What color metal for yellowish/brownish/orange sapphire?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering what you thought would be the best color gold to set this stone in. It is a 6.2mm round yellowish/brownish/orange (dominantly yellow) sapphire. I plan on having it bezel set in a simple ring (for a woman) and was wondering your thoughts on the best color combination. I think I would prefer white gold...but do you think that it would just look unappealing? It has pretty brilliant yellow/orange flashes.

It doesn't really look yellowish/brownish/orange, but I'll take your word for it. I would probably use a butter alloy of 18K yellow gold to play down the brown, and play up the orange/yellow. I think white gold would play up the brown, unless that's what you want.

OK, thanks for your input...and I have no experience judging gemstone color but what color would you call it?

Well on my monitor, dare I say it . . . . grey

Yes...I can see how you would get grey. I don't think it's necessarily free from grey, but I think the grey background (which is white in real life) is partly responsible. It is overall pretty light colored. Here is a side view to get a better feeling for the color, although the saturation looks lighter when looking topview.

Definitely yellow gold if you want to play up the yellow/orange portion.
