As #1 on the LIW list I''m obviously not yet engaged but Nate has the stone and has promised the proposal by July so I''ve been more actively planning our future wedding. Right now we have October 11, 2008 reserved for us at an amazing venue, a mansion in the hills of upstate NY overlooking one of the Finger lakes. I''m envisioning a sunset ceremony on the brick patio overlooking the yard and lake and an evening reception in the golden two story ball room.

So, I had planned a quick trip home for Mother''s Day and talked my future maid of honor in to going dress shopping with me since I''m starting to get antsy about the dress. Technically I have about 17 months until the big day, but I wanted to get out to the stores and start trying things on to determine what shapes/styles of dress look best on me.

Which leads me to my poll....

Of the huge group of dresses I tried on, 2 really stood out. I''ve shown these photos to my mom, younger sister, best friend at work, and yes, even Nate (none of the dresses really seemed like "the one" so I thought I''d take the opportunity to get an idea of which he liked best, although I''m really starting to like one more and more every time I look at the photos). No one can seem to agree. They are, in my opinion, very different dresses and I''d love opinions on which sort of style I should persue in the future.

Since you girls are always so great about sharing your constructive opinions, and all of my real life critics can''t agree, which of these two dresses do you like the best on me?

I went back and forth a few times - but I think I prefer #1. It emphasizes your waist better than #2.

#1 does a nicer job slimming the waist. #2 does a better job and hiding any tummy. However I don''t like the gathers on #2...the first layer looks weird, as it seems to cut off the dress mid thigh.

My vote goes to #1.

I prefer the first one, maybe with a slightly bigger crinoline.

If I''m being honest, I dont like either one on your body...the first one is more slimming but I dont look at you in it and think "wow!" I think you should keep looking and keep this on your maybe list...

For 2008 & on you -- both, I prefer #1. Assuming it was fitted more in the torso. It''s flattering & classic & has a kind of optical illusion thing that send people''s eye back up to your face & bust. Who doesn''t like that!

#2 is a pretty dress ... but I think it''s pretty likely that its style will be dated by Oct 2008 -- it''s so many "seasons" away ... so many new things coming. Also - it looks quite busy - chaotic even. Like a meraingue dessert or something!

I''d bet you could find a gorgeous dress that has the flattering shaping up top & the kind of gathers on the bodice of the 2nd dress. So many dresses combine the best parts of both of those dresses -- just need more looking if neither shouts "the one".

Also -- a recent thread suggested 9 months out as a good time to dress shop & order. Styles come & go so much that even classic dresses might have a little something different then that would make you feel very special & very "now". (Remember the colored sash, or the tuxedo bow, or short sleeved lace jackets etc) Subtle details -- not screaming TRENDY like mutton sleeves or something ... that you might prefer CLOSER TO the date.

deco, you should link her to your photos of you in your dress, which was lovely and which I may steal...I used to think that wasn''t "bridey" enough but you made it bridey enough (in a good way

I've got to be honest, I don't *love* any of them on you. But if I had to choose, I would go with #1.

I also think the style of #2 might look more dated by 2008.

But you're gorgeous and have a nice waist, so I think you can find one that will be smashing on you given a bit more time.

You are wearing number one. Number two is wearing you.

Definitely number one.

ETA: I'm with the other's though... not in LOVE with any of them though. Have you tried on any dropped waist alines with plain skirts?

I like #1 better. #2 seems very trendy right now.

I prefer #1 by far, and I especially like the bodice detailing. It''s very flattering. I don''t really like pick-up skirts, like #2.

I just realized...If you''re not getting married until 2008, it seems a bit early to be making a dress decision. That''s a long wait and both those dresses could look very dated by then...

I agree with surfgirl and others who said it is kind of early to pick out a dress. That is how I ended up with two wedding dresses for my October wedding, and believe me, I wished I would have put the money for the first dress ($950

But I am at times I extremely indecisive and have a hard time figuring out what I want. Who am I to judge? If you are definitely deciding on a dress now, I would go with #1. It's classic and regal, and the most flattering.

I rather agree with surf girl. I think you can do way better than either of them. (Though I do like the look of the train on #1 and it is the more flattering of the 2 overall). But you have tons of time to try dresses (lucky you! I love trying things on). I think the key is to try many different styles of dresses. I think that a halter style with a nice, full skirt would be flattering. Have you ever considered trying a dress of that type?

I also sort of agree with Deco that #2 is probably going to be dated looking in late 2008....

I too prefer #1 on you. The sleeker lines suit you.

Also, I don''t mean to thread-jack, but my fiance and I are just starting to look at reception venues in upstate NY and yours sounds GORGEOUS from what you said about it. Would you mind sharing the name with me? I''d appreciate it very much!

Heidi, not to beat a dead horse but I just re read this thread and I wanted to say that when I look at both those photos, your body language, posture and facial expression doesn''t say you love either dress. You have a TON of time to look. If I was you, I''d try on every style I could, see which styles look best on you, so you can narrow it down to a cut/style. Then 8 months out or so, look again for the real purchase.

My problem with both of these gowns is that they hit you in that weird place: the 'natural waist'. From what I've seen, this style doesn't flatter most women. It definitely didn't flatter me!

I would recommend trying on some other gowns, specifically those with empire and drop waists. Since you've got some time, try on dresses 'til you drop!

I personally don''t think either is "wow" on you.

When I started looking for dresses I tried on every single dress that I thought I loved. And indeed I still love the dresses but they all either looked terrible on me or didn''t flatter my shape. I''ve got a long torso, booty and a tiny top, and I also don''t weigh 110 lbs so slinky dresses and mermaid styles just made me look like a weeble. I had my heart set on on dress in particular and I was so dissapointed at how it just didn''t work on me. Let''s not even talk about the horror show of a drop waist with a long torso...

Then expanded my price range from 500 to 1000 I started trying on dresses that I NEVER thought I would like. I didn''t want strapless, I didn''t want A-line, I didn''t want lots of things... But every single one that i thought i didn''t want flattered my shape and made me feel like a billion bucks. Could have knocked me over with a feather. I knew "the" dress was "it" when every person who saw me went "wow" and when I started comparing all other dresses to how that one fit.

Keep shopping! Try on things you wouldn''t normally gravitate to.

Besides you''ll not have many future opportunties to be pampered.

I can''t choose because I think you can do bettere. You have a lovely figure and neither dress flatters it.

I agree with Kimberly completely!! And someone mentioned possibly a halter top.....I think that'd be great to test that theory!! I don't know your dress budget but have you tried any Maggie Sottero gowns on yet? They have lovely asymetrical waist styles that I personally think are gorgeous :)

ETA: I notice #2 has a little asymetry going on in the waist area so if you like that def check out MS ....and maybe w/o the pick ups as those particular ones look a litte too structured. Mori Lee has some pretty, more relaxed, pick up skirts that would be nice to see on you if you are keen on that style :)

I think the first one makes you look taller and sleeker. I would like the second one better if it had fewer pickups in the skirt, but this is a preference thing.

i''m not loving either dress on you. #1 is nicer, but does nothing for you. #2 is too gathery and poufy for me--it looks like 2 dresses were cut and made into 1 dress. keep shopping--you will know the dress when you put it on. if your friends and family aren''t telling you which one they really like, then keep shopping...you have plenty of time. try on every style--its usually the one you don''t think will look nice that will.

I likes parts of each, lol....

I think I like the top half of #2 better on you.. The corseting goes a little lower down the body so it makes a nice sillouette. I don''t like where #1''s waist stops; I think it makes you look like you have more of a tummy than you do. I DO like the narrower A-line on that 1st dress, though.

YOu should try one that has similar wrap style in the front as #2 , like a Maggie Sottero style. THey are incredibly flattering and gorgeous dresses... I will dig out a pic..

Of the two, I prefer the first but I agree w/the others. Since you have so much time, I''d say keep looking around. I tried on quite a few dresses before 1) I figured out what worked for me and 2) I found a dress that worked for me, that I really like and I could afford.

Good luck w/your shopping!

I agree. I wish the skirt was a little fuller though but #2 has WAYYYYY too much going on IMHO.
