Rod, what an accomplishment!
Thank''s so much!!!

hello ladies ETA: and Gents!!!

today is my first day back to the gym since our wedding and honeymoon.

i haven't been for about a month, but our honeymoon was pretty active -- though i'm sure all of our adventuring didn't quite make up for all of the delicious food that i ate with complete and utter abandon knowing i no longer was the object of everyone's attention at the wedding
emstar.gif

i'm thinking of just avoiding the scale.

i'll probably do some cardio and then pilates. it's going to take a bit of time to get back into a routine and back on track with food -- but i had such a great experience leading up to the wedding that i want to keep at it.

Yay! Day one of acting right and eating right has gone GREAT! I thought I''d HATE it once I got back to the gym, but nah, I loved it. The elliptical kicked my butt *literally,* but it was still good!

9.gif
Great job, Rod! And to have your own POSTER, too. So cool!
9.gif

I have lost over 100 pounds myself, but I got no poster!

Seriously, though, you look good and have done a GREAT thing for your body! I was reading your elliptical regimen and it would all but *kill* me! I like to do 20 minutes, then weights, then 15 more on the elliptical. It does do wonders for ticking off the calories, though. Although I don''t completely trust the calorie counters on the machines. Something about the feel of the back of my shirt being damp makes me feel like I''ve accomplished *so* much!

Again, good job! I''m glad you''ve made such a positive change in your lifestyle. How much younger do you feel now?

I was well over 250 pounds in my teens, and now at 26, I feel SO much better than I remember feeling even in high school. It''s amazing what dropping weight you''ve been lugging around can do for a person.

hehe i just went to whole foods and loaded up on the alexia fries...three new packs..whoo hoo.
31.gif

OH and last week i gave in and got some oreida tater tots from safeway so those are in the freezer too. mmmmm. i just have to figure out a 'controlled environment' to eat them because i'm sure i will want to go nuts!

at whole foods they didnt have halibut burgers today, booo and since i'm not a fan of salmon burgers really...i got us a rotisserie chicken which smells divine and i just have to heat it up. and we'll have a salad too. i figure if i don't really have to cook tonite it'd be fab since i am working out. and maybe i'll toss some fries in..hee!

also a great snackie snack is the frozen edamame from whole foods, they have the unshelled ones, you just pop them in the micro or boil them for a bit and you can eat a handful or two for some protein and low calories and relatively no fat. yum.

breakfast was kashi oatmeal and lunch was a lean cuisine and a nectarine, but i am starving now! i'm thinking kashi high fiber granola bar and a small 2% choco milk will keep me going til my class and then dinner. have a great evening everyone!

What is edamame?

And, the tater tots aren''t TOO TOO bad if you bake them til they''re crispy then pat the grease off them, like a few times. When I make them, I limit myself to baking only a serving. That way, before I get more, I have to go to the whole effort of heating the oven again and all that stuff. Usually it works. Not worth the effort, so I just eat them SLOWLY and savor them. Sorry if I created that craving for you, Mara.

LOL i was SO thinking of you when I was buying them fisher...hehee but once I get a craving I have to give in at some point. Or else I just keep thinking about it. But for me it''s funny, I can buy them and put them in the freezer and then just think about them. But chances are I won''t eat them for a while. Esp with the Alexia fries that I LOVE that are a lot healthier. But I figure a serving of tots can''t be a big deal after a workout one nite!!

Edamame are soy beans in pods, kind of like larger looking green beans, they are really yummy, you can get them at japanese places. It''s a veggie kind of snack but high in protein. And pretty filling actually. Sometimes we''ll have fish with a side of boiled and salted edamame.

Hmm, I doubt I''ll have much luck finding edamame in my podunk neck of the woods, but my next trip to Atlanta, I''ll do a search for some *unless that ever-so-wanted question gets popped* and try them out. Do you boil them in the pods? I''m guessing not? I don''t know these things.

I hear you on the cravings thing. I was crazying out over some cookie dough, and I had my fix and now I feel perfectly fine again.

I''ve also never heard of these special fries you speak of, but I''ll google them.

the Alexia fries and the Edamame are available at places like Whole Foods, Trader Joes etc.

Wow, Jen, I''m impressed. Any secrets you''d care to share with us? I mean, that''s a VERY impressive accomplishment!

Really, reading this thread each week makes me happy - it makes me feel like there''s hope! I''m not going for anything as ambitious as 100 pounds - really just trying to get rid of about 10 or 15... Somehow living life without soccer practices and a coach from hell for the past few years has allowed me to um, drift from my optimal weight : (

It''s funny, Mara, I read about your daily walks and I''m always impressed how you fit them all in. And yet then I sit down to think about it, and I end up walking to the T round trip maybe 2-3 times a day... and that ends up being maybe 1- 1 1/2 hours a day. And yet I never think of it as ''exercise,'' - just having to get to work, or the gym, or to run errands. I''ll have to remember those! So perhaps there''s hope of being "Mara fit..." someday!!

Rod, tomorrow I''m going to try lengthening my elliptical run so that eventually I might be able to keep up with you... if that''s possible. That poster is rather incredible really - and picture comparisons really do say the most. It''s like one of those terrible hair loss commercials, except, well, I actually believe you

Aussiegirl : p

Well Aussie, I''m not THIN now, by any stretch of the imagination now, but I''ve been able to be NOT fat, which is good. I tend to fluctuate between 170 and 160, but I''d like to be closer to 150. That''d be sweet.

Anyway, what I do is I eat right most the time, I don''t eat in big quantities at a time, and I try to do something active every day. I have a doggie, and she''s very hyper, so she keeps me hyper and active, too. Besides that, I''ve fallen in love with the elliptical machine! It''s great!

I think once you start losing, it''s invigorating and it makes you want to keep it up, too.

It''s stil a struggle since I was *so* big and my body won''t ever be "tight" even if I do lose more weight. If I posted a picture of me, you''d not even guess that I''ve lost so much weight, since I still look pretty "hefty" in my opinion.

When I snack, I go for things like carrot sticks, pretzels, frozen grapes, etc. But I still like cheez-its, so I don''t deprive myself of cravings. I just regulate.

I used to do Weight Watchers, sort of *never a member.* Just did the points card thingy. Now I sort of think about it, but not too much. I got obsessive for a while.

Oooh, and I drink a TON of water. It really does keep you healthier and it fills you up faster, too.

That''s what I did, and try to keep doing.

Thanks for sharing Jen : ) I appreciate any advice I can get!!

In college, when I lost all the weight, I was walking like 6 miles a day. Three in the morning, three at night. I suspect if I fought the heat and got my butt outta bed earlier every morning, I could drop down pretty quickly to where I want to be. Decisions, decisions.

Dang, I''m gone for a week and it''s a whole new world here in the land of workout thread, lol!
9.gif
We''ve been switching internet/phone providers in the past few days and at work our load has been a little heavier than usual, so I haven''t had time to log on!

Congrats to all those who''ve joined the workout thread, or are at least lurking...it''s fun to see new people here!

I''ve been doing the usual--walking to and from work a lot more, trying to save gas $, ya know. Also, been bringing my jump rope to work (I know! After the "chewing out" I got from you guys a week or so ago I decided I better get with the program and stop whining about the heat, lol!), so I jump rope with my office manager in the back parking lot for a few minutes a day until we can''t stand it anymore, then we usually go for a walk for about 20 minutes around the neighborhood. I''m lucky I work and live in the same area...I get lots of exercise in that way.

My eating recently has not been the best! I''ve been trying to do the vegan thing, but keep (dammit) getting cravings for pizza, of all things, even though it''s so hot. So I''ve resorted to buying vegetarian cheese shreds and melting that onto pasta dishes I make at home--I do regular cheese on half of a dish for DH, and veggie cheese on the other half for me. It works, and controls my cravings. As far as sweets I am still doing the Popsicle or Breyers fruit-sicles, which I love.

Michael finally put his foot down tonight and made himself a chicken breast and Rice-a-Roni. Yuck! He brings all this processed crap home after I go grocery-shopping for fun, healthful things...I guess they''re not so "fun" to him. And I''m FINE with that, lol! So I had a Boca burger grilled and some vegetarian canned baked beans (I know, kinda gross but I love the taste...I used to love cans of Pork N Beans as a kid
emembarrassed.gif
) but they are really good and FULL of protein!

Workout wise, I have been religiously lifting my weights at home, again jumping rope at work and walking when I get the chance. I have been wrapped up in visiting with friends lately and haven''t made time to go to the gym still. WHY oh why did I sign up for that membership I knew damn well I wasn''t going to use, lol! It has become a thorn in my side! I''m pissed that the money is coming out of my bank account every month, yet I still don''t want to leave my daily activities to get over there, or change my schedule to accomodate it! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME???

lol aussie, sounds like you walk a whole lot more than me!!!! so you definitely do your 60 minutes a day plus more! i think if people incorporated walking more into their daily life...we''d all be a lot more fit!!
5.gif
sometimes i read about the gals on here walking 5 or 6m a day and think wow my 2m is nothing!! so i aspire to be like you other gals who walk more miles per day!!

HAH Mara,

All my walking means is that:
-I picked a LOUSY location for a house... far from EVERYTHING
-I have a job where parking would cost nearly 1/4 as much as I would make that day
-I have doggies who MUST be walked in between work/workouts/errands...
-I forget things and have to walk home... a lot

so it''s not intentional exercise, it''s poor planning! either way - it counts I suppose.

Aussiegirl : p

btw... I saw a doogie today and my 1st reaction was - "There''s Portia!" I hadn''t seen one of these cuties in a while - probably since I started reading on here... SEE how you and your furry lvoed one have affected me? Her name has replaced the entire breed''s name!

whatever it is...it''s awesome that your lifestyle has so much walking going on! i read an article recently about how part of what contributes to the american obesity problem is that the lifestyle has moved from mobility to a driving society...aka driving the car up the street is easier than walking etc. communities are not built for walking around or going somewhere local...everything is far so you need to drive.

oh and lol....i do the same with people''s dogs. look there''s a Rocky! or ''it''s Maggie!''...Portia responds to names so it''s pretty funny when she is with us and we see other dogs.

Wow Rod - you look incredible!!! Not even like the same person, you are smokin' fit now and a true inspiration to many!!!!

Sorry I wasn't here to help with the poster, I was thinking you could have saved it to your pictures then sent the pic as an attachment to Irina - anyway you got there!

It is amazing the attitude I have now that fitness is an important part of my life and to be looked forward to, not dreaded like I used to. I am so enjoying the benefits, now I am getting addicted to the Levi's fitted T shirts and they look good, amazing what regular exercise can do.

Rod, you are a demon on the elliptical, are you sure you aren't bionic?

Rod you were saying you were sitting in your employee's hearse, are you in the funeral business?
34.gif

Aussiegirl, I do 30 mins in the elliptical, warm up on level 3 or 4 then crank it up every few minutes as it gets easier to about level 12 or 13 at the moment. I prefer to do it on manual rather than a program at this stage as I have only been doing the gym for 7 weeks. I then finish with the treadmill at 3.5 mph but at max incline for 15 mins, so 45 mins daily.

Mara congrats on the shorts, it makes all the effort SO worthwhile

Great job everyone!

Mara what is a tapioca iced drink please?

good morning all! i made it to the gym and like fisher, it wasn't as terrible as i thought it would be. i ran for about 35 minutes and i was happy to see that all the endurance i'd been building up over the past months didn't all disappear. i also couldn't stay off the scale, the curiousity was too great -- and i was happy to discover that i only added a few pounds from my wedding/honeymoon
1.gif
not the 10+ it felt like.

we really just have to get settled in, because our real struggle right now is grocery shopping. our apartment is in such disarray from gifts and being gone, plus we have no car, so it's tough to manage to get to the store and find the time to whip up a healthy dinner sometime before 10:30 at night. i think in the next week, when life readjusts to normal, it'll get better.

monarch -- picturing you in the parking lot, jumping rope brings makes me smile

WOW WOW WOW!!!! Losing over 100 pounds is an amazing accomplishment and you absolutely deserve a BIG POSTER, not a mini poster like I got!!!!!

You keep up the fantastic work and stay healthy!!

In answer to your question, I feel younger and better than I did at 25, so at 51 (rapidly approaching 52), I feel like I''m in my mid 20''s. Now, if only I looked as young as I feel........LOL

Last night instead of going to the gym, we went for a run. For the first time in my life I hit a runner''s high. It happened around the 3 mile mark and instead of being tired and thinking when will this end, I found all this extra energy. My stride increased, I began passing younger runners and a sense of euphoria took over. It was just about the most amazing feeling I''ve had since the "Rebuild Rod" campaign started nearly 8 montsh ago.

Paul has done the US Classic 10K in Atlanta every year since something like 1993, and he''s noticed how, over the years, he''s now 29, he''s coming in more and more toward the stragglers at the end. We did it together in 2005 and he seemed surprised that I was pushing him along, particularly in the uphill portions. He says this year he''ll *whoop my butt,* but I''m rather doubtful. Maybe we''ll whoop on each other.

I have a picture of me with my oldest neice when she was first born that I keep at work. It''s fun to see the reactions when people ask who those people are and I tell them it''s me and my niece Morgan. Paul still swears I don''t look a thing like the pictures of me in high school and the early years of college. I thank God I don''t!

For me, even though I suppose it can sound a bit vain, that is a big part of what inspires me when I start to feel like saying, "forget walking, forget the gym, forget healthy food. I want what I want." Other than feeling better now, I also really like the positive comments and I like knowing that I can shop in whatever store I want to. (Well, other than those ridiculous stores that sell only Juniors 0-7.)

There was a time in college when I was way too obsessed and I got really pretty sick because of this desire to be like 130 pounds, which is way, way too thin for me. I''m 5''6 almost 5''7, and according to weight/height charts, I should be somewhere around 133-149, but on me, anything less than like 150 looks emaciated. My cheeks sink in, I have little energy and I just don''t feel well. Granted, 170 isn''t where I need to be, either, but I feel healthy and good at 155-160.

I try not to focus on weight in pounds and instead in how I look and feel. It''s hard sometimes, though. Especially when I think about wedding dress sizes being abnormally SMALL and the horrors of having to order a size 16 when I KNOW I''m not that size. Aye.

Good morning,
WOW! You guys are doing great and such great accomplishments! I have been a slacker so far this week. My eating''s been fine but no workouts yet. I had planned to go to the gym last night but just couldn''t bring myself to go. We even missed my son''s tae kwon do class due to it.
7.gif
If I was really on schedule, I also would''ve worked out this morning, but I really like my morning sleep. This is tough! So maybe tonight. I have no excuses other than pure laziness and feeling very emotional due to other life issues so all I really want to do is watch tv. Bad, bad, bad... I know! I think I''ll go for a bike ride tonight..something fun w/my son that doesn''t feel like real exercise. That''s what I need.

Ok, feeling a bit better and congratulations to everyone who is doing so well. You guys are amazing!!

Oh Thank You Thank You Thank You Lorelei.........

Last time I checked I wasn''t bionic. Thanks for the ''dedededededede'' though. It reminds me of the thread you and I traded about Beatle songs not too long ago. That was a fun thread.

I''m pretty competitive, which I suppose helped fuel my elliptical sessions. I not only want to outperform the ''youngsters,'' but it''s important that I beat my own times, distances, RPMs.

Also, I''m not in the funeral business. I''m in the technical staffing business and am the Director of the Client Support Services Group for a major staffing firm. I just have a rather unique employee in that she is "goth" and drives a hearse. You know........Different Strokes. I''m pretty liberal and as long as her "gothism" doesn''t affect the office or her work, it''s fine with me.

Anyway, thanks for the accolades. I''m really enjoying this thread. Still wish it wasn''t in Ladies Waiting, but hey, the friendships and encouragement are worth it.

fisher..sometimes it is tempting to think about living a life of having whatever you want, whenever you want but that quote...something like nothing tastes as good as thin feels...but for me it's more like nothing tastes as good as being fit and healthy feels. i won't ever be THIN like i was in high school thin again, but i am definitely in shape and healthy. and that part feels really good. and it's through conscious life changes. to me that's more empowering than a 25 inch waistline or anything like that. plus i just remember how it feels after eating a mcdonalds meal or after stuffing myself with pasta at a fab restaurant and how gross and stuffed and icky i feel and i feel definitely like i am doing the right thing. plus it's not about depriving yourself. last nite i looked at the tater tot nutrition and the alexia nutrition on one of the bags i got (oven crinkles with salt and pepper) and i was like okay so are the tater tots SO worth it that the same serving size is worth 9g of fat and 170 calories vs 4g of fat and 120 calories for the alexia? i thought, no it's really not. not right now. so we had the alexia and it was awesome, because let's face it, oven baked potatoes are oven baked potatoes, no matter how much grease they do or don't have on them. i love potatoes. so anyway i may have those tater tots soon but i was not bothered in the least by putting them back in the freezer, because i just didn't feel like sacrificing for them yet. but i also don't deny myself the occasional scoop of yummy ice cream from baskin robbins! i guess it's about choices.

anyway, babbling...but today i feel really tired, inside my bones. i think i am overdoing it a little bit with the workouts. so today i'm just going to do a 1m-2m walk either today or tonite with greg and that's it. tomorrow night i am working out again and i want to be well rested. i just ate some kashi heart smart oatmeal and a small bowl of this nature's path high fiber high protein cereal from whole foods..with my coffee. i am hoping that will perk me up. i could have easily slept another 2 hours or something this morning.

last nite went to class, came home and heated up the WF rotisserie chicken, which was fab by the way, i just ate one breast off it, had some salad with cranberries and walnuts and vinaigrette, and then a serving of the oven crinkle potatoes with a little ketchup. yum...hit the spot and was just right.

I know what you mean, but it''s hard. I weigh myself daily and I know I shouldn''t, but I seem to have to satisfy my curiosity every morning. It''s often disheartening to see that I worked out for 2. 5 hours and ate only a "Healthy Choice" 280 calorie frozen dinner (with a Fuji Apple for dessert) and gained a pound. As long as I continue working out hard, and eating healthy and my clothes fit fine, I shouldn''t worry about the scale, but I do..............
38.gif

that is why i don't use the scale...it lies. first off, muscle weighs more than fat, but not only that, your weight can fluctuate daily as much as up to what...3-4 lbs? water weight and all that....depends on how much salt you had or didn't have, for women what time of the month you are at, and if you are retaining water (moreso than men i think) etc. the scale is very inaccurate IMO.

when we were in TX and i weighed myself on their scale, it was not the digital type, so i saw it start at 0 and it went to 150 when i got on. well ffw'd a month and a half, the mirror is telling me that my body is changing, the tape measure is concurring and my clothes gave the thumbs up and i went to mom's house and got on her scale, which is digital and it says 151. i was like WHAT?!?! i gained a pound after all of this?? i was pretty upset, but she told me all the same stuff i just posted, about muscle especially since i know i am building that. anyway, it can be discouraging...but all i know is that i fit into those darn shorts so the scale must be lying! hehee. this is why i am really glad i don't keep a scale in the house. i'd be obsessed with what it DIDN'T say.

Exactly Mara. So, why do I do it to myself????? My trainer has been pushing us towards the "Big Boy Toys" (free weights) a lot lately. So, I''ve been actually bench pressing higher levels of weights. And I know muscle weighs more and I''ve actually grown some farily decent muscles. But I still get on the scale and get disappointed in my weight. Goofy I know.........

Wow, this thread is hopping! Glad I came back to so much encouragement.

First of all Rod and Fisher, that is AWESOME! Very inspiring, so congrats to all you have achieved.

I do keep a scale in the house...I don''t obsess over it, but I do find it keeps me accountable. If I don''t jump on the scale for a while, I don''t get that reality check that I need to realize that stuffing lots of food in my face DOES take its toll on my body. It takes a few pounds before the clothes feel tight, and I want to get back on track BEFORE that happens.

So speaking of getting back on track, I''m doing it again this morning. I had a great trip this weekend up to Carmel, and for the most part, we ate OK. Even in nice restaurants, we just ordered a few appetizers and ate slowly while sharing each of them. Not too much alcohol either...it was too hot at the race track. My body must have been burning a lot more calories trying to keep cool! We did a lot of walking and hiking, so I didn''t feel too guilty.
