Hello,
I am sure we have all heard this before, and this topic may be out there among all of the older posts. But, I am new here and thought I would post.
I have an engagement ring that I bought for my ex last year. It is a platnum band with three perfect diamonds on it. I paid around $12K for it and it appraised for $15K. What is the best thing to do with the ring? I would like to look into having it melted down and re-create another peice, using the metal and the stones.
Who do I contact to do this? A local jewler? Or, is there a better avenue?

Thank you for your replies!

Reusing the stones would give you the best value because trying to resell it would net you probably 50% to 60% of what you paid. The metal probably cannot be melted and reused to to possible contamination issues (alloy mix) but you should get perhaps $100 to $200 scrap value for it. Another alternative is to save the setting for a coloured gemstone. For resale, selling it on your own would give you the best price. Most jewellers will consign it for you but charge a % as commission.
