Now I know nothing about apatites except that they come in many colours and that they have a hardness of only 5.

However I came across this one in a store in Singapore and I couldn’t help myself. I’d love to hear what you think:) suggestions on how to set it would be fantastic! Considering softness I’m thinking a pendant.

Shoutout to BlingObsession who recommended Kris at Jewellery point!

Sorry I am no help but how is the gem situation in Singapore?

We might be going for a holiday there next year (if I can book a 2 bedroom apartment) and I sooo badly want to know if there are lovely gems to oogle at!

Well there are a couple of amazing but very high end outlets for great gems- madly gems and heritage gems. Great stuff but by appointment only.

Otherwise I actually haven’t seen much myself because I always just buy online! This apatite is the only one I bought within singapore. For relatively lower cost gems there is a shop you can check out named shaliha gems at Victoria street. I’ve seen them at gem shows and though it’s a bit of a hunt, you can sometimes get great stuff

Depends on the price. It's a lovely colour but soft. You will end up spending more on the setting. Similar coloured tourmalines would be hardier.

Check out Bangkok, if you want to get more coloured stones. I don't really find good buys in Singapore. Maybe only during the occasional closing down sale I stumble across by chance.

That reminds me. I have to chase the bench I used in Singapore for my half eternity sapphire ring when I'm next back!

What is your opinion on Poh Heng? Do they sell any gems?

Many years ago I bought lots of gold bangles from them that I really love. Never did look to see if they sold gems though!

I bought these 2 amethyst and tourmaline rings at one of these closing down sales maybe 5-6 years ago. 18k gold with diamonds. Around s$500-600 each and I got free sizing up thrown in. This was before I knew much about CS. They are certainly worth at least that for the settings alone today and I plan to switch out the amethyst when I come across something suitable.20171104_215057.jpg

It's like the Chow Tai Fook equivalent in Hong Kong. Reliable old name, mostly gold jewellery (my mum has some very nice pieces). CS not much because the local market is still very much diamonds and gold.

Most of the SAs at the Sg stores don't even know much about the SSP or CS they sell. Majority are treated. Far East Plaza has a number of stores selling jade and CS including a couple opened by Burmese, I think. Larry's is expensive but has nice stuff. I've not been to the jadeite stores found by Bluegemz at Chinatown but I plan to check them out when I'm back for a longer spell for work.

It is gorgeous . But I don't think they are very hardy, I believe a lot of jewlers refuse to set them. Still that colour is incredible :D. If I set it, I would probably just spend an inordinate amount of time staring at it -- so it is probably for the best!

I dont think singapore is the place for buying gems. Pearls and jade on the other hand are a totally different kettle of fish.

It’s the perfect color. I’m sure you can find a jeweler to set it in a pendant for you. There is a jeweler near me who sets sphene. The only issue is that you won’t be able to stare at it while you are wearing it. It’s gorgeous, by the way!

There is a small window. I would pass since I am picky on the cut of the stone. I only accept small window for expensive stones.

I got this from a jeweller who will set it and is quite used to setting them :) . It was very very inexpensive !! I just loved the colour and couldn’t get it off my mind.

I’m planning a simple pendant like below but simple 4 prong setting as anything else is not recommended for apatite. Like you said- only problem is not being able to stare at it!! This is genuinely the only thing I’ve seen in sg that’s been low in price. I’ve even asked the jeweller to inform me if he gets any more of them.

I’m picky too but quite the opposite in this matter. I wouldn’t accept a window for expensive stones but in this I took it for the colour. The window is super small and can be closed with a pendant setting and this was really quite a steal.

Definitely a pendant, as they are soft brittle stones. That color would look fantastic in rose gold.

Thank you chatoyancy :D and gemobsessed -- the pendant idea made me smile. I have always liked the apatite frog earings below. I could see something like this as a fabulous pendant and I think Kris will do a great job. Lol this is making me want apatite earings now, but will have to be strong as I know I am too much of a klutz and drop everything....

This is lovely ! Thank you so much for sharing :)

Have you worked with Kris as well ?

Apatite earrings would be perfect

Yes, he made me some gorgeous earings. The pave was not cheap though (I really can't remember the exact dollar amount, but he built each little basket individually for me so I think it was a very reasonable/good price for the work.). I have another project at the moment, but when I go ahead the pave will cost more than a new stone and I can already see something I would really like to buy. So I am hesitating. I will see if I can find some photos on my computer.

Next cab off the rank, I would like something similar to Sparkliesluver's parabia ring, but I haven't settled yet and am prevaricating about it. It may take a while.

Lovely earrings! He did a great job :)
Those are tanzanites or sapphires ?

Love the inspiration idea of sparklesluver’s ring. It’s just too perfect. Your stones look great for that sort of double halo.

Is this a ruby or spinel? The colour is gorgeous.

Hey Gemobsessed - so glad you are happy with my recommendation. He's just the best. If you bought the Apatite off him - he'll do a great job of setting it for you I'm sure. That pendant setting you have selected is gorgeous - it's going to be a stunner.

Looking forward to seeing pictures.

Thank you! He really is great from what I can tell but could you share the work he did for u? He asked me to ask you because he doesn’t keep any pictures. I gave him your reference and he remembers you well :)

I replied on your other post - let me know roughly what you are looking for and I'll see if I can snap some pics of the work he has done for me.

Thank you, he really did do a wonderful job. They're actually colour change sapphires -- the reason Dalcier's thread tugged on my heart strings, as it isn't easy to guess how sapphiires are going to shift, and the colour change really just seems to add extra complications (as you get mixtures in a lot of lighting situations). So it is a hard stone to try to start out with as a first purchse.

pswg07 it's a spinel :D.
