@Burmesdaze thank you for the photos of your gorgeous cuprian. We are about to start on a ring/pendant convertible project, and I was wondering if you might be so kind as to start a new thread giving details of how yours was put together. It looks like the perfect convertible design to me.

Lol I won't have to resist (I would totally fail!) Bc it's being sent to my family directly. They know if it came to my house that box would be open in like 10 seconds

Hi prs,

@lovedogs gorgeous red spinel convertible shows the design very very well on the mechanism.

Your jeweller or their contacts have to have a mould for the mechanism already as it's very precise. Other parts of the ring can be customised. It's like a system of various modules.

Here's the only CAD I had of it but only shows top and side views.

Hi,
Am a Paraiba 'newbie' - and am hoping for guidance, thoughts and advice from the forum members .
Am looking for a present for my mother's birthday in Feb.
Her jeweler recommended "Paraiba" and showed me the stone in the photos.
The accompanying gemstone lab report states that this is a copper and manganese bearing tourmaline known in the trade as "Paraiba tourmaline" in the trade. Dimensions are 11.5mm X 9.3mm x 6.4mm. It also mentions "needle like inclusions".

What a beauty!!! Lovely colour and glow

Thanks PSers for your responses and views.
Am truly appreciative - since this is my very first Paraiba "encounter".
One can, of course, read up about Paraiba but nothing beats the opinions of Paraiba aficionados like yourselves.
Thanks very much.

So sweet of you Acinom!!!! Thank you! I am so happy that you like it too! I think it is a strong piece to start the new year with!

Woohoo! @lilmosun posted a ring with quartz and “leftover” Paraiba melee. What a stunning creation! Would love to know more about it. Such a beautiful and rich looking ring.
@lilmosun : please post a family pic of your jewelry with Paraiba.

I'm a bad PSer and forgot to share my Yvonne Raley paraiba Xmas ring! Sadly it came very big, and Yvonne realized that there wasn't a specified size on the order. So she kindly sent me a free return label and is fixing it now. Here are a few pics I took while waiting in line at the post office :) 20181227_113940.jpg 20181227_113946.jpg 20181227_113954.jpg

Waaah! How can you forget to post such a ring! Bad PSer indeed:lol:
What a beauty. This is such a beautiful design from Yvonne. And that Paraiba glow!! Can’t wait to see it on your finger once it is resized.

Wow, I love how the Paraiba just pops when surrounded by only diamonds. I think this is my favorite Camellia to date (and the Camellia is still my favorite of Yvonne's settings).

Thansk Acinom..it's more of a fun ring. The main stone is Gilalite in Quartz (also known as Medusa Quartz) and it comes from the same Brazilian mine as Paraibas. Because it's an inexpensive stone, I was going to set it in silver but was able to do it affordably in gold.

Time for another fun filled post concerning cuprians.
I have been compiling sayings and quotes I come across, that caught my attention.

Dana(mastercut gems)~
"I know being in this business/hobby for about 22 years I have seen a lot of gems. I have seen some doggy copper bearing gems and some outrageous glowing non-copper bearing gems. I for one never got overly involved in the "paraiba" tourmalines; one because they were just too costly to me for a gem that looked just like those from Namibia, Nigeria, and some from Afghanistan that did not have Cu present...".......
Dana(mastercut gems)~ "I buy for the color and not the content; as the color is what will make your eyes happy and the cu part will make your wallet unhappy :)"

This next one was notable to me, and it comes to us from ole Ruffy'sDad. The context is important here. Its in regard to the premium paid for gems on the basis of copper being present, regardless of how good, or poor, the color may may or may not be. Copper doesn't automatically give tourmaline special powers, like the ability to "'glow".

Ruffysdad~ "These are colored stones, not copper stones so when I'm offered them I usually grab my wallet with both hands and run the other way"

BRUCE FRY~ "It's the glow/vividness/visual impact of what I consider "high" quality cuprian tourmaline in the correct range of colors to be considered Paraiba/paraiba like, not their color, that is unique . And the glow/vividness/visual impact should be the defining property, not color, in judging the cost and quality of all cuprian tormaline.

TL~ "You should never ever buy a fine paraiba without seeing a top notch one in person or without an AGL color grading report IMHO. They all look glowy if you never saw the fine ones."

LD~ "I can't tell you how many people tell me they have a top colour with the neon glow when they have a stone that is very far removed from that. Unless you've seen a number it's very difficult to see what top colour is. My rule of thumb is that if it looks false then it's probably a good one!

LaShawn~ "Not only should there be a set minimums for the amount of both copper and manganese not only separately but combined in a preferred ratio.
However the biggest factor above all is Preferred “Species / Variety” Optimal Preferred Color Range
With Paraiba it is sometimes referred and referenced to INTENSE NEON “Windex Electric Blue”
Anything less SHOULD NOT be described or advertized as Paraiba.
Any hint of Gray/Grey should knock the stone out of contention at least in my view.
Remember, color, Color, COLOR!!!"
JB~ [regarding the misinformation about gold being found in paraiba, and how quickly it spread and entrenched itself as something that was true]
"If you want to see something funny, do a google search for "gold content in paraiba tourmaline. I think every dealer got a mimeographed copy of the claim. Identical word for word."

Mikko~ "
The picture below shows absorption spectra of Paraiba-type stone and blue "neon" colored tourmaline containing no copper. I have a problem in hearing this kind of stones called as "Paraiba-like", but the color is actually much better than in many copper containing stones. Only when having a really good Paraiba tourmaline side by side with this stone, it is possible to realize that something's missing. The reason for this "glow" of Paraiba- or Paraiba-type stones is not apparent when looking at absorption spectra at visible wavelengths. There is no luminescence reactions either... well, isn't it great that some things in gems remains mystery?Paraiba3.png

Thank you @Barrett . That’s a great read. Thank you for compiling these quotes

Hello.
Hope to get forum members' thoughts and advice again.
Subsequent to my last post, I bought the paraiba .
To recap , the paraiba is for my mother's upcoming birthday in early Feb.
I also agreed on a budget proposed by my mother's jeweler to fashion the paraiba into a pendant.
As this is my mother's long -time jeweler who has made customized pieces for her previously, I had left the design to him. [note: I live in a different city].
I just received pictures of the completed pendant and ..........
I am clueless about jewelry but the first thoughts upon seeing the pics were:
  • the pendant looks like a military medal;
  • the two pink stones (jeweler referred to them as "pads"?) don't match color-wise
I think my options are:
  1. Re-do the pendant - but not sure about design and also timing to get the pendant re-done;
  2. Give the pendant "as is" to my mother and let her sort it out with the jeweler
Appreciate forum members' thoughts and advice.

The good news is the diamond halo around your gorgeous paraiba looks fine. I agree the two pink stones don't match and need to go. It's just a question of sorting out a bale that adds to the beauty of your pendant rather than subtracts.

Do you think, that with the two pink stones gone, the star could then be used as a bale? If not, a very simple, matching bale might look something like this:
