Hi!

I am deeply entrenched in the buying process for an e-ring, and wanted y'alls opinion on the role a yellow-gold setting can play in color selection for a round diamond. I am currently attached to H/G's, but curious as to whether an I/J might be discreet enough in a yellow-gold setting.

Other Factors:
  • I'm considering a small/tight halo, but would be concerned that the matching small-stones might contribute to an overall warm ring (which I'm trying to avoid).
  • Thoughts on yellow-gold or platinum prongs with regard to warmth? I

To me an I looks plenty white, even in white gold. So I think it would look fine in a YG setting, but I would prefer to get a WG or plat basket & prongs with a YG shank as opposed to having the ring entirely in YG to eliminate any chance of the prongs and basket reflecting additional yellow into the stone while still providing that contrast against a yellow band. Also if you’d like a halo / hidden halo you can always request I-J coloured melee to better match the centre stone!

I have G, H & I diamonds set in platinum and even and L, and they all look pretty white to me too.

Yellow gold enclosed basket setting gave my E diamond a yellow tint... be careful with a setting choice

Hi! I have a GIA J, set in 18k rose gold, and all the surrounding melee/pave stones are G. I don't think they make the center stone look more 'yellow' or tinted at all. in fact, I think the smaller stones being a higher color make them pop more! I love my J in the rose gold. I feel like it gives off warmer flashes, but depending on light it looks bright white too.

I tend not to like warmish stones in yellow gold. I think they look better in either a whiter metal or in rose gold. Yellow gold IMO looks better with either starkly white stones, or nicely saturated colored stones

Yeah I would not consider these diamonds "warmer" lol, I clicked this thinking you were asking about M-Z color.

One issue you may not have considered is that the halo diamonds are going to look a lot whiter than the center diamond. There's nothing you can do about this even by going down in color for the halo diamonds because it's a result of the size difference not the body color. So whether or not that will bother you should be something you think about.

I think something in the I/J range in a YG halo ring would be fine. I have this halo ring that I purchased as a used semi-mount. I don't know its specs, but the stones in it are probably in the I or possibly J range. They aren't bright white. I put a colorless cz in the center and it was far brighter white than the halo diamonds. I ended up using a "Chinese White" cz that Wink at High Performance Diamonds used to sell, and Chinese White was supposed to be an I/J color. This is a 6.5mm center stone. Bad photo but you can tell that the yellow gold and warmer stones are complimentary to each other. The ring beside it is Moissanite from 2005/2006, before the whiter stuff they have today.

The round diamond solitaire ring is a lower J about .8ct. I tried it in white metals and yellow, and the yellow gold was decidedly more flattertig to it. The ring has white gold prongs, though. The square brilliant is a decidedly tinted Moissanite that looks absolutely yellow to me after I had cataract surgery.

My engagement ring is an N colored OEC and is set in a platinum basket with yellow gold band. I don't find that the setting makes it look warmer, in fact it often looks very white to me. For my lower colored stone I definitely would not use yellow gold prongs as I do think that would make the stone appear much warmer.

Which comes first for you, the diamond or the setting?

If you want a colorless look go with G in unplated white gold.

If you are ok with some warmth I would recommend you set H or I or J in yellow or rose gold. Everyone’s taste and eyesight varies. IMHO an I or J does not look good in white metal, especially from the side. But plenty of people are fine with it.

If you set an I or J in yellow gold, it might look yellower than if you set it in a white metal. IMHO that still looks better than setting an I or J in white metal because it does not contrast or look like it’s trying to be colorless. I am not a fan of I or J set in white metal prongs and yellow gold band for the same reason. Again no offense to anyone else and I know some people like that combo. You will notice you are getting conflicting messages because it really is a matter of taste.

‘What does your sweetheart find most important? Maybe they are one of those people who don’t even see warmth in an I or J.

I have a D set in rose gold and the color of the gold does reflect off the diamond from certain angles. I like the ring but probably could have saved money by getting a G or H. That’s why I asked whether you are choosing diamond or setting first.

We are probably confusing you even more!

My radiant cut is a GIA J color and it is in yellow gold. It looks beautiful and sparkles wonderfully. I totally advocate for warm diamonds in YG settings. It's a timeless look. Best of luck to you.
