when I hit 30 or after I have children, though. That way the skin will have already stretched.

ETA: this was supposed to quote a post above with the oriental dragon/koi picture on the woman in the bath...oops

Also, a tattoo horror story that occured to me:

So Angelina Jolie has this tattoo on her belly that says "quod me nourit me detruit" right? (what nourishes me destroys me). Best diet tattoo EVER if a little creepy (no one in the press ever seemed to catch onto it as a diet motivator, since if you eat too much the tatto will stretch...

And now she''s pregnant. Ouch.

I have a small daisy on the small of my back. I got it as a symbol (at 21) to remember my best friend who died in a car accident (hit by a drunk driver). He had written me a poem comparing me to a white daisy back in elementary school and drawn a picture of one, so I had the drawing tattooed on me when he passed away. The only problem (although some say it''s a blessing in disguise) is I chose all light colors so the daisy is fading fast!

I think that''s one of the sweetest tattoo stories I''ve ever heard! It reminds me of my "first love" in second grade...our teacher had us each draw a name of a classmate to write an essay on, and he drew my name. He wrote about how I always wore a ribbon in my hair! My mom always put a grosgrain ribbon in my ponytails or whatever, and to this day I still love grosgrain ribbons. My china pattern is even "Grosgrain" by Vera Wang, lol!

You can always get your color redone, right Researcher? Maybe you could do it on the anniversary of the date of his passing or the date when he wrote the poem...

I finally managed to get a pic of my tattoo after much finagling...I'm thinking of adding some sort of lilly to the sides of my back (up higher) but I want blackwork real looking ones...I'll post pics if and when I work them out and get them done...dont mind the lines on my back, it's from my sweater : )

smallerme.jpg

Nope, don''t have any and don''t intend to get any.

sweetpea, those are precious!

a few people have mentioned piercings.....ack. I thought about trying one in a non-ear place just to see (bellybutton or something) and the thought of a big fat needle poking through just squicked me too badly. Ugh! I like them on OTHER people. Can''t do it, can-NOT handle it. You can draw on me with needles all day, just don''t stick them through my flesh...

it also bothers me that the only place that heals fully is your ears. if I could pierce something and then not put anything in there for weeks and have it be fine that''s one thing...but always having something in there is another.

ok. tattoos - i have 4
i have flowers and a butterfly on the side of my calf, an armband that''s tribal with barbed wire entwined, a wizzard on my shoulderblade and this amazingly cool looking ankh/eye of ra design just under my collarbone.

i used to have a nipple piercing, but i only had one and my husband is big on symmetry - so he said..get the other one done or take this one out, so i took it out! LOL!

my daughter has an industrial piercing and is getting her tattoo next weekend - it''s a fairy with ''Russian Butterfly" wings, in memory of her grandmother.

I remember when I got my first one that tats were still for bikers - which I was at the time, so it was ok
26.gif
now they are so very common, and there''s no stigma attached to them, which is a nice change!

I''ve heard the removal process really hurts, and saw a show on t.v. not long ago where a woman was going through getting some crazy tats from her "rebel" years removed. They showed her going through the process and she looked like she was in a lot of pain. I would love to see you start a new thread on the removal process, or at least let us know how it goes on this thread... I''m thinking of getting the one on my lower back removed someday because it has some negative memories attached. The one on my lower stomach (first one of the two I have) is sentimental and I don''t care if it stretches because it is easy to hide, but the back one I wasn''t really happy with from the begining, and rather than cover it, I''d like to have it removed. I''m hoping technology will improve in the coming years and maybe there will be a less painful removal process. Good luck to you though!

Monarch: I have my first appointment next Tuesday! The nurse who is doing the laser removal has told me that it hurts and that some have said that the process is painful. However, I asked her if it was as painful as "intense pulse light (IPL) photofacials," which i''ve had done in the past and she said about the same. If so, it shouldn''t be that bad. It should be fairly quick also since both tattoos are 1inch by 1inch. The area will have to be "dry-bandaged" for 24 hours. No shower for 24 hours and then you apply neosporin until the scabbing falls out by itself. I''ll start a new thread once on Tuesday when I get back!

I think addicting is the word here. I''m so addicted to them it''s crazy, but the fact that I don''t have the money to keep getting work done helps me stay in check.

I love piercings =)

I have 8- - - 7 in my ears and my belly button. I would like to add more to my ears though, and I LOVE lip rings and I totally want one but I would lose my job if I ever got it
face24.gif

My bf has a tongue ring...I used to want it but it just looks so painful- that''s A LOT of meat to go through >.< But it looks good on him so I''ll just live vicariously through his piercing

hahahhahaha

My daughter has her tat appointment on Saturday. She is still trying to figure out where to put it, which I think is amusing.
Truth is, she has no idea what to expect and I think she is in for a surprise when she realizes that regardless of where it goes - it''s gonna HURT getting it there!

that having been said, I''m sure it''s going to look beautiful! I can''t wait to see what the artists drawing looks like when we get there. We provided him a basic drawing of what she wanted and the pieces that it was assembled from. I''ll post a pic when it''s complete!

Rainbowtrout- it really depends on how long you have the piercing. I had to take out my belly button ring when it got scratched by my belt. Since I couldn''t really afford another one for a while, I left it out for about 2 months. The only one that will heal and close real fast is the tongue, since it''s just muscle tissue.

Miyabi_na- I love, love, love them too! I have 9- 5 in my ears, my nose, my tonue, one of the girls and my belly button.

Tats and piercings are truly addictive. It''s been 5 years since I''ve had anything done and I''m craving it. My now fiance and I are planning to go together and have work done before the wedding. We both have something prticular we want, but will probably both get matching Celtic love knots also.
