I am new to coloured gemstones and stumbled across this helpful forum. I am interested in the following ring and wanted to get people’s thoughts. It is also being sold at auction- by Lawsons- and I’d be interested to know if anyone has any tips for buying jewellery this (unconventional?) way.

Depends on the price. The quality of both the stone and setting looks lacking.

Thanks Chrono.

I have a suspicion I overpaid, although if the appraisal report can be taken at its word, I got a bargain!

I’ve attached the appraisal report and also two photos - one of the ring in natural light and one taken of the ring inside at night. Photos were just taken with my phone, so not the best!

I’m not sure auctions are the way to go unless you really know your stuff. Lesson learnt.

Auctions can offer a few bargains, but as you said you really have to know your stuff. Plus, some items may need to be repaired or sized which can eat up any “savings”. Appraisals are often inflated - and not just at auction houses. I think the color of the spinel looks pretty in the photos you just posted so I hope you enjoy your ring.

The retail value is grossly overstated. It looks better in your pictures.

It should be against the law to represent such outrageously high appraised values. It is not fair to the majority of buyers, who rely on the honesty of others. I mean, its one thing to set the appraised value at the top of the range, its another to inflate it like a blimp!

Enjoy your new ring!

I agree - surely this is tantamount to fraud?

It also makes the cost of insuring the piece astronomical!

OP - regardless of the appraisal value - your ring is very pretty. I like it.
