i read a sapphire description that stated
" rectangular, cushion, mixed cut (with flower" pavilion)"

and " The brilliance that the flower cut delivers is simply the most exciting and maximized opposed to other cuts."

What exactly is a flower pavilion?
Does anyone have gemstones with a flower pavilion that they could post here?

I could be wrong, but I think it''s another way of saying Portuguese cut?

Agreed. First thing I thought was a Portuguese cut.

That sounds like marketing hype. Kind of like saying that a particular bottle of wine has a "bouquet" of cherries or apricot. Having a story that people can repeat to each other beats the heck out of some technical jargon and a "flower" pavilion, while meaningless, sure does sound nice. I like the sound of it myself, I may even use this one myself ! I wish they would be more specific...what kind of flower ? Where did you see that description ? Didn''t they have a picture ? The suspense may keep me awake all night now !

could be a flower design or look with the facets in the pavilion..i know gsellis cuts shamrocks, cats, and other designs in the pavilion with the facets..maybe just a design looking like a flower when viwed down into the stone..

My guess is a Portuguese cut because it is a busier pavilion which looks similar to a flower opening up.

Hi Mark,
Actually there is a usage for the term "flower style faceting". In some of the off-shore cutting centers like Jaipur, Sao Paolo, China, Sri Lanka and even in Bangkok, the term is used to describe the effect of the pavilion.

It should, from the top view of the gem, exhibit a flower-like appearance looking through the stone. Shown below is a rendering of one of the types used.

This one incorporates 16 break facets around the perimeter, with 8 main facets which complete the appearance. This rendering depicts a modern version that was constructed via GemCad software. The type constructed using remedial style jamb-peg machines are not so precise and the sides are rounded, as compared to the faceted look to the girdle on this one.

I hope you find this a little bit helpful.
