Recently, I have been getting more and more interested into opals. And ever since I started going to the jewelry shows in NY, I find that I really love antique opal and yellow gold jewelry pieces. A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a dealer in the UK who was having a sale and I found this gorgeous 3-stone Opal cabochon and OMC ring. I knew I just had to have it, so straight into my cart it went lol. Of course I continued to browse the other pieces and they had a sweet little 3-stone Ruby & rose cut diamond ring in 14k rose gold. It is like a size 4.5, but I just had to have it so I purchased that as well as a pinky ring.
It was quickly shipped from the UK and made it to my door in a week or so. But ugh, the USPS has been so awful with packages lately. I watched the tracking history on USPS - seeing it bounced around to multiple distribution centers for 3 days; first the one closest to me, then another one further away, then back to the original one! And then on Saturday when it was set to be delivered, I waited all day and the mailman comes at 4:15pm and does NOT ring the doorbell. He just ... knocks on the door and leaves a notice that nobody was home . I was definitely there but in the kitchen prepping dinner so didn't hear anything from the door or my phone at all. So at 4:30, I checked my phone and realized he had left, so I ran out to see if I could track him down. Luckily, I found him after 10 minutes or so of circling the nearby streets and acquired my package back lol He said he was on his way back to the post office too, and I would have had to wait another 2 days to pick it up on Monday
So once the adrenaline of the afternoon wore off, I finished my dinner prep and then ripped open the box to check the rings. Thankfully it was a happy ending after all The opal ring went straight on my ring finger and the ruby ring on my pinky for a photo shoot in the backyard. Now without further ado, here are my new Victorian rings!
The center opal cab is 6.3 x 5mm and the two opals on the sides measure 4.4 x 3mm, and 4 OMCs. I love the buttery 18k yellow gold and it is in pretty good condition.
The 3 rubies are cushion cut and the diamonds are rose cuts. The scalloped edges just give it that little extra detail that I really love. And it fits perfectly on my pinky fingers! I can't really tell if it is 14k rose gold or yellow gold that developed a rosy patina, but it works for me either way.
Here they are together
Can see the Birmingham Assay mark, but the actual year hallmark is rubbed off. I think it kind of looks like a lower case H or L, so perhaps it is from 1882 or 1885?
Here is the Chester Assay marks dating to 1894!
Bonus - opal and ruby are the birth stones of my two kids. So now every time I wear these, I think of them. My daughter is already angling to wear the opal ring, but she is going to have to wait a while lol
