Hello all. Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but I thought you lovely ladies could help me out. I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning at a new salon. I am going in for highlights and a cut. The owner of the salon is doing the highlights and another employee is doing the cut. I have always just had the same person do both and normally tip 20%. So my question is, do you still tip both 20%? I think I read somewhere that you''re not supposed to tip the owner, but I would feel odd about not tipping someone? Can anyone shed light on what is appropriate? Thanks

My stylist owns her own salon, and I tip her 20% for a cut and colour every time.

i have always felt odd not tipping the owner when they have done my hair and i have only had one actually tell me owner''s don''t take gratuities, and then refuse my tip when i still tried to insist. she said my repeat business and referrals are the best tips i could give her, and she had a point. i know the theory behind it is that stylists usually give up anywhere from 30-60% of the cost of the service to the owner, whereas the owner sets her price and keeps 100% (minus the costs of overhead, which should be built in anyway). still, i just don''t feel right walking out without giving something.

You''re not suppose to tip the owner, but I still do and I tip both the stylist and the colorist. The deal though is I''ve started tipping less for the first time with any salon worker because I''ve had terrible experiences with hair dressers and I hate getting out to my car and realizing the person has done a terrible job. I tipped the last stylist I went to $15 on a $65 cut and then got home and tried to style my hair as I normally do and I realized she cut my hair poorly and I even recut it MYSELF and it looked better.

I have the owner of the salon do my hair and I tip him 18%; I do not tip on products like shampoos and conditioners. Do people tip personal trainers and how much???? That one I always wonder about.

See that is what I thought....I guess I will give her the 20%. I would feel odd about not giving a tip.
