wow, I am really surprised! This is the kind of thread that has me going : ''Is this an " ''only in America'' phenomenon, or what?!?" Is this common in other parts of the world?
Dated the DH from 18 to 23 with the intention of marrying, but broke up for a decade, married other people, both got divorced from those "starter spouses", got back together for a year, broke up for 8 years, and finally got back together for real. He calls it a 30 year marriage with some LONG separations.
I call him my "bungee boyfriend". We''ve decided that we get a .5 year "credit" for each year spent together, so our first anniversary will be #4? We went straight to old married....before we were married.
Drives a friend of ours batty. He says that HE wants to do that - meet someone and BOOM! go straight to what we have. Of course WE didn''t go straight to what we have. We did a lot of "work" in those separations, a lot of growing up. Acquaintances dismiss us many times, and call us newlyweds, and we always pretty much fall down laughing.
So...don''t know if that counts, but we get a lot of fun mileage out of it. Being with someone I''ve known since I was 16 is the greatest boon of my life. Other than being one of the very few people on the planet who knew him BEFORE the mustache.
