Hello ladies. Hate to be a downer today, but I can''t help it. I was informed last week that the funding for my position ran out a few months ago and that they had tried everything to keep me on and keep my research/work going but that the latest project I am working on is a dead end. The worst part? I totally agree with them and have been trying to explain that to the superiors for weeks - even if it meant losing my job. I felt pointless at work.

I am fairly confident that this won''t happen, but I am afraid that it will affect our engagement plans. He is being super supportive and fantastic, I am just afraid that even though his plan is going directly according to his proposed time line - mine isn''t on track now.

Call me crazy, control freak, a "planner" whatever. When I am "off track" I lose my mind. The biggest problem is I don''t know if I want to go to grad school or if I want to get a career. eeps. shuddering just thinking either. Sorry, had to voice my concerns.

I guess every situation has its silver lining, mine would be time to renovate and promote my business. Started it last year, (In the BLACK!!! YES!) time to refresh product lines before "season." Do you think it would be unwise to accept this unemployment a blessing and not look for a serious career or educational commitment to focus on growing my business?

Work on your business for a little while, and see how things go. If you started a year ago, and are already operating in the black, that''s wonderful! Imagine what you could do while working on it full time.

I understand how you feel, I have been unemployed since Feb, but I went back to school. I feel a little useless at times, but I know in my heart that we will both be better off for me having done this rather than right back to work at another crappy job. I''ve honestly never been happier than I am now, I can be there for my family (we have a couple of major health crisis-es with both of my grandmothers, as well as the bf''s mom) and I can make sure that we WILL have a better life than before.

I am so sorry about this bad news, HaloLove.

If you don''t mind me asking, what type of business do you own?

I don''t think it would be a bad idea to take a couple of weeks (or even months) to decide what course you want to follow, if you can manage that financially. When talking about graduate school, you could wait and enroll for the spring 2011 semester, if that''s what you decide. If you decide to pursue a career, you can do that when you''re ready.

Personally, if you think your business could be successful and it''s something that you love, I say go for it. I think it would be a great opportunity and a great learning experience.

Sending you well wishes.

Halo, it sounds like you''re taking this as well as can be.

I agree with the others - if you have the financial ability to take some time and focus on your business, do that. If you find it doesn''t work out as planned, or you would prefer to do something else, those opportunities will still be there in the future.

Good luck!

Manderz, You hit the nail on the head with "Imagine what you could do working on it full time" Those have been my thoughts exactly. I started it the first time grad school didn't work out, haha strange how things work out in the long run. I was having a mini-meltdown and the BF have asleep told me to do what I love and I said i can't make money doing what i love. Queue up nightmare and waking up in a cold sweat 3 hours later with my whole business plan, products name and plans for expansion. it was strange. Started while working two jobs and 3 months out of school, we hit the black after 1 month of operation.

Snowmiser, Thank you so much for the reply and your well wishes. You most certainly can ask what kind of business I own, I am very proud of it. :) I am co-owner/founder of a jewelry and accessory business focused around sports spectators. Mostly focused on SEC College teams, our products are all handmade and super flexible so we can customize it to almost any team or organization. We are planning to expand to the sorority market in the coming weeks with my now open availability. :) The night I lost my job, I freaked out and got a new website and completely renovated the design. Our viewership is up 650% from last week. It is starting to seem like my quarter life crisis's are good for my business! LOL.

In response to both of you and sillyberry, I am glad you also think that this could be an opportunity. I tend to get sucked into an idea whether or not it is a good idea, hence the asking about how wise it would be. I'm young and inexperienced in the business world so I really rely on the advice of others. I guess my main concern is really a fear. A fear that if this doesn't work out we will want to put off engagement until we can financially support it and wedding planning. Fear is all part of the game though right? Without it, nothing would get accomplished.

Thank you for your responses ladies, you are helping to calm me down.

I am an extremely firm believer that everything happens for a reason.

I say, take it as a blessing :)

This will hopefully open up some new doors for you!

Good Luck with your business!

Good prices too!

HaloLove I am so sorry you are feeling down but THINGS WILL GET BETTER!! I think its a great idea to focus on your business right now and try not to panic. I understand your off-trackness (you know what I mean!) cause I am the exact same - a complete planner!! I love to plan for everything and then freak out when things don''t go my way but life happens and things will always work out for the best!

Keep your chin up missy!!

I''m sorry that you lost your job. If you qualify for unemployment, though, keep in mind when decision-making that unless Congress passes extensions, the recently laid off only get the basic 26 weeks. No Tiers, no 99 weeks, no EBm no HUP, no whatever. You may or may not qualify for WIA training money toward your advanced degree. It depends on whether those with college degrees are barred, whether there is actually money in the pot at this time of the year or when school starts, and whether your advanced degree is considered a "demand occupation."

I do not qualify for standard unemployment, but I'll look into the others. Specifically that one you mentioned related to starting a business.

In a few days, It will have been a week. Things are looking good for the business, we have a plan for the next few months and I have dramatically reduced my monthly expenses - most of which were extraneous.

Still on the job hunt, but not too seriously for at least another week. I have a LOT to do until then though! I just wanted to say think you all for your kind words and your advice. It is so nice to hear that you all agree that this is an opportunity for my business and I should look at it as such - A blessing rather than a curse.

P.S. How awesome is new PS!!??
