Thoughts on this purple sapphire?

I came across this ring and think it looks lovely, but know very little about purple sapphires! I could get it for USD 850 (am in the UK, as is the ring). I'm interested to know people's thoughts.

There is so much light being reflected from the sapphire it's difficult to determine the true colour. I'd ask for more photos in normal lighting.

Also, I'd want to see a copy of the AGL for the actual dimensions of the sapphire.

The cert says it's grayish-purple. Are you looking for a bright stone? Ask if they can get a few more photos, preferably a video outside. The photos are worse than ones I take. :lol-2: I like the setting, and if it's platinum with real diamonds, well that's great for the price! Also ask for a photo of the metal stamp if they can get it, to verify platinum since they don't have any proof of it. "No returns" doesn't mean anything if it's SNAD.

There's no mention of clarity, and the photos don't show much, so ask about that, too!

If it all pans out, you can always make an offer, making the deal even sweeter!

If I may add, be aware of the stone's drawbacks before you buy. The grayish colour means it's probably not a nicely saturated, vivid purple. The photos seem to be showing some shadowing and I'm not sure whether there's a window. You can safely assume that the pictures the seller uploaded are showing the stone in its best, meaning that in poorer light it probably won't look as good.

Do your due diligence so you're not disappointed when it arrives. Aside from that, I agree it looks very pretty.

It is a grey and dark stone, so if you like that, it seems a fair price, especially in platinum. Most of the value us probably in the diamond/platinum setting.

It may be the lighting, but the stone looks quite gray to me, so keep that in mind if you're after good saturation. I think you may do better by investing in a loose stone first and then setting it later. Good luck! :)

This is great advice! :geek2:

It depends on your colour preference. I think it’s unlikely this will be a vivid stone.

I think its a really pretty ring
But as others have said the photo will be showing it at its absolute best

It’s a lovely ring but is that colour sapphire your preference? It’s lacking in vividness and toning to the grey so it will need good light source to look nice.
Price wise is good as it’s platinum with 2 diamonds so it’s mainly whether or not the tone and hue is your preference.
If the seller accepts returns if you don’t like it, just be aware you will have to cover the PayPal fee is that’s your payment method. Also shipping both ways will be at your expense.
PayPal changed their rules and they keep their 4% fee from the payment no matter whether you return for refund or keep the item.

Thanks very much all. I think I'm going to leave it. I was being swayed by the good price for a nice-looking diamond and platinum setting and an unheated sapphire, but it's not truly the colour I want.

A deal is only a deal if you're getting exactly what you want, as a PSer's tagline used to say!

Thanks you for your thoughtful input :)

This is so true! I recently purchased a sapphire, and was given a truly exceptional price by the dealer (a friend). The color and clarity ended up being great, but the cut left something to be desired. He was shocked that I returned it. But I'd rather get the money back, throw some extra cash in the pot, and wait out the right stone. On the occasions I have NOT done that, I inevitably ended up selling the stone down the line. So, smart choice! Good luck in your hunt!!
