Just curious ... anyone else still think about a piece of jewelry you passed up for one reason or another ... or that you saw on someone else and have never seen anything like it since?

I have a couple pieces like this that still haunt me to this day. One - a lovely, simple champagne-colored natural oblongish pearl bezel set in a tapered white metal ring setting - spied on the girl sitting next to me on an outback jeep tour of Saint Lucia. I ran into her several times that trip but never asked her where she got the ring! That''s what I get for shopping off of other people.

I have several name-brand, easily accessible but unaffordable items I long for: i.e. Jaeger LeCoutre Reverso watch in Stainless ... but I know I can always find those if I CAN afford them ... those fleeting one-of-a-kind brushes with perfection is what I''m most wondering about ...

Stories ladies?

Absolutely! Once, I had a ring on hold in a store and it was stolen. (It turned out that the robbery was an inside job.) Another time, I had been looking at a ring for a while (same store) and finally decided to buy it. When I walked into the store, they told me there had been a smash-and-grab robbery the day before and the ring was one of the ones that had been stolen. There''s one emerald ring that I decided against in the early 1980''s and I''m still kicking myself for not getting it.

The main regret is a pair of black opal drop earrings I saw about 8 years ago. They were only about $40 a few really beautiful sparks of color against a black background. I really wanted them but at that time I was a poor graduate student and was so poor would "borrow" umbrellas out of the lost and found rather than buy myself an umbrella.

Before that when I was out of college had a decent job and always wanted an emerald ring. There was a really pretty one in one of those museum catalogs. Yellow gold with an emerald shaped emerald set east west with two curliques on each side holding the emerald. But it was $300 and couldn''t justify spending that much on myself for a piece of jewelry. So, waited about six years later when I was getting married to get an emerald ring (different ring). That ring was very special to me. Unfortunately, I lost that ring a few years later (long story). I have a replacement emerald ring, which is very nice, but still miss my first emerald ring.
