What are the engagement (ring) customs where you live?

Rezi''s post got me thinking...what are the customs in your part of the country or world regarding engagement rings? Are they given to the bride to be, and what is the usual size? How soon before marriage is the ring given????

This isn''t a custom I follow, but one I learned about from an Egyptian friend. She wears her engagement ring on her right hand. The wedding ceremony involves the switching of the ring from the right to the left hand, so that means the same ring acts as an engagement ring and wedding band.
