The Official TTC Thread!

LC - Yes this is our very first month of no protection and hopefully timed BDing. Although I am a little nervous about overwhelming my hubs with "on-demand" sexy time. I'm not sure if he is at all prepared for what is coming his way and hope he will be a good sport about it. In fact our usual pattern sounds very similar to yours and your DH's - so the fact that one time, not so close to your O, day is VERY encouraging for me.

Clairtek - Thanks for your excitement for me! I went of BC about ten months ago to see what my cycles would be like but then went back on for a few months earlier this year, went back off BC at the end of June and now DH and I are both on the same page for this month. I am happy to finally make some progress in getting a family started. I also have a sister who is younger by a few years and always hoped that we might have kids at the same time, but she and her hubs don't seem too close to starting and I am getting nervous to wait any longer, especially if we end up going for two kids. Plus there is no garrantee that we will get preggers quickly given the 20% figure mentioned above.

I'm really excited to see what happens with you, since you are sort of doing what I'm doing (research and prep work before trying). Good luck!!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Thanks AMC, I have actually researched the heck out of TTC - it was my way of figuring out if I really wanted to become a mother. So it was kind of an online immersion therapy to help me visualize actually having a baby (and becoming a parent). This forum is amazing for that, so many experiences from ladies who aren't afraid to tell-it-like-it-is. Such a valuble resource so a big thank you to the ladies who add their experiences for those of us trying to make such a personal decision. - On the other hand, my DH thinks thinking/talking too much about future babies might jinx us - so at least I have an outlet here for my crazy!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Clairitek, thank you for the kind words. I am in a place of calm now about trying this month. Myself and my DH had a great conversation last night and I feel we are both on the same page with what we want. When do you normally O? Your OPK's may be getting darker because it is fast approaching? I'd continue doing them twice a day if possible.

Megumic, thank you! I am ready to roll! I told my DH to be ready and willing. :naughty: Once i got to talk to him last night, I feel so much better and less stressed. The chances of multiples are low but if we did have twins we would be fine.

Missjaxon, thanks for popping in and sharing your story. Those pics are so cute!!!! The thought of having twins seems hard but exciting! Seeing all three of you together brought tears to my eyes. Thank you!

Dreamer, thanks for the words of wisdom. We are going to go for it. We will manage just fine with twins. I actually already started thinking about room arrangements in our house (I shouldn't get too far ahead of myself though) if we were to have twins. We want another baby and have once thought about having three children so we would be happy to welcome two!

AMC, I really like the dresses you picked. Maybe just let your bridesmaid where the straps during the dancing. That's a good compromise.

LC, wow your mom must have been busy! Three kids under 15 months!! Was your mom a stay at home mom? She must have had her hands full! Thanks for telling me about your relationship with your sister. That makes it all the more worth it to try this month.

Merry, good luck on your first month TTC. Maybe you will get lucky and not have to buy OPK's!

AFM, I had a wonderful conversation with my DH last night. He is such an amazing man and I am lucky to have him. When I explained that I will be releasing 2-3 eggs and that there is a possibility of twins, he paused and then turned to me and said that secretly he always thought it would be cool to have twins! I couldn't believe it as I was worried that he was going to be so worried about multiples. That put me at ease. He said that we can handle it, and that Evan will love having younger siblings. It is so true! It will be hard in the beginning, but we'll get thru it. My parents and his mom are nearby so we will have a lot of help. We are going to just go with the flow and what is meant to be is meant to be. We will be just fine. We have plenty of room at our house and we just bought a new car that has three rows of seating, so we would be all set if it were to happen. I am excited to try again. I really really hope and pray we get at least one sticky beaner! CD12 here and planning to BD tonight! No sign of a smiley on my OPK yet though!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Funny story- last night my fiance and I were at Target and we walked past the baby section. The fiance pointed out something that was really cute. So I course I said "I want a baby, why do I have to wait so long, I want one nooooooooooow" and his response? "Um, what do you mean wait so long. We are going to start trying on our wedding night." Ahhh, yes perspective. Apparently I need a hobby to keep my mind occupied over the next few months, since wedding planning isn't cutting it. Neither is 1/2 marathon training.

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Lizzy: I am so excited for you and your DH and hoping, wishing and praying you have at least one sticky bean this cycle. You sound so positive and at peace with the decision to give it a try. I hope your eggies can sense that (Okay. I know that's not scientifically possible... but I do believe in the power of positive thinking!)

Merry: I'm glad that you use PS to talk about your thoughts re TTC. My hubby is the same as yours: Overthinking and analyzing will do not any good (in his opinion). But I think it's great to be well informed! The reality is that it's hard not to think about TTC 24/7 when you're in the midst of it, so it's wonderful having this place to share thoughts/worries/excitement with women in similar situations.

Two questions for you wise women:

1) OPKs: Do you use Wondfos throughout your whole cycle, use the expensive store brands, or a combo? I'm thinking I like the ease of reading smiley faces, but those strips are so darn expensive. Anyone use CBE Fertility Monitor?

2) Any good birth documentary suggestions? I've watched The Business of Being Born and am on the hunt for something similar. Full disclosure, I'm a bit crunchy and super interested in unmedicated, midwife-assisted birth. I'd like something focused more on labor and delivery than a doc that is simply a dig on the American medical system.

Haha, yeah, I'm sure that would help with the baby obsession....hahahaha....
That did actually cross my mind, but I refuse to buy any baby stuff until I'm pregnant...I don't want to jinx anything. And if for some reason we end up having problems, I don't want to stare at a bunch of baby paraphernalia, you know?

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Yay Lizzy! I'm so excited for you that you are going to start trying again this cycle and that you and your husband are on the same page with all of this! You know what is funny? When my sister tried clomid she was really anxious about the possiblity of twins as well and weighed the pros and cons and fretted about it, but when they found out they were only having one, I think she was almost disappointed it wasn't twins :) My wish for you is that you have one healthy baby (or two)! And since you are such a conception machine, I'm sure you'll be getting another BFP this cycle. Man, I wish we were as fertile as you two!

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you that I have a facebook friend that I used to be friends with in high school who had a set of identical triplet boys 6 months ago AND she has a two year old boy! One of the babies had to have surgery and be in the hospital for a long time because of intestinal problems, but they appear to be coping well. I've sort of been stalking her updates :)

Clairitek, glad you found a thermometer you can both live with. I too have a large supply of dixie cups now. Funny to think that just 5 months ago, I would have been completely grossed out at the idea of peeing in a cup on a nearly daily basis. The things we do to have a baby!

MM, yay for being close to officially kicking of the BD'ing! My advice for you would be to keep everything as spontaneous and natural as possible in the beginning, so DH doesn't feel too much pressure. That's great that you are really starting to feel your maternal urges now. Unfortunately for me, I have had them ever since I met my DH and my siblings started having babies about 5 years ago. I'm so ready for a baby! I definitely have worn my DH out a few times with my baby and TTC talk. That's why I love this thread!

PPM, I can't help you out with documentaries, but I use a combo of wondfos and CBE digitals. I use the wondfos and then when it looks positive, I confirm with the digi. I'm pretty predictable, so I have managed to make a 20-pack of CBEs last 5 cycles, and I still have a couple left.

Sorry, if I missed anyone.

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Hi everyone!! Some days this thread goes so fast I can't keep up!

Claritek...are you temping by mouth?

Anyone else temping by mouth...I've heard sometimes it's not as accurate(I guess if you are a mouth breather)? Has anyone noticed if it's more accurate by mouth or vaginally?

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

A word from the very wise Mrs. Dreamer, if you pick one way to temp, you have to temp that way the whole cycle. You can't switch back and forth.

~LC

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Lizzy, I'm just popping my head in to tell you how much I'm rooting for you (and all the ladies here, obviously). I want you to get a sticky bean with every fiber of my body. You have a large group of random internet strangers sending you good luck vibes! I'll definitely be reading your updates!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Amc and Merry- The scientific side of me says that the 20% chance number is in regards to people who don't track cycles or time BDing. They just go for it whenever and sometimes it happens. Perhaps I am looking at this through rose-colored glasses but it seems to me that if there aren't any issues then well-timed BDing would yield higher than a 20% chance of pregnancy. I suppose this is one of the reasons I am trying to get an idea about my cycles now so that next spring when we are ready to go for it I will *hopefully* be able to not overwhelm DH with information and try without a ton of other steps (temping, peeing on things). I think that might be wishful thinking though. It will really depend on how repeatable my cycles are. If I O on the same day, +/- a day for several months in a row I will do my best to just leave the other stuff out of it.

Merry- Bummer that your sister and her DH aren't quite there yet, but it seems reasonable to think that your kids will be similar ages! I don't have any siblings but if things go as planned I will have an overlapping pregnancy or very close with some of my friends. At the very least we will have kids that are within a year of age to each other. I'm pretty stoked about that.

AMC- Some of the J Crew BM/special occasion dresess I have come with an interior corset type thing, too. At least a little belt that hooks on the inside of the dress to help give some support. Two of them have bands with several hooks on them or an actualy zippered interior band. Given how structured looking the Arabelle is I would venture a guess that it has more going on inside to help keep the shape. The Juliet doesn't strike me that way, though. I think it is less structured inside if that helps her/you make a choice between them.
As for a hobby- are you having a smallish wedding? Maybe as a thank you for coming to the wedding cruise you could write personal notes to everyone. This was something DH and I had planned on doing for our wedding (35 people) but never got around to it before the wedding. I even had fun DIYing some notecards to use! They had vellum sleeves and some ribbon on them as well! I still have them, actually. It would busy your hands and mind for a bit, though.

Lizzy- You're welcome! I am excited to hear that you are going to go for it, even with 2-3 ripe follicles! So wonderful that your DH is daunted by the idea of twins. The only small twins I've ever spent time around are Neatfreak's boys and they are really darling. I love watching them interact with each other and with adults. I haven't been using the OPKs every day but I do plan on doing them twice a day since I am using the cheapie Wonfo's. I figure I have 50 of them, why not using 10-15 a cycle? I don't think that DH has figured out why I bought bathroom cups and why two are in the trash. Thankfully our cats don't like to dumpster dive.

Missy and LC- I temp orally. I haven't ever done it vaginally but I might consider it if my temps aren't showing any sort of detectable pattern. This month will be really telling! I would love to keep using the same thermometer for one entire cycle but I know DH will go bonkers if I continue using the loud one. I think I missed the "heat pocket" in my mouth this morning. I looked at the instructtions afterwards and I've probably been temping incorrectly all along. I put the tip too close to the front of my mouth and need to put it further back near my molars.

PPM- My dear friend StephB0lt read The Business of Being Born and said it was really interesting. Good luck finding some more information!

That is my thought as well. 20% just seems really low, but would make sense if it includes couples who don't really know the correct timing. I have two friends who have temped and they both got pregnant in the first couple of months. One friend got pregnant on the first month with each of her three pregnancies.

Thanks for the info about the dress. I really am leaning towards the Arabelle because it would look great with my dress.

Ohhh, thank you cards, that's a great idea. We'll (well, I'll) also be designing a welcome letter type of thing so I'll need to do that as well. Plus we are doing gift baskets for those who are cruising. So really I have LOTS of stuff to do, but what I want to do is make a baby...heehee...maybe we'll spend lots of time practicing.

BTW, I called and made an appointment with my new OB/GYN today. I'm really glad I did since the earliest appointment is September 16 and I'll probably need to start BCP in late September in order to switch my cycle around.

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Just a quick drive by.. hope i will get some time tonight to catch up.

AF showed up yesterday. The horrible witch came at 3am no less. In the words of Stephanie Tanner... "How Rude!" :cheeky:

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

HOT, so sorry this cycle didn't work out for you. Darnit anyway. Keep on keeping on!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

HOT - Sorry about AF coming =( that is really rude of her. Gah!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

HOT: I am so sorry the wicked AF showed up. Yes, definitely, very rude of her! MP said it best, keep on keeping on! Wishing you best of luck on the next cycle!

MP: You keep on keeping on too! And hoping this cycle is the one for you. Any more interviews lined up? Hope work is still going well!

AMC: I love your wedding color scheme! Wish I was going on your wedding cruise!

Claritek: Glad the new thermometer is working out better. Your DH must be happy!

Missy: I've always temped orally and it's work fine for me. It's amazing to see the shift in temps after you O. Don't worry too much about the inconsistency of the temps before you O bc the biphasic pattern is usually pretty clear (well, in my case it is).

Pilsn: I used the Wondfos 2x a day and once it looks like a positive, I used the smiley digital OPKs to confirm.

Mary: What you're feeling is completely normal. I felt the same way before I had DD. I just never had that maternal instinct and then one day it just hit me and I became baby-crazy. Have fun this weekend :naughty:

Lizzy!!!! I am so so so happy to hear that you guys are going to give it a try this cycle. I'm hoping with all my might that you'll have a sticky bean (or two!) this cycle. Continued good thoughts to you my dear!

Lots of ladies O'ing this week or beginning of next week! (How scary is it to know that?) Hope you all have fun this weekend, and go catch that egg (or 2!) :naughty:

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

I thought I would share that I have managed to somehow install a Pavlovian response in myself. DH got up at 2 am last night to turn off our fan. It beeps when you turn it off. Upon hearing the beep, I reached over and stuck my thermometer in my mouth. I sat there for a second and then realized that it was in the middle of the night and not time to temp yet. This is going to be a long road to TTC if I'm already doing these things!

Peed on 2 more OPKs (last night, CD 10, and this morning CD 11) and I think I was imagining the darkening of the one from yesterday morning. I don't see any difference between the first one and then the last two. If I have a "traditional" cycle I will O on Monday. Fingers crossed I catch it on the OPKs!

Thanks again for all of the help sorting myself out here. I know I'm not quite in the TTC pool yet but I really appreciate the support I am given. I can't WAIT until I can jump in with both feet!

Ditto to everything, even our cycles. I'm on CD12 and got a negative OPK this morning (as expected). I can't wait to officially start TTC!

Sort of OT question- Do any of you have thyroid issues? I was reading about low BBT and how it's a symptom of hypothyroidism. My average temp over all is 96.98 and in the pre-ovulatory phase it's around 96.7. Apparently a BBT consistently lower than 97 is abnormal. Then I remembered that I had my thyroid tested a year ago and it was 3.57, with normal (according to the labs) being .45-4.5. Well, upon further research I found that the new standards have changed the range so that over 3 is too high, and you are supposed to be around 1. I've made an appointment with my doc to get retested, but thought I would post here as well. It would actually make a lot of sense and explain why I'm always cold, always tired, and can't lose weight (which usually I'm pretty successful at doing when I set my mind to it).

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Sha, thanks so much for popping in with your support. Yes, I am on Clomid this month. No IUI though, just natural. I have 2-3 follicles that look like they will release eggs this month. I am just hoping that at least one of them will stick. You did IUI right? Do you know how many follicles you had that were going to release before you got pregnant? I'd love to hear more about it!

Clairitek, it sounds like you have already jumped into the TTC pool!!! I think we are going to be o'ing around the same time. It'll be nice to have a 2ww buddy!

Ally, hello lady! hope you are doing well! Great to see you!

HOT, sorry AF showed up! I was hoping this was your cycle.

NEL, hi!!! Thanks for the support. I feel I am due for some good news this cycle ya know? I am really positive and hopeful so I hope this will be my cycle!

Monkey, I can totally see where your sister was coming from. Once you get over the shock that you could possibly have two, I think you start to prepare yourself for two. I know I have been mentally preparing myself everyday now. Wow, your friend has triplet boys! Holy smokes!!!\

PPM, I recommend getting the cheapy OPK's and some digital ones. This way you can see the surge fading in and then confirm it via the digital.

AMC, it looks like your fiance is ready and willing as soon as you get married! That's awesome!

AFM, I am in a great mood! I am excited to be able to try this month and am so hopeful that things will work out. Today is CD13. We weren't able to BD last night because DH got a call and had to do some work. But tonight - GAME ON!!! No positive OPK yet, so we are in good shape!

I don't know of a movie but have you read Ina May Gaskin's books? She is a midwife and has a couple books that are really great preparation for natural labour. A local midwife or doula might also have a recommendation. When the Duggar's daughter in law had her second child she did a home birth and it was on a recent episode of the show. I thought it was a really great example of a natural labour and how it goes. Maybe you can find that on YouTube?

I had a midwife assisted, unmedicated-no-interventions, natural labour with my second son last month, and it was so great. Such a wonderful experience. Choosing the right attendant is so important IMO as my experience this second time was so different than the first. I'm going to post my birth story soon, if you are interested.

The thing about natural labour is you can't really tell much about how the experience is from watching a video I think. When a woman is in labour and coping really well she really turns inwards and looks like she is in a trance. Until transition when all heck breaks loose and the screaming begins ::)

Ally, thanks for replying...I know it's worked for you since you have proof of a BFP! I am rather obsessive with things and will probably move on to temping along with the OPKs next cycle if I have to!

AFM, nothing much going on yet. CD 15 for me. Still waiting for the line to darken on the OPKs, been the same color for a few days now.
But on a happy note...22 DAYS TIL MYRTLE BEACH!!! 8-)

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Ally, thanks for popping in! How are you doing? Have you shared news of your BFP yet or are you waiting awhile? No more interviews lined up, but I keep looking every couple of days for new postings. Things have been going okay here, but I have been working really long hours. It’s fine for now, but once we finally have a baby, this schedule will not do!

Clairitek the line may have been darkening, if you do O on Monday, you would probably get a positive OPK tomorrow or Sunday. When are you going to officially start TTC?

Sorry amc, I don’t have any info on thyroid issues, hopefully your doctor can shed some light on it for you. I remember reading about others on here who had lower BBTs, but still got pregnant. Try not to worry about all the what-ifs right now because there is no reason to believe you will have a problem getting pregnant. Just focus on your upcoming wedding, cruise and marriage. Such an exciting time!

Lizzy, you sound so good! I’m very excited for you! Hoping you get some good BD’ing in this weekend!

Missy, it might still just be too early for you, and you might not be completely regular for awhile, so just keep on testing. It’s nice that you’ve got a vacation to look forward to! Oh, and I always temped orally too and had no problem seeing a shift.

AFM, I’m CD11 or 12 and got a :)) on the OPK this morning, so I should be ovulating sometime this weekend. It’s nice when O happens to fall on a weekend. We’ll probably BD tonight and maybe once more this weekend and hope for the best. Hope everyone has a good weekend! Hopefully we’ll add a few more BFPs this month!

Thanks. I'm not really worried about it in terms of TTC, more like "wow if my thyroid has been off it would have been nice to know a year ago when I started gaining weight." :)

Missy: I've always temped orally and it's work fine for me. It's amazing to see the shift in temps after you O. Don't worry too much about the inconsistency of the temps before you O bc the biphasic pattern is usually pretty clear (well, in my case it is).

I temp by mouth, too -- no way am I sticking a cold thermometer anywhere else at the crack of dawn when I'm still half asleep!! Like ally, I think even if it's not absolutely accurate, it's still plenty good enough for charting purposes in most cases.

Clairitek, it sounds like you have already jumped into the TTC pool!!! I think we are going to be o'ing around the same time. It'll be nice to have a 2ww buddy!

Believe me, I would LOVE to your TWW buddy! Sadly, DH and I can't really start trying until next year... probably around April/May? We have a massive, once-in-a-lifetime vacation for two weeks in Tuscany in September 2012 so I don't want to be too far along then (or have an infant) and we didn't want to start trying until January 2012 at the earliest anyway (I only just started my career after 10 years of school in October 2010 so I wanted to settle in more). I'm just a pool-side lurker for the moment who is trying to sort out her cycles.

But yes, trying to get pregnant now would be awesome! Sigh. For now I will cheer you and the other active TTC-ers on!

Re: The Official TTC Thread!

Hi All - my husband and I have decided to try for a baby beginning in November of this year. I haven't done much research (other than talk to my doctor years ago). She said that I should stop the pill, get on prenatal vitamins once we start trying and that maybe I'd want to get some blood tests when we officially started trying.

I'm curious what others here suggest I do in order to maximize success in November?!

There are people here who know far better than I (and hopefully they will stop by with some details) but it seems that most people start taking their temperature with a basal body temperature thermometer (BBT) each morning (before you get out of bed or move around at all) to pinpoint ovulation (you will see a sustained upward temperature shift) and some use OPK strips as well to detect the hormone surge that also indicated ovulation. This should to help greatly with timing intercourse to get pregnant. You can order a BBT and Wondfo brand OPK strips (and pregnancy tests) that are also sometimes referred to as "internet cheapies" from Amazon. OPKs and pregnancy tests are pretty darn expensive in a regular drug store. You can also find a BBT in most drugstores and Target.

Welcome! I am not TTCing until next spring but am trying to sort out my cycles post-BCPs so I am sort of in the same boat as you for the moment. Good luck in November!
