SO… had a big TIRING weekend in DC.

On Friday we had our first of two cake tastings. Too Nice to Slice. Cake was moist and just sweet enough, the filings were crative and yummy and the skills of the baker in designing the exterior of the cakes and decorations were amazing. At 3.50 a slice what more could you ask for. Of course there’s a $40 delivery charge, and a $50 charge for the fondant ribbon I wanted. But she was personable, friendly and upfront.

Then we met with the first photographer—Alex Agaryshev. The chemistry wasn’t there I felt to start… but I wanted to see some of his weddings start to finish. Saw two. Had a problem with how nervous the bride was in one—and I felt that since he saw it translating to his lens he should have taken the time to talk to the bride and get her comfortable with the camera so that her pics would be better. He also said that he averages 500 proofs per complete wedding, which I felt was low. Still he was $1000 less than the other photographer and FI liked his style so he stayed on the list.

Next we met with Monica the Catering Sales Manager at The Madison Hotel. The hotel staff was nice, the food we ate at the bar was really good, and the rooms were clean and well maintained. The room for the ceremony was better than the pictures showed it to be and the ballroom—though without windows at all was bright. The staff was all very helpful. But the place didn’t well… grab me.

Then we met with Karen of Eikon Photo, WOW. Fabulous portfolio, great chemistry, felt she was really dependable… I asked her how she handles nervous brides and her answers were all right on. They bring their own extensive lighting equipment (Alex does not apparently) and she averages 800-1000 proofs per wedding. Plus all the editing and black and white and color modifications which Alex also doesn’t provide. SO… we are definitely going with them as our photographers.

And that was Friday. Whew!

Saturday morning we went to Hollin Hill Bakery in Alexandria. Now going in I knew that the cakes were 6.50 a slice and was prepared to just go with the baker we had met with the day before. Um. WOW. WOW. WOW. The other cake was CAKE. This was pastry. It was PHENOMINAL. Seriously. Best cake I’ve had hands down. Deserves every award the Washington Post gave it. We will be booking through them.

Then we went to the second venue of the weekend. Woodend Sanctuary—the Audubon Societies Mansion. Well… the grounds are lovely. The grove for the ceremony was just SPECTACULAR. BUT… the house itself was rundown. Especially the main room—Great Hall. The floors were worn—and not in a good historical way, the whole place was dirty and the carpets and appointments threadbare. The office was scary with stuffed dead birds and mice staring at you… AND it’s easily visible to the two main rooms flow of traffic. It would need A LOT of work and $$ for decorations for the mantles, banisters… a large cake and gift table set up with lots of flowers in the Great Hall to detract from the floor. And I wouldn’t feel comfortable without hiring a day of coordinator to make sure the place is clean and decorated appropriately. So… it’s got issues. Lots of them.

We didn’t get to meet with the florist, but I talked to her some more and am even more convinced that she’s the right one for us.

SO… we have a photographer. A baker. And a florist. But NO VENUE. Or date. So I can’t book any of it.

ARGH !!!

Very frustrating.

On the plus side one of my good friends who drove down to DC from NJ to see us has offered to do recon for venues for me… and as she went to Woodend with us, and I showed her The Madison Saturday evening—she knows what I’m looking for pretty clearly. Still… I need to find places for her to visit.

Well… that’s my report. LOL. LONG WINDED…. Sorry.

Looks like a productive weekend! Wasn''t there another hotel you were going to look at in DC? The venue is being the tricky part for me too... there doesn''t seem to be any that have everything! Good luck on finding the right one... that backery looks really yummy too!

Sounds like a whirlwind of a weekend! But at least two big things were crossed off the list. Too bad about Woodend though. I grew up right down the street from there and I agree with you about the grounds, they ARE beautiful. It''s a shame about the state of big house up there. All those years and I never actually went into the house.

Did you look into Brookside Gardens by the way? It''s located in Wheaton, MD. They have some nice venues for the ceremony and I think they have reception facilities as well. I have seen quite a few weddings there. Just a thought.

Gypsy : )

Glad you''re back on the radar here! I started a "Where''s Gypsy" thread last week... I wanted to know how everything was going! You have so much going on and it sounds like you''re making progress!

btw: How is Duncan doing?? The new job? New city?

Best of luck,
Aussie

Wow, you were productive!!! Congratulations on finding a great photographer. I''m glad you didn''t go with the guy without the chemistry. You have to spend aaaallll day with the photographer and the photos last years while the wedding is only one day, waaay important for their to be the right kind of chemistry. The second cake vendor sounds amazing! I''m getting hungry.

I didn''t get a chance to see Brookside gardens-- mostly because I''m trying to stay as close to the district as possible... but I will definitely add it to the list.

Hotels, yes there were a few others on the list-- but for various customer service reasons they were eliminated (most because they didn''t get back to me, and when they did they had no recall of previous issues we''d discussed).

I also went to The City Club of DC. I don''t want my ceremony in a lobby. And the club itself was just too dark and oppresive.

Aussie, HI!! I missed that thread… missed most of them truth to tell. You just reminded me that I didn’t update my Duncan thread! I had a dream I did… and well… I didn’t realize till just now I didn’t in reality. I hope that doesn’t make me sound insane.

Duncan is fine!!! His biopsy came back completely negative—and we were REALLY REALLY happy we went with a specialist this time.

The job is good. I’m enjoying the work… my boss is very productive and constantly pushes both of us to get things done in impossibly short amounts of time… but I’m never bored and I feel really good about the work I’m doing. They are going to decide on my status—permanent or well… gone on December 1st. So If all goes well, we’ll be moving around Christmas time to CA. My car got here last night. What a PITA.

Living with my grandparents is different. But I am spending a nice amount of time with them, and as they are quite old that’s really nice. Still, I really am looking forward to getting a little apartment in San Jose close to work cause the 1 hour commute is really wearying.

That’s about all that’s up in my life. Some wedding planning, lots of work, long commute… miss my fiancé and my cats, my dog and my friends—including my pricescope friends… A LOT. But things will be better if they make me permanent. And so far my boss has given me very good feedback and our personalities mesh.

HOW ARE YOU GUYS????

I didn’t even get to Quest last weekend and I was 10 miles away!!

Gypsy:

Welcome to DC! I'm from here (at least for the past 11 years!) and would be happy to offer any assistance in terms of finding a venue. I work for a national non-profit that puts on big gala events in DC every year and I also have a professional concierge friend who can help with sites.

Good luck!

Clarygrace!

What a generous offer that I am absolutely going to take you up on!

We are now looking at Trageron at the International School as a possibitity. They only work with 3citron caterers so I''m waiting for a qoute from them.

I''ve emailed the people at Meridian begging and pleading for a reduced rate for Monday Sept 3rd (Labor Day Monday)-- they haven''t responded to date.

Beyond that-- I''m a bit stumped.

Our guest list is at 70. We are expecting about 65. For a small ceremony somplace "DC" and a Brunch reception to follow. Sometime in August or September or October 2007.

When we were in DC we walked right by the Army Navy Club and my jaw about dropped to the floor it was so stunning. But I have a feeling that even if I were miraculously able to find a sponsor, they would be out of my price range.

My price range is 100-120 person. About. That includes everything though. Venue, ceremony, food, service, tax, alcohol. So it''s a pretty slender budget. The absolute maximum I can spend is $7500 on all that for 65 people. I would obviously prefer to spend less. LOL.

Brunch buffet:
Scrambled eggs (kids)
Crab Eggs Benedict
Prime Rib or NY strip carving station
Ham/Bacon/Turkey sausage
Potatoes
Some Pasta
A couple of Salads-- one a Caprese if possible
Pancakes/French Toast or Waffle station
Fruit
Cheese
Breads, bagels, pastries
Juices, sodas, water

Plus Bloody Mary''s, Mimosas, Screwdrivers, And Kir Royales for alcohol.

Plus anything else they want to throw in: Quiches, Smoked Salmon, Shrimp cocktail. Whatever.

That''s what I want.

Hope I''m not taking unfair advantage of a short acquiantance.

Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

Gypsy! Sounds like you got a TON accomplished! At least you know WHO you are going to want to hire for your wedding, so alot of the hard leg work is complete. When (around) are you planning on getting married?

Oh yeah... the headbutts were KEY. Let me tell you. Truth to tell, you all were such a wonderful help. I can''t even explain how much....

I will try to be here more often... it''s just hard right now cause I don''t have ready access to a computer at my grandparent''s home so I just have to log on from work... and well... there''s just never enough time.

I am so touched you remembered me! Thank you Aussie. ((HUGS))

Thanks Sweetpea!

Well, the hope is August-October 2007 sometime. LOL.

Yeah, once I get the venue... and my gown gets here it''s all going to fall into place. I hope.
