What are you wearing today? Pearl edition!

I’m getting this

That colour. I couldn’t not.

I’m thinking a between-the-finger style ring. So the pearl isn’t quite as protuberant.

This is a 14mm pearl - it’s not sanity-defyingly large on the hand… I think 15mm will work fine

In-person both the white and the deep gold have smoother skins and more contrast. But the peachy *colour*, OMG. It’s got this super strong pink iridescence, with just a hint of green and blue - it reads really flesh toned in-person. Such an interesting colour…

The deep gold is a 13.2mm Granpearl that’s headed off to a friend shortly  And the white is one of the Paspaley gems that Crystal_Dreams found for me, 14.4mm. Peachy is 15.6mm.

So… My pearls girls and I, we figure well, this pearl is already huge, might as well lean into the huge, right? So I’m going to halo it

Takahashi half-drilled it, and Sako found these 3mm old mine babies, and he’s going to make the mount. It’ll be a sort-of-between-the-finger deal - I want it to look like we took the head off a true vintage halo and put it on a modern shank. Yeah, I’m weird like that. ::)

My PSL - came back with designation of Queen. With nacre of 2.5mm, which is all I actually wanted the report for

I didn’t know what that designation meant. Found this site:

And asked Yy, who explained that
- Tennyo & Hanadama refer to akoya, enhanced pink or natural white
- Madama refers to akoya, natural grey
- Sairin refers to baby akoya, necklaces smaller than 6mm
- Saiun refers to to natural grey baby akoya, necklaces smaller than 6mm
- For GSS, Chakin is the best grade and Moon is second best
- For WSS with silver/neutral overtone, Venus is the best grade and Phoenix is second best
- For white south sea with non-silver/neutral overtone (like strong pink, or special colours) Queen is the best grade and Phoenix is second best

I asked if this was documented anywhere in Japanese, as I couldn’t find anything in English… Seems like no, not really, it’s just ubiquitous tribal knowledge in the Japan pearl industry

Long live the Queen ;D.

What a gorgeous glow on that Pearl!! I absolutely adore the pictures with that violet/purpleish glow off that pink pearl!

Well, Queen is a fitting description. She's gorgeous and I can't wait to see this ring!

Crazy beautiful pearls! Looking forward to the reveal of your white peachy WSS ring!

I found the classifications interesting . Most I've never heard of though Lagoon for Tahitians is one with which I am familiar... just lately I've run across Queen for Tahitian as well. The Akoya grades are pretty well known but the WSS and Tahitian certainly don't come up very often. I've asked in the past but many Farms and Wholesalers seem to 'pooh pooh' the idea of certificates feeling many are just a sales gimmick . Perhaps it's worth it if you tend to sell off and trade up pearls as it might help with resale ?

Kinda sounded to me like PSL has a bit of a rep for creating fancy new names whenever they feel like it… Like, not exactly something the East Asia market takes seriously…

Agree! and quite random too hahahh. Let’see:
In top range akoya after ten-nyo they have hanadama, madama. Flower series, I got it, but then they threw in Akoya Gold and Akoya Queen. Why not call it with Marigold for gold color?
Then in top range South Sea we have Venus for white silver, borealis queen for non white/silver/gold. Celestial, Ok, I got it But then they threw in Chakin (something like tea towel??) for gold system. Why not calling it sunny, taiyo, soleil …
Top range tahitian we get lagoon, platinum black, sunset black, black butterfly queen.
There’s randomness in every quality band special appellations, make it even harder to remember
Queen is the only one that used consistently accros various type for multicolour or other colours not having special appellations within each category.

Ooh. Thank you for the translations!

… And. Tea towel? :lol-2:

I’m dying  suffice to say they should hire you to come up with some alternate nomenclature, I much prefer marigold!!

Took these today and thought I’d share here too - overtone and body colour differences in akoya.

Both of these are gem quality and pinked. The one that looks “cooler” has much stronger pink overtone and very little green. The one that looks creamier has more balance of pink and green in its overtone, to my eyes.

I’m Indian, my skin leans olive, and I can wear either colour fine. I think both flavours look nice on me. I like both for different reasons and I alternate probably 50/50. On white skin with pink undertones, though, we both agreed the pearl with less green is more flattering.
