words of wisdom. if you have to wait for someone to come and relieve you, so you can take a break, don''t drink 2 whole bottles of water.

Gah I just had an a HGUE paper due at 745. It ended up being 47 pages. I REALLY dislike my teacher so it doesn''t help!

I stayed up till 4:30 working on it til I knew that everything I was writing after that point was useless. Then I went to bed, btu I kept waking up because my BF wasn''t there last night and I kept thinking people were in my apt!! I had to wake up at 6:30 to finish my sources cited page and then print it out- which took forever and I was STILL LATE!

I have a final at 12:45 which is on Intro to linguistics- EWE. Wish me luck. I hope you ladies are having more fun at work than I am over here!

LOL I know GGGoooodddd. How dare they make me work when I''m at work!

We''re crunching numbers today and I am already getting a headache

today will be a good day. today will be a good day. today will be a good day. today will be a good day...

Good luck asschers!!!! I just handed in a 35 pager on the Federal Rules of Evidence last week. It counted for my entire grade, so every morning is wrought with anxiety over checking my grade.

Ok... all of you that have completed undergrad...

When did you start applying for jobs? I feel weird applying before I''ve graduated, but I don''t want to wait anymore. Is it OK to start applying now?

YES!! I already had a job lined up almost at the beginning of my last semester.

Bah!

Now I feel like I''m behind. LOL.

I just feel weird about applying for jobs that require a degree when I don''t have one. I guess I''ll do it anyway! I''m scared I''m going to have to move out of Michigan to find anthing... I picked the worst year EVER to graduate college.

Elle,
I actually applied right after graduation. However, I do know plenty of people who have applied before graduation, and would tell employers that graduation is impending. I really think that it depends on the employer, but the people I know in this kind of situation said the employers hired them pending graduation. It doesn''t hurt to look, especially in this crappy economy.
BTW, I like the new avatar. You''re so pretty!!!

Of course! I started applying around January of that year and every single place I applied said it was not a problem. In fact, the job I took was awesome about this because they accommodated my work schedule to fit my school schedule until I finished.

Yeah, I''m so iffy about it. I graduate in 7 weeks. It seems silly to put it off, since by the time things are sent in, reviewed, and I''m contacted, It''ll probably end up being 3 or so weeks to go, and I''d really like to find a job ASAP. I guess I''m just apprehensive because so many people are out of work, why would they go with the *almost* graduated person when there''s probably 15 million other people who already have degrees and probably some experience. Especially in MI.

It''s so discouraging looking for jobs right now. I''ve been waiting so long to graduate, and now that its here... I''m a little bummed.

OK, awesome. I''ll start then. At least maybe I''ll feel like I''m making some sort of progress, then?

Gotta update that resume of mine....

Just put "Candidate for Bachelors degree in my field Expected date of graduation my date"

They'll see you're practically done.

You''re right that it''s competitive, and that not having experience will make it tougher, but employers do have reasons for wanting fresh grads, and they''ll view you the same now as 7 weeks from now. Keep your head up, your mind open to different types of employers and apply, apply, apply! Have you been to career services yet at your school to help you put together a strong resume?

boba.

We''re proud of you Elle. A degree, is a degree. It''s not easy working and going to school you know.

Are you applying to grad programs or are you taking a break?

Oops, sorry, I did not see/know that you''ve been in the working world already, disregard the more condescending parts of my posts

Haha, I know. I''m just teasing.

I am not doing anything grad-related yet. I will do it eventually, but I''d like to make sure I''m comfy in the jobs I *think* I want to do before I spend a bunch of money on a grad degree.

I''m undecided between HR/OD and Social Work. I dont know how much I can really do in SW w/o a masters. My major is sociology and my minor is business.

I''ve been working full time for 4 years now, in admin/secretarial type positions. I work at a law firm now, and my job is so boring I can''t even explain. I realize I am quite lucky to have a job right now though, so I''m trying to stay positive.

You're welcome elle!!!

work in social work/psychology, and in actuality, I've heard of people being laid off because of their experience. It happened to a friend of mine (who thankfully doesn't work where I work!!). My friend told me that the boss said they (my friend) were being let go because the company could get someone right out of college, and pay them an intro level salary to do the same work my friend was doing. That depends on the field, too, but social work, for example, has not seen a high number of layoffs (with the exception of the strange occurrence like my friend had). I typed this before I read you majored in sociology, lol! But I definitely have not seen many lay offs. I cruise career builder every now and then, and I definitely see a lot of social work jobs available. I wish you luck elle!!! And congrats on the upcoming graduation!!!!!!

Same here. My job is fully administrative and it can get very tedious. Because I''m in grad school it works for me. Plus they pay for my tuition, so that''s a HUGE plus.

If you decide to look into HR/OD, then you know who to talk to
28.gif

PrincessPlease: Thanks for the congrats! I''m very excited to finally be done. Hopefully I can find something sooner than later!

Bia: Man do I wish my work would pay tuition. They''ll only do it if it''s furthering your current position in the company... and it''s not really. I''d never work in HR at this company because their HR dept is in Downtown Detroit, and I live an hour away, and wouldn''t want to move closer to Detroit.

I will definitely consult you on HR if I go that way, my mentor!

I don't know much about Ritani, but supposedly they have a solid reputation.

You might find better luck either searching "ritani" on PS to see other people's experiences, or jumping into RockyTalky and getting some opinions.

thanks elle!!

(jumping in a little late)

Elle, have you thought of applying to non-profit orgs? It''s something that a lot of people forget about during their job search, but with a sociology/business background, I think it could be a pretty good option for you. And much less boring than a law firm.

Ummm.. YES!! hehe

I would love, love, love to work for a nonprofit. That would be the ideal for me. I''m hunting around for nonprofits near me, but not finding much job availability.

Non profit work is great, but just a warning that it doesn''t pay very well and has really long hours. Also, the competition can actually be fiercer for non-profit work than for for-profit work.

Also, move to Portland!

Ha! I was just talking to my mom about where I''d move if I left MI, and she said "WHY would you move to Portland?"

I am well aware that if I go into nonprofit, I will make nothing. However, at this point, I''ll take anything gives me some experience other than being someones assistant.

Man I can''t wait to not be an assistant.

LOL, I think a lot of people here would have the same reaction about moving to Michigan.

Portland is a great town--it actually doesn''t rain nearly as much as people say it does.
