Ack, it drives me absolutely insane to think he''ll most probably continue to refer to me as his girlfriend once we''re engaged. And "ma blonde" sounds SOOOO juvenile (not to mention I''m NOT a blonde but a brunette)! Ick! I don''t understand why people here don''t refer to their fiancés as such. You can believe me that "mon chum" (ick, I usually use "copain" anyway) will be BANNED from my vocabulary once we''re engaged. He''ll be my fiancé, and I''ll refer to him as my fiancé, I don''t really care if other people think it''s awkward. I''ll probably correct him if he refers to me as his girlfriend too, ''cause it''s already been driving me bonkers. As ally said, a lot of people here are girlfriend and boyfriend and never intend to marry, and that''s just not us, so it bugs me. Appletini: You noticed that! It''s complicated because my boyfriend is french-Canadian and I speak french about 98% of a day. And even though we are engaged he always presents me at work, to family etc., functions as ''Ma copine'' I present him as ''Mon copain''. Which in english is either boyfriend/girlfriend OR companion. Since a lot of french Canadians DON''T get married, fiancé is a bit awkward because I''ve NEVER heard any french-Canadian introduce their girlfriend/ boyfriend (even engaged) as their fiancé. So my boyfriend and I agreed that we would never call each other fiancé.
95% of french candians refer to boyfriend/girlfriend''(no intention of marriage) by saying ''Ma blonde'' (Yup ''my blonde'') and boyfriend as ''mon chum''
He will present me as copine, and so I naturally translate as close as I can. In english I could say companion, but in Quebec a lot of english people say ''companion'' to mean their life partner, which they don''t intend on ever marrying so it''s not entirely appropriate for our case. So it''s a weird language thing for me.
Another strange french-canadian fact....you know there is perfect tanslation for ''I like you?'' Ãou can only ''love=je t''aime'' or be intrested in someone. That''s something that drives me bonkers.
Yeah, the French language is weird that way. And we Quebecers are even weirder. St-Jean-Baptiste Day tomorrow is our "national holiday"... Lots of partying and even more drinking. Not really my kind of thing, I must admit!

I was inspired to respond because I have a few parallels in my life. My bf and I first started dating when we were 19. He was pre-med. We had a few growing pains, but it wasn''t until he started med school when we were 23 that things really fell apart. And I mean deteriorated. Quickly. As far as I was concerned, he turned selfish, inwardly-focused, utterly unconcerned about my life and my plans. As he saw it, I was completely unsupportive. By November of his first year we were done. Ripped up the plane tickets for the trip we were supposed to take together and moved on without each other.
That was nearly five years ago. Now we''re moving in together. During that time apart I dated a ton, flirted shamelessly, went out until all hours with my girlfriends. I grew as an individual. I went to grad school and my career blossomed. He did his thing. And when we reconnected, his fourth year of med school, we realized that we had grown in the same direction. We were the same people - but we both had our "me" time behind us and were ready for each other. Fast forward: He just finished up his first year of residency - what most would say is the hardest year of his life. It''s been smooth sailing for us - such a dramatic contrast to his first year of med school. I make him dinner and let him fall asleep on me and clean his apartment. And I don''t mind. And he goes out of his way to call me from the hospital, to have my favorite snacks in his apartment - the little things that let me know that even though he''s working 120 hours a week, he''s thinking about me. I know I''m rambling. But your story just triggered memories of that incredibly painful time in my life. But I really believe it was all for the best. I hope you figure out the right path for you, and I hope I helped a little!
