What‘s your favourite diamond colour and why?

I love diamonds. All shapes and sizes and colors. As long as they are well cut. I do have color preferences however.

For Modern round cuts G is my sweet spot. I wouldn't say no to an E or F though. I think whiter colors work for modern cut stones. And for step cuts I like them in higher colors. D or E would be yummy for step cuts.

For Old cut stones it depends. If I have to pick a color without seeing the stone I would say J is my sweet spot. But it does depend on the specific stone for me with old cuts. There is a tradeoff with higher colors in old cuts that one needs to see with their eyes. We are all different and vary in our preferences. No right or wrong just what makes your heart beat faster.

I love all colored gems but hate windows so that is critical for me more than color.

for me: i have different colour tolerances for different cut stones. It also depends on the project that i am working on.

I have only seen a few stones of varying colours in real life, so i can only comment on what i have seen.
I am pretty much a white metal kinda person.

Step cuts- E colour main stone.. in eternity FG is fine.
MRB- EF colour in earrings.
OEC- I colour for earrings in white metal.. ST colour in a YG ring
FCD- love all of them..current favs: Gray Violet and pinks/ Blue green/ Yellow Oranges, all of these are set in WG.

that's a good point about the cut...i think step cut/rectangular stones look good colorless esp if you are going for that effect of pools of water reflecting on each other that some step cuts have

So, what if we changed the question a little bit.

If all of the alphabet colors were the same price, what would your choice be? I wonder how the markets would treat the D-Z colors if all were priced the same?

Thoughts?

D. No questions asked. Price is what is holding me down and makes me reason and find "the sweet spot." But if prices were the same, how would one put a price on a rarity (D color)? Since there is a huge difference in prices as the carat weight goes up, I stick with a bigger stone in G/H over a smaller stone in D color.

I have no idea how the markets would treat it if all colors were priced the same, but I'd pick the lower colors every day of the week, even if the prices were the same. The highest I have is a J, and I've never wanted to go higher. I just prefer warmth. (and colored diamonds)

HI:

Every ring I see on PS is a dream ring. I cannot say, how many times, I've been inspired by the "alphabet" and then how it is curated.

Like @AV_ my first love was "yellows". Still dreaming of one.

Otherwise my heart belongs to D. all D long. It is what it is.

cheers--Sharon

This is what I have answered above, since the question in the title of the thread is about colour with no mention of price. The trandition of setting white diamonds in silver then any white metal tells why I was ever in doubt about the current standard - it is obvious these things do not like gold & I so do.

I wonder how the markets would treat the D-Z colors if all were priced the same?

What would happen if anyone offered O to Z colors for prices corresponding to the D to I range today? Fun! (run) - there is too much precedent...

I keep asking myself if I would pay for any reason, and the answer is yes - but I am a fool with particular tastes who bonds with jewelry for life; and would still want something for it: a signature cut, ready to wear.

If they were all alphabet diamonds were priced the same: I haven’t seen a D, so I need to see if that works for me.. I am sure it would.

the type of cut also would make a diffenrce.

The highest colour I have been shown is an E in a step cut. I have an E asscher.. I love her...

the highest MRB is an F but they are at 3mm, so would be hard to say how much of impact it would have against an E step cut.

I do like my antique cut stones... I favour the I colour as it shows little warmth (pastel vanilla) which is quite a romantic colour for me. I have not seen antique cut stones higher colours (D-H) in real life, so I can’t compare.

Ooooo, I like this game!
Two diamonds: one D in platinum EC and one warmer OEC. Anything vanilla, creamy.

I'm an F/G fan!

Been comparing a lot since I got my first stone. And I would say, a minimum of G.
I agree with @AprilBaby , an I color would be obvious and the shape contributes on its visibility too.

Well, even for rounds, lower than G seems obvious already.

But then, some would like lower colors and yes they are lovely too. I think it depends on who is wearing and the sensitivity of that person when it comes to color.

Sometimes the color grading depends on whether it is done by GIA (more rigorous color grading) or AGS (more lenient.) It also depends whether it is a high or low G or H. Here is a picture of a G and an H colored diamond. Color is not as obvious, especially when they are facing up mounted (and not enlarged as they are in the photo.)

On other people I appreciate every color, but on me I prefer icy white, so I buy F color and above, only my melee diamonds are F/G.

Admitting I've been tempted by a 2 ct G, it was a high G, but I let it go because I knew I would have had color remorse.

My answer remains the same.

I think all colors are pretty, but I love diamonds in the D and E color range. There's something about the icy whiteness that appeals to me, especially in rings.

Since I love D/E colors, my answer remains the same. The only time I consider something in the G range is for size and price.

Still the same answer, G/H would be my sweet spot, and I would not go below a J as I wear only white metals.

DK :))

Obviously my answer doesn't change, only F or above for me.

I love lower colors(anything after K) and old wonky cuts. Trouble being, I can't afford any of them:lol:
BUT, I will happily accept any color any of you would like to gift me:bigsmile:

I own a J, K, O-P, and a Q-R. The QR is by far my favorite color.

Please share pictures of your higher grade diamonds, love to see the array.

Can I trade in my G CBI for a D? ...

Let me think of my diamonds over .5 ct:
E - marquise pendant
F - marquise 80s RHR
F - pear
F - CBI
E - CBI
2 F CBI side stones
Q CBI

So I guess that F is my favorite color. Still in the colorless range and a good value.
Would love a D but too expensive.

I often wonder if some people have tone/ hue to your skin that makes one metal versus another look good regardless of the diamonds color grade. I wear both white and yellow gold and love the way it looks on my skin equally. My ER is platinum, the diamond is MRB is not certified, it was appraised. It could be a J,K or L. It doesn't look yellowish in the Platinum.
I was going to send it to GIA to get it evaluated, get the dossier and possibly sell it to invest in a higher alphabet diamond.
Well events altered those plans.

@Ceilimom This is the time of the year when I get a slight [preemptive] tan, and silver grows on me ,) - but I return to mixing everything, every year. Let to blanch for years [jail or libraries!], my skin wants to be a very light olive - the kind of tint that never exists in the lightest foundation shades [peeve.]

F to G.

Way cheaper than D, but I still can's make out body color.

@Ceilimom even before I had my colours analysed ages ago, I knew I did not like yellow gold.

DK :))

This is a really difficult question to answer... I would probably gravitate to either ends of the spectrum. Tbh I can’t make out the difference between D-H with my eyes really, so I’d be open to anything in that range with the cut/carat/shape that I’m looking for. On the other hand, I would still go for X-Z ‘alphabet yellows’ as the affordable cousin of fancies. I don’t know if I would go for the in between colors like L/M unless we’re talking OECs.

Yes, choice of favorite metals does have a lot to do with color preferences, I think.

Had an N and loved it but kept thinking it was sub par because it was not D, E, F so "upgraded" to an F and then to an E, the icy white did nothing for me, wore it rarely, so now I have a K and so much happy. I just love the chameleon qualities of the warmer colors.
