Hi everyone. I am in a world of inner turmoil deciding on the right colour metal for an emerald ring. I've of course seen a lot of emeralds set with white and yellow metals, but what about rose? I haven't even started to think about the karat of the golds yet!

Please excuse the $10 cheapie ring, it's just to use as a colour reference as I don't have the stone with me. At the top is a rose gold bangle, the ring is in white metal and the bottom of course is yellow.

I feel like the rose matches my skin tone better and is nice and subtle, but the yellow does pop more. But maybe the white helps the green stand out?! I don't know. Please help!! I would just be looking to do a plain band solitaire setting, no side diamonds.

Thanks! All opinions welcome :)

Platinum ring; yellow-gold prongs/gallery/collet

Interesting! Do you mean a mixed metal ring? Do you happen to have any example pictures? I have seen yellow bands with white prongs/basket, but not the other way around!

If your skin tone looks best with rose gold, then get rose gold. I think any color would work with an emerald. Just take a look at @TheGarnetGirl 's rings in rose gold! She has one with pink Mahenge spinel sides done in rose gold, and the color combination is simply to die for. :lickout:

Spouse's has a frilly/perforated but very low gold collet (not like the modern bezel on this example) and the ring and and diamond halo are platinum. There are many examples with yellow-gold prongs and Pt bands. All the Edwardian and Deco stuff is all Pt, though, and that's a little "cool" for me. (Perfect for sapphire, though, imo.)

I have read through TheGarnetGirl's thread on choosing the metal for her "Ivy" ring more times than is healthy! I've followed pretty much the same thought patterns about yellow and white metals and whether rose is too trendy. I never saw the finished ring though. That thread has no closure!! :P

Also I question my own taste and thought I would revert to the experts. And seeing as I'm going for a plain band (no bezel), and less visible metal than TheGarnetGirl, I wasn't sure how much difference it would make. I *think* I'm leaning towards yellow gold, but I'm not sure!

LilAlex, oh wow what a ring! That bezel is just beautiful. I went back and forth on a bezel many times too and have only just decided against it because I think the cost of someone talented enough to do one might be too prohibitive.

I like emeralds set in WG, because I think they pop beautifully in white, but I think you should get whatever color metal looks good on your skin. I do like the mixed metal idea a lot.

I think it depends on the setting. If there's going to be side diamonds etc. But again there's no right or wrong. Each colored gold will have its own personality, just depends what you prefer.

Do you predominately wear one colour metal? I think emeralds take on different hues depending on the metal, and is one stone that does look good in any metal. My personal preference is white metals, it’s really down to what you like.

Although I only wear white metals, I may consider using yellow gold for the bezel setting around an Emerald.

DK :))

If there are diamonds I like plat. If it is only the stone then 18Kt yellow gold.

18k Yellow gold prongs/bezel and balance platinum.

White metal.. this is one of my favourite PS rings

I don't recall which thread on PS I borrowed this from (a thousand apologies) but I found this super useful for myself when deciding between platinum and yellow gold for an emerald:

To me, yellow gold seems to make emeralds pop a bit more (even if just claws/bezel) when compared to platinum or white gold.

We just need a third photo of this emerald with rose gold now for the complete comparison set :lol-2:

I used to set my emeralds in Plat or white gold, however lately I have been finding that rose gold is extremely attractive and a pretty unique choice. It looks really nice with somewhat bluish glowy material. Yellow is the traditional choice mixed or not with some white. I personally do not wear emeralds in yellow gold but it does look great though. I do vote a yellowish rose like peach gold. This is my preference lately. Much depends on the exact color nuances of your emerald. My favorite stone besides diamonds :kiss2:

I like the look of all of them! I predominantly wear white simply because silver is the most affordable metal, and my wedding set is platinum, so I almost feel obligated to get something different for a RHR. I don't any yellow/rose rings so it might be time!! :)

That is so unusual, I love it!! I thought the idea of the mixed metal sounded a bit strange, but seeing it, it looks awesome.

I know where that comes from. It's from @TheGarnetGirl 's thread that I religiously stalked trying to make the same decision :)

At the moment I'm leaning towards yellow because I impulsively bought mint green and pink tourmalines over the weekend which I hope to set in rose gold someday.

@emeraldhummingbird

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any photos of your emerald? I think you'd get
a much better evaluation when it comes to choosing the metal color if you posted
a few snaps of the actual stone you're going to be setting.

There are many different tones and saturations of green that will change
whether one would think platinum or yellow gold would work.

You didn't miss it. I don't have my stone to hand so haven't been able to post photos. You are right that the shade of green will have different nuances that may go better with one metal colour or another so I may have to hold judgement and try to hold the actual stone up against various metals to know for sure :)

Do you have any listing photos?
Any photos would help really!

This is interesting to me, as I'm currently getting an emerald ring reshanked. I've opted for 18k rose gold because I think it brings out the emerald color beautifully. I don't think of rose gold as trendy, if you like it, wear it!
