Thought I'd share my emerald cab ring project

I've shown this emerald before in the thread https://www.pricescope.com/communit...merald-cab-the-same-way-as-a-jade-cab.266511/ and decided to scrap the unique "ocean jewel" with turtles look and go for a halo. The thing is, a lot of standard halos without interesting shapes bore me, and I ultimately decided to emulate the inspiration for @Bluegemz's star ruby ring.

Here's the emerald and the inspiration.

The CAD was made based on the size of rose cut diamonds available for the halo and shank. I wanted a pave shank, and my jeweler thought we should use all rose cuts if we want a coherent look that doesn't clash. It's going to sit as low as it can on the finger.

Then it comes to the choice of the metal.

I think I'm going to go with a 18k yellow gold head with a platinum shank. What do you guys think? I like all of them except the one with the platinum head and yg shank.

I personally like rose gold in the bezel with blue green stones, so yes to yellow gold with Emeralds.

Looking forward to see the finished ring!

DK :))

It looks good!

I would go for yellow head and white shank. Yellow claws enhance the green stone, and a white shank would enhance the yellow of the head. All yellow would make the head look less yellow, I think.

I have an emerald cut emerald bezel set in all 18K yellow gold. The stone against the yellow bezel looks great, but all yellow for the ring makes it look a bit pale.

Well I like them all so I’m no help whatsoever!!!! I have an Emerald set in all platinum and I love it because the richness of the Emerald takes over but equally yellow gold will be gorgeous. I love the design as well. Can’t wait to see it.

I'm a white gold, plat kinda gal.

But hey, it's your ring and it will look good in any colour!

Loving the halo with a twist!

The jeweler is recommending the last option because while I often prefer platinum, she thinks the emerald is a tad dark so she wants to lighten up the stone.

I think I want to have an emerald all in platinum as well, so I'm a little torn between having the ring all in platinum and having it with a yg head.

Thanks @dk168 @Burmesedaze for the input :)

Last option looks good to me but go with whatever you truly prefer since you are the one wearing it.

What are the little blue cabs in the photo, sapphire or tanzanite? So cute.

I would actually do yellow for the claws holding the emerald. White for the diamonds and yellow for the band. But I might be biased only because that’s what I did with mine!

Actually they were Afghanite = zinc spinel.

I ended up returning them because I wasn't doing ocean theme anymore. A further bummer is that I lost some paraibas, which I could have used in an ocean themed ring. Boo.

These examples are not much like your design, but they may be useful.

The top ring is brushed platinum. I think the softer texture and darker tone suit the soft velvety glow of the cab (half a trapiche with the axis set E-W; the horizontal black line is a segment divider). I guess a lot depends on your cab: is it ‘velvety’, ‘watery’ or ‘flashy’?

The bottom ring is an EC emerald in 18K yellow gold. (The stone looks a lot better in real life…) I like Ionysis’ idea of yellow for the claws that hold the emerald, white for rest of the head. On the right, I have photoshopped this look. It doesn’t work my cab and design, but it might for yours, which uses diamonds. It does show how the a white/grey head brings out yellow bezel/claws.

It is a beautiful cabochon & I love alternative halo ideas. I also love seeing your projects @voce because they are always so interesting. This will be a beautiful ring regardless of which option you choose. I suggest you use all platinum since you've wanted an emerald & platinum ring. However, emeralds always look lovely with yellow gold, too, so there is that.

Emeralds look good in all colors of gold :- ) I've been doing mostly RG recently, but WG or Platinum totally works for me, too ;-)

@voce , didn't you make a FYD and emerald YG ring a while back? I somehow thought that you weren't very fond of the end result...!? How does the cab look next to that YG to you?

Here are 2 pieces done by Bulgari in white metal.

@Neptune good point. I was not quite pleased with my YG ring with emerald and FYD because the FYD disappears into the gold in photos and during the day. I no longer have the cab with me; my jeweler has it, and I trust her!

I’m a white metal person and I think emerald (or any green stone) looks perfectly fine in platinum or WG. I’m the sort that probably goes oh yeah maybe it looks good in YG but no thanks I want WG anyway.

So as mentioned go with what makes you happy!

@minousbijoux and for everyone else

I've been waiting for when I have time and the right weather to showcase my newly finished ring. Still need to take more photos in various lighting, but here she is...855663

What a beautiful liquid-green stone! And the open setting brings it to life. The rose cut diamonds are perfect - they add some sparkle, but not too much

In the pic at the top of the thread, the stone looked a bit dark. But now it really glows.

Love the two tone action going on here! It turned out so beautiful.

Thanks @starstruck @Ionysis for your compliments...

The color shifts. It looks darker, more bluish indoors (not quite as dark as how it looks on camera) and a vibrant, almost "imperial" green outdoors. It's somewhat watery looking, and it's hard to photograph the Jardin.

Why thank you! It is truly unique (no, that's not code for something bad as its truly lovely) with the cab emerald and rose cuts. I love it and love your (seemingly) never ending source of inspiration.

As an aside, I saw this thread pop up with the September 1 date and was so afraid that I might have already seen and commented on your ring and yet completely forgotten that I had. So very relieved that my memory is not that bad yet!

It’s beautiful Voce. :kiss2: I think the shape of the halo plus the split shank makes it so unique. Can you show what it looks like from underneath? I know you said it sits right up against your finger.

It reminds me of fine imperial jade. What a beautiful ring.

Thanks @T L it was definitely more affordable than fine imperial green jadeite! But it satisfied that itch.

@elle_71125 there's the underside. It's simple and basic.PXL_20211006_153522329.jpg

WOW! I love emeralds and this ring is spectacular! I love the halo design.

It's beautiful and I love the halo. I've recently found the love for a fine cabochon. :kiss2:

Voce, you should seriously consider jewelry design as a profession or at least a money-making hobby :-)
