Okay, so I am invited to an engagement party for a friend, and the dress code says "shabby chic" so I''m considering wearing overalls and stilettos because I''m a brat... not really, but seriously, what the heck do I wear for this?! And what should my DH wear?

I would think something along the lines of Anthropologie. Mens, I''d say a button down & jeans.

That''s an odd dress code...I guess boho-ish?

Ditto Anthro.

Anthropologie and freepeople epitomize this look, but I never knew it to be used as a "dress code". Good luck!

Shabby Chic as a dress code? Think Carrie in S&TC. Fabu second-hand finds, Vintage with a twist. Comfortable, feminine and low cost.

Can I just say though if I hear the phrase "shabby chic" one more time I''m gonna scream? That has been around since the 90''s, and the company is actually out of business now. It''s been so overdone.

I''m with winks. And I have to say, given that this is pretty much the polar opposite of my personal style, I''d actually kind of be offended by a dress code like this. I say you should wear whatever you are comfortable with and that fits your style - if that happens to be a killer vintagey dress from Anthropologie or a thrift shop, great. If a classic black sheath or dark jeans and killer heels is more your thing, I''d stick with that - just ''cause someone is having a themed party doesn''t give them the right to dictate how everyone at the party dresses - the duty of a host/hostess is to help guests feel comfortable, and that includes (within reason, obviously) accommodating personal style, IMO.

I thought of inspiration for you while watching Bob Saget get roasted. The Olson twins!! They epitomize shabby chic, yeah? They''re the richest homeless-looking kids I''ve ever seen.

I probably shouldn''t post threads then go out of town without a computer for the entire weekend--I''m all behind on my PSing!

I''m thinking the shabby chic wording may have just been their way of saying the party is really casual. My friend told me the invitation wording ahead of time, but when I got the invite, I also found out that it''s a pool party, so my overalls and stilettos idea is out, haha! I think I would''ve rather worn that than have to wear a swimsuit in front of the masses!

Holy moly, tlh! You were having some fun internet shopping! Thanks for all the cute ideas--I think I may have to start letting all of you lovely ladies dress me for every occasion! Thanks again for all the suggestions--I appreciate it!
