Which colored stones flouresce?

I believe I read that Burma rubies and Danburinte flouresce. I did a Google and PS search and did not find much on this. Anyone know anything more?

Thanks.

Good question, sonoma. Here is a site aimed more at mineral collectors, but it shows examples of fluorescent specimens of gems like ruby, zircon, opal, and a bunch of others: Fluorescent minerals gallery. Check your spelling of fluorescent in the searches, too-I noticed you switched the o and the u in the title of the thread.

Great website Selkie. Thank you for posting it.

Hi sonomacounty,

I just bought a blacklight flashlight and have been having fun checking flourescence in my stones. The stones that flouresce in my collection [outside of some of my diamonds] are my rubies, pink sapphires and my color-change sapphire. My regular blue sapphires do not flouresce.

Thanks all. You know, I always forget how to spell flouro----, well, however you spell that.

How cool. Where did you find that? I have a blacklight bulb but it requires me to go get a small lamp and switch bulbs. Not the worst thing, but. And thanks for looking at your stones. That sounds like it was sort of fun.

And, great website, thanks.

It was a lot of fun but it can be kind of freaky too, when you look in a mirror to find out that only one of your diamond studs has strong blue flourescence! I ordered the flashlight from Amazon. I just searched under blacklight flashlight.

Here''s an example (poor indirect sun pic, however) of a small parcel of unheated sapphires from Sri Lanka, which shows that you will find it difficult to predict how a stone will fluoresce based on its color...

Great picture, Gary. Love it.

Yes, cool picture. Thanks.

I thought I read somewhere that blue sapphires don''t flouresce. Goes to show you. If a blue stone flouresces red, does that give it a purple sort of hue (blue plus red)?

"If a blue stone flouresces red, does that give it a purple sort of hue (blue plus red)?"...possibly - it might in direct sun if very strong fluor - it would be a stone-by-stone determination.
