I've been looking for a tsav for a long time. There are 2 I'm considering. First is nicely cut with color in my sweet spot, 1.85 carats. The 2nd is 2.14 carats, nice color, cut not as nice as 1st stone. Still waiting for more pics of 2nd stone. I'll have both shipped to me to compare but my greediness is leaning toward the larger stone because I like 'em bigger. Comments?

I think you're smart to look at both in person! I like the more blue-leaning green of the first stone, but I'm interested to hear what you think when you see them.

Ooh, that's tough. The floral cutting and color on the smaller is very much my preference.
But also, bigger, ya know?
The only way to know is to see both. Does the larger have a video?

I didn't ask him for a video because he's already done quite a few for me and I don't want to be a PIA. I'm waiting for a pic on his hand though and should be able to tell from that if I want to see it in person.

Arrrgh, I like that one best too. I just wish it were bigger, dang it. It's like searching for a unicorn when blindfolded in a lightless deep cave.
It really is stupid pretty. The color is just there.
Ah, so, it's an adventure then! And I'm here to, in the end, be mildly helpful.

Tally hooooo!

lol So true! I think greens are just the toughest in general. Don't settle!!

Excited to see what you think of them! Good luck photographing them though, green stones are absolutely impossible to photo :)

Like the others, I prefer the first one. Bluer green (if the pictures are to be believed) and better cut. The dark ends and light middle of the oval would really annoy me. I can't wait to hear what you think when you see them in person.

What are their measurements?

1.85 c -- 8.2×6.5mm, depth 4.5mm

2.14 c -- 8.6 x 6.2 mm

No surprise there, I prefer the first. I suspect a good amount of the extra carat weight of the second stone is in the depth, not in face-up dimensions.

Area for oval formula: A = pi*a/2*b/2
Math nerd computation of face-up area:
1st stone A = pi*4.1*3.25*0.25 = 41.86*0.25 = 10.465 sq mm
2nd stone A = pi*4.3*3.1*0.25 = 41.88*0.25 = 10.470 sq mm

Gaining a measly 0.005 sq mm of face-up area is NOT worth the color trade-off!

Just keep whichever color you prefer, in the end.

2.14 c -- 8.6 x 6.2 mm

Not much diff in face up size so as others have suggested just go for the one with better color/cutting irl.

Based on colour alone, the first one with more blue appeals to me more.

I also believe the cut is better in the first stone, however, difficult to judge based on just one photo!

If the cutter is Jeff W or Gary B, then I would not be concerned about the cutting as I trust their cutting to be excellent based on my long time collaborations with them.

DK :))

From pictures alone, the first one appeals more to me. Hopefully your decision will be an easy one once you have both in hand for an accurate comparison.

I purchased the 1.85. It should here tomorrow morning. I'll post pics. I've already amassed photos of potential setting ideas, lol. I received the video of the other one this morning and it is uninspiring. The cut doesn't do justice to the stone so I'm not going to get it to compare with the one from GemFix.

How exciting! Like pretty much everyone else, I too preferred the 1.85. It has a gorgeous color and the cut looks good. I can’t wait to see your hand pics!

Ps. What kind of setting are you thinking? I’d love to see some inspo pics.

I want a contemporary sleek and chunky setting. I'm still mulling over what shape side stones I want. Inspo pics.

I'm going to go against the grain here, LOL, imagine that!

I think you will find (that is if the pictures are fairly accurate???) the second stone will be the best, it looks more vivid where the first one looks a hair grayish, again if the pictures are fairly accurate and only you will find out.

I love the first stone! I can’t wait to see it!

Ya'll are going to have to trust me on this. The stone looks like the vendor pic. I took at least 100 shots and these are the best from low light, natural light, window light and no light. I lost it once in a drawer, dropped it a dozen times, and put my grubby fingprints all over it. I'll never ever try to photograph a green stone again.

It is very hard many times to get a stone's color right on a white background, especially if you do not take gemstone pictures for a living.

Try if you have not, on your finger or a brown or gray background. :)

A ring design inspiration that I have for a green triangular Tsavorite.

I like it as it is contemporary, sleek and chunky, and would probably set the Tsavorite in Rose Gold and not YG.

My Tsavorite from Jeff W is a round and 7mm in diameter, so it should work too.

Brown & gray backgrounds. The problem is that I can't get the gorgeous flashes of pure green because of the way the light reflects off the facets and because I can't get out of the way enough and cast a shadow on the stone. Ideal Scope pic just for fun but I didn't do it correctly. I need a nap.

Don't feel too bad. All of my green stones photograph like sh*t! It's so frustrating, but what can you do?

Your tsav looks gorgeous. The color looks very saturated. What do you think of it?

Well, you did a good job anyway!

But, that is why us professionals have lightboxes and take pictures in natural sunlight. Those are the best light to get the closest color pictures of a stone.

I don't expect you to have a lightbox, good ones start around $800.00 and can go up to $3000.00. Just another expense a gemstone dealer must have to sale stones.

I know that if a tsavorite or emerald looks this good in photos, it must be 100x better in person. I love it... big congrats!!

If I recall what we learned in biology back in school correctly, our sight has evolved to recognise green as a colour a lot better than other colours that were less critical to our survival. The same can't be said about cameras.
