I am wondering why yellow diamonds with good clarity grades often look like they have black spots in them when they are photographed.

I have taken some pics of my yellow diamond and when I see the pic I see black spots. When I look at and loupe my diamond I don''t see them. I have also noticed this on web pictures as well. What gives??

I could not tell exactly what you are talking about... but chances are the "black spots" are your (or the loupe''s) reflection into the diamond. Some facets just act like small mirrors (explained by Garry here). :)

In a round H&A, those "mirrors" are neatly arranged to look like arrows. Assuming the yellows you have in mind are radiants, the mirror facets would be tiny shards scattered all over the stone.

At least some of these black spots should also appear black under the Ideal-Scope (or in the #6 frame of the Brilliance Scope). You might want to look at the "spot pattern" of the radiant down this link. Each stone is different through.

Hope this helps a bit
