when do you pick BM dresses?

My wedding is not for another 16 months (November 2007), but already my FMIL, mother and some of my BM''s want to know what to do for dresses. I''m having them wear a black knee length cocktail dress of their choosing, and I''m going to email them saying this and also suggesting different stores/websites where they can find these dresses. When should I actually do this? I''m thinking it''s too soon now, although the best time to look may be fall and winter??

Are they going to match your dress? My wife''s BMs didn''t so it wouldn''t matter if the dress had been chosen or not yet. I think the key is if you change your mind often or not and if you''ve got a theme color yet. If you don''t change your mind a lot and you know what you want, just get it now. The more time they have to get it, the better. Leaves more time for last minute changes if necessary.

Even if another season is better, letting them know lets them plan better.

I would wait until you pick your dress first... but then, if you know what you want already you can just tell them... just remember you might change your mind.

I know that I'm going to be doing black cocktail dresses of their choice, I'm only going to chose a basic black heel for them to have uniformity in the feet (I'm weird about little things, haha). I know that I won't be changing my mind, alot of that reason is I'm moving halfway across the country next month and don't really have that desire for them to look the same, especially when I think that black cocktail dresses would look great.

The wedding itself is not for 16 months, and I dont want to look psycho or wedding-obsessed giving them ideas or examples for where to shop and for dresses so far in advance, although fall and winter tend to be the best times to buy cocktail dresses and I'd like to make sure they weren't under any sort of stress to find a dress. I really want them to pick dresses they love.
