Hello everybody,

My first post ever here so please forgive me if this is the incorrect thread. However, I just had this ring delivered. It’s a lovely little Victorian 5 stone old cut diamond ring. It’s not my size so I possibly could resize it but my main idea for this ring was to reset the stones into a dbty style necklace. However, now it’s in my hands and the stones aren’t the brightest in the world, I’m wondering if I should sell the ring on or go ahead with my plans? (I’ve never had anything reset before!) Any ideas?

How much did you pay? Can you return? Have you sold anything before?

It was an eBay purchase so no return. It was £280 so around $350. And no, never sold anything before. It’s 18k and 0.50 ctw. No idea if it’s a good deal or not.

If your initial response is underwhelming, I would say return if you can. But, have you made sure the stones are clean? Maybe give it a nice long soak in some very hot water and a pinch of dish soap just to be sure.

It looks like a nice ring and 350 is a decent deal. Were you interested in making using old cut diamonds in your necklace? Bc nice old cuts are hard to find.

Yes! I wanted a diamonds by the yard 5 stone necklace but I have a soft spot for old cuts. I thought it would be a little unique instead of the typical brilliants. Not sure if white gold or yellow would look best with their colour though.

That ring is FILTHY. Soak it in six parts boiling water and one part household ammonia. Wear gloves when you do. If you can manage that, boiling water with dish soap and some household cleaner like Mr Clean. Scrup it with a baby tooth brush either way.

The close up picture look like nice little old cuts. Cleaning should make a huge difference.

I actually like the size of those diamonds in a 5 stone ring, it looks really pretty on the hand. Price is good. Let us know if they look better after cleaning.

Yes I think it’s a lovely ring for stacking and for a very good price! I’d keep it and look for diamonds in ugly settings so tearing it apart is a gift to humanity lol

Okay, I gave it a good clean yesterday. I think the setting quality is not the best as it’s a little roughly done but I think they do have a bit more life in them!! However, I definitely see a pale yellow colour in one.

Here’s some pictures in this morning sun.

It looks lovely on your hand. Recreating a ring like that from scratch would cost so much more than you paid. It’s very pretty. Maybe you can have the prongs retipped?
