What‘s your favourite diamond colour and why?

I personally like D/E diamonds and L-M-N-O, depending on the cut and setting :)

Let me think of my diamonds over .5 ct:
E - marquise pendant
F - marquise 80s RHR
F - pear
F - CBI
E - CBI
2 F CBI side stones
Q CBI

So I guess that F is my favorite color. Still in the colorless range and a good value.
Would love a D but too expensive.

Picture please of your Q

With a diamond that has color, for me it has to be the right shade and there needs to be an even saturation. No splotches. Some love brownish, greyish, brownish pink coloring, it has to speak to you and that's what matters.

Sometimes the color grading depends on whether it is done by GIA (more rigorous color grading) or AGS (more lenient.) It also depends whether it is a high or low G or H. Here is a picture of a G and an H colored diamond. Color is not as obvious, especially when they are facing up mounted (and not enlarged as they are in the photo.)

Yuh, you have a point there as color grades can be a +/-.
Yes, bottom part is where the color is more obvious to see, but I think from face up it is still visible unless your diamond really blings well and you get distracted by it, maybe then the warmer color may not be obvious.

I guess, I'm just sensitive when it comes to colors. I can really see the tinge every time I compared stones.

I am not a fan of fancy colors. I abhor chocolate and black diamonds. DEF are my colors.

Can we see photos of some of these diamonds? Very enticing descriptions.

I'd say it might be "J" for me. I have an "L" and on a cloudy day in my car the tint bothers me. 99.9% of the time it's perfection though. I am not color sensitive and I'd say mine must be cut pretty well because it faces up so white almost all the time. I don't have to play games when I take pics to make it look white, it just looks white.

For a modern cut I think I would need whiter though, like G/H/I, but for old cuts they don't show color as much so i think J

So, WOW. So many different answers, and NONE of them are wrong. People like what they like. Cool.

So why is it, if you go to a hundred bricks and mortar jewelers, over 95% of them will tell you how D, E, F and possibly G are the best and everything else you only get because you want bigger than you can afford?

@Wink, I GENUINELY RESPECT YOU, I know you're an expert and I know that you sell gorgeous diamonds, but please, you should resign to the fact that , if money was no object, most of people would buy colorless diamonds.
Blanket is too short: real people have a budget and try to get their best which for someone means more carat, for someone else means color or clarity.

There is a noticible difference between DEF colors and lower colors if you look at them side by side; flourescence can help, cut helps a lot putting emphasis to fire, anyway colorless is always whiter and appealing to most of buyers.

I' m very grateful to this forum because I learnt that cut is king and so many other niche notions, but I had the chance to compare a lot of diamonds with my own eyes and I found I have my own taste; since I spend my own money and since I buy diamonds for myself, my informed opinion is the only opinion that counts.
By the way I buy F color or above, IF or VVS, carat is not my priority:

Best to you,

I believe that is what I am trying to say. It is my opinion that it should be the informed opinion of the buyer that makes the decision.

I have clients who genuinely prefer the I-K colors, as well as clients who have the eyes to see minute differences between a D and an E, face up. I enjoy working with all of them to find the best diamond for them that meets their desires.

I do thank you for your kind words, they are appreciated.

I really liked Wink's reply, so respectful and inclusive of all view points. Someday I hope to buy one of his diamonds, one of low color and clarity. Layla convinced me they are without equal, whatever the color. I haven't see one post from a CBI owner who isn't head over heels about their diamond, whatever the specs.

Would love an E or F if I can afford it in the size I want. Have to ultimately go with a G, I think. Darn 3 kids in college can take all the diamond fun away .

LOL, I only had two. I can tell you that once they are gone from college, you wish they were still coming home for Spring Break and Summer vacation.

Selfishly, I still wish they were dependent on mom and I. Realistically, they are both fantastically successful and we are so proud of them. (And we do our best to spoil the grands!

That is awesome, Wink. I know! That’s what my husband keeps telling me. We are fully enjoying all 3 of them being home with the quarantine. They will all be gone in the Fall or whenever school really starts. One is off to med school, one will be a college senior, and my baby will be a college freshman.

For me, mostly, K to M.

I have outliers but that seems to be my usual preference range. I do have a pair of loose stones that are waiting to be set that if I remember are F color. To me, that's too bright. I haven't done anything with them partially due to that.

No one really cares but i love D (I’ve never owned one), and E color diamonds. Anything lower than that and I can see color in them. I’ve never been able to get over my love for icy white.

There are a lot of variables at play - personal preferences, cut, carat, setting, etc. But I gravitate to D-F for engagement rings as I am very color sensitive. I do have some G-I jewelry that face up very white that I'm happy with as well. G-I are great values in terms of maximizing "bang for the buck."
