Are UltraSonic machines (especially the one from Sharper Image) safe for sapphires? Their website warns it''s "Not appropriate for soft, fragile stones such as pearls, opals, amber and emeralds" and I know Sapphires get a higher rating on Moh''s hardness scale, but just want to be safe!

Also, any reason the Sharper Image''s new model is any better than last years which is much cheaper?

thanks!

I have the older model and I put my sapphire and diamond ring and sapphire and diamond earrings in there about once per month, since I don''t wear them everyday, and it has been fine thus far. AS FAR AS I KNOW, all other gemstones should be okay in it except for those they specifically list.

The ones that are definitely safe are red white and blue--rubies, diamonds and sapphires. I have occasionally put an emerald in there (on normal, not high), but I don''t think I''d do it on a regular basis.

As far as I know, the difference between the two models is a second tank for cleaning sterling silver. I have the old model, though (love it, by the way), so someone might correct me.
