Ok... here it is. I have about a year to really plan things out, and save up my money. I have saved up about half of what I want to spend this month, and I think I could save the other have in the next 1-2, no problem, but the real question is, how much do I buy, and when should I buy it?

I think I have a good Center Stone picked out, and I know the band I want.

I still have to do research about getting it in platinum (900), independent appraisals, setting costs, and insurance, but for the most part I know.

So, should I buy the ring in pieces and hang on to them till I have them all, and am ready to assemble the ring? Or should I save the money up, hope that the diamonds I am looking at dont get sold, and buy them all at once to get a finished product as soon as possible?

All suggestions are welcome!

Well, it will make your life easier to buy the stones and have them set at the same time. But if you found a stone now and wanted to wait a few months to have it set, I suppose you could do that as well. You''d just have to be sure you could insure a loose stone for awhile. My vendor held my stone for me for a couple of months after we bought it while I looked for settings. That''s a good option because we didn''t have to worry about insuring it until I found a setting.

if you are getting a round or princess (whose variations are relatively limited) you can always afford to let it go and when you''re ready to purchase you can find something similar.

BUT if you''re going for something like a cushion where there is alot of variance and in some ways no two are the same.. i''d say if you see a stone you like for a decent price -- buy it, it won''t be so easy to find one like it later.
