Recently, I have been getting more and more interested into opals. And ever since I started going to the jewelry shows in NY, I find that I really love antique opal and yellow gold jewelry pieces. A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a dealer in the UK who was having a sale and I found this gorgeous 3-stone Opal cabochon and OMC ring. I knew I just had to have it, so straight into my cart it went lol. Of course I continued to browse the other pieces and they had a sweet little 3-stone Ruby & rose cut diamond ring in 14k rose gold. It is like a size 4.5, but I just had to have it so I purchased that as well as a pinky ring.

It was quickly shipped from the UK and made it to my door in a week or so. But ugh, the USPS has been so awful with packages lately. I watched the tracking history on USPS - seeing it bounced around to multiple distribution centers for 3 days; first the one closest to me, then another one further away, then back to the original one! And then on Saturday when it was set to be delivered, I waited all day and the mailman comes at 4:15pm and does NOT ring the doorbell. He just ... knocks on the door and leaves a notice that nobody was home :angryfire:. I was definitely there but in the kitchen prepping dinner so didn't hear anything from the door or my phone at all. So at 4:30, I checked my phone and realized he had left, so I ran out to see if I could track him down. Luckily, I found him after 10 minutes or so of circling the nearby streets and acquired my package back lol He said he was on his way back to the post office too, and I would have had to wait another 2 days to pick it up on Monday :knockout:

So once the adrenaline of the afternoon wore off, I finished my dinner prep and then ripped open the box to check the rings. Thankfully it was a happy ending after all  The opal ring went straight on my ring finger and the ruby ring on my pinky for a photo shoot in the backyard. Now without further ado, here are my new Victorian rings!

The center opal cab is 6.3 x 5mm and the two opals on the sides measure 4.4 x 3mm, and 4 OMCs. I love the buttery 18k yellow gold and it is in pretty good condition.

The 3 rubies are cushion cut and the diamonds are rose cuts. The scalloped edges just give it that little extra detail that I really love. And it fits perfectly on my pinky fingers! I can't really tell if it is 14k rose gold or yellow gold that developed a rosy patina, but it works for me either way.

Can see the Birmingham Assay mark, but the actual year hallmark is rubbed off. I think it kind of looks like a lower case H or L, so perhaps it is from 1882 or 1885?

Here is the Chester Assay marks dating to 1894!

Bonus - opal and ruby are the birth stones of my two kids. So now every time I wear these, I think of them. My daughter is already angling to wear the opal ring, but she is going to have to wait a while lol

Love these! I also would like to collect some rings in these styles in the coming years.

I often wonder how the opals survive 140 years without damage? My understanding is that opal is soft and prone to damage?

They are both gorgeous!
I'm glad you rescued them❤️

Oh these are so perfect on you and your photos are amazing! I love that they're both an elevated version of the typical rings we see in this style. Congratulations!

What beautiful rings! Thank you for sharing the great photos and observations. I love the buttery gold and bright colorful gems!

That is a score, and the opals are so lively. Many times they just aren't. The rings are just especially pretty all together.
I'm terrified of destroying them, but I love them so. They remind me of the magic of my mom.
Enjoy them!

Definitely a softer stone and I will need to be careful when I wear it. I have been taking it off every time I wash my hands too, to be safe. Given the lack of wear, my guess is that the previous owner whoever babied it or it spent most of the time in a jewelry box.

I definitely find something so mysterious and beautiful about opals. I was not super impressed by the photos on the website but there were a couple of videos on the seller's IG that made me think it was worth a chance for the price. Have definitely seen opals in person that just fell flat but these have pretty good color play for the size.

@stracci2000, @newtojewels, @LightBright thank you for the kind words. I am definitely enjoying filling out my collection with these pieces lately, just wish I started sooner!

Ah, i love these! The opals are so mystical & the rubies are so juicy! :kiss2: I love the idea of rescuing antique pieces & breathing life back into them. I have now ticked everything off my Lust List as of this Friday when I finally get to wear my Big Birthday Watch, so then i am going to turn myself to antiques.

Love opals.
Your Victorian ring is a beauty, obviously treasured by its previous owners to be in such good condition.
Ordinary water is fine for Opals but best to avoid salty water, pools and spas.
It’s mainly accidental whacks you want to avoid.

Both rings are gorgeous but I especially love the opal one! Now you need an opal bracelet to go with it or you could just give the ring to me since I already have a matching bracelet.

Lol I have my eye on a few other non-ring opal pieces too to grow my collection. Sorry to disappoint, but I'll gladly trade for some of your gorgeous pieces Catmom!

I haven't previously worked with the vendors selling the other opal pieces though so trying to figure out if their photos are accurate and also if I want to spend xxxx more money so soon after buying these other pieces. I also have a new custom piece in the works as well, though it will be a gift for my mom. Too many things I like and not enough $$$!
