So an acquaintance got engaged recently and it reminded me how, despite loving jewelry and wanting to see everyones rings in real life I feel so awkward gawking straight at someones hand. It feels so.... Judgy(even if all you say "it's gorgeous!"! What in the world are you supposed to do in these situations, especially when you don't know the girl that well? Everyone seems so.. Grabby!

I'm have felt this way before being a liw, but it also doesn't help!

I totally get what you mean. AND to make matters worse I have the worst poker-face, ever. Love or hate it's so obvious. I just found this out, too, when I was eating some crappy baked ziti.

I totally feel like a creeper staring at ladies' hands. : )

I've noticed, even if its just totally admiring another's ring-- even if they're already married, you could casually glance down and say "Wow, he's got good taste!"
Then, she'll either say that she had say or didn't, how he proposed, etc. Even non-diamond-obsessed women are mostly happy to talk about a gift from their beloved.

Usually when one of my friends has gotten engaged (whether we were close or not), the girl has always been very willing and excited to show everyone her ring. It hasn't really been awkward because the girl is ecstatic to show off her ring. Now, I've never really "gawked" or looked very closely at anyone's ring (even if I really really wanted to! ;) ) but to me, you shouldn't feel awkward looking. I mean, it's pretty much been accepted to society that most women receive a ring when they get engaged so it feels natural to me to look at the ring.

If a bride-to-be waves her left hand under my nose, I will gawk shamelessly. If the groom-to-be is present, I compliment his good taste. But if she doesn't show me the ring, I try not to be obvious in checking it out. :)

HI:

Treat someone as you wish to be treated. Gracious is always good!

cheers--Sharon
