Where do I go from here?

I purchased this ring setting off of eBay (I know.. risky... but I figured it was a great deal and I have 14 days to return it if the specs doesn't come out as listed once I verify with a jeweler).

Question: Where do I go from here?

Should I;

1) go to a local jeweler, verify specs, buy a loose diamond and have them set it?

or 2) go to a jeweler, get it appraised and insured. Then buy a loose diamond online? But who to set it? Insurance wise?

I am a bit intimidated going to a local jeweler as I don't want to get pressured in to buying a diamond. My budget is $5,000 for a fiery, round diamond and I am not sure I will find that locally.

Thank you in advance for your input!

Hi Grace and welcome!

I have a quick question please, I take it you bought the setting minus the centre and side stones, is the setting empty now and ready for resetting or does it have any diamonds left in it?

Thank you for the warm welcome :)

The center stone is a CZ. The side diamonds according to the seller totals about .36pts and are G color, VS1.

Hi Grace!

Thanks for the additional info! I think there are a couple of ways you could approach this. You could find a jeweller that would inspect the ring to make sure the setting is in good condition and suitable to take another stone, plus verify the side stones are as stated. Just say at this time you have no idea what you want to do with it but you just want to make sure the side stones are at least within the colour and clarity grades you were told at the time of sale to avoid any hard sell of their stones. You might find they grade a bit differently according to the skill of the jeweller appraising the ring and their own opinion but I would think within a couple of grades either way should be a reasonable result, unless you are absolutely set on the side diamonds graded as sold. The jeweller might only be able to get an estimate on weight of the side stones, colour and clarity grades unless they are removed from the ring, otherwise any opinion would be given ' as mounting permits'. If the side stones were removed from the ring for appraising it is possible this might void any return policy you have so make absolutely sure before you allow anything to be done to the ring that could do that.

Should you get a positive opinion on the structural condition of the ring and the side stones, you could approach one of the vendors if you find a diamond you like and ask if you sent the ring to them, if they would set the stone for you. Some might not and even if they did agree to it, should the ring break whilst setting, they might not make you whole, so you would need to check very carefully. Also you would need to check what size diamond the setting would take, if you wanted to go larger it's possible the head might not accommodate it so you would need to make sure and check the diameter of the simulant and aim to work within that size or get your jeweller to give you a diameter range that would be suitable. Carat weight doesn't always equal face up size or diameter so just something to bear in mind.

It will hopefully be much easier than I am making it sound but I am a cautious soul and I like to bring up both pro's and cons as if I were the one doing the project. Some of the above might not be applicable in reality but I do like to throw these things out there, one of the experts might have more accurate advice for you, I see a couple are on the boards...!

How big is the cz?

OMG!!! I think this is my old setting, that I bought from a PSer! I was watching this EBAY auction because I sold it to that ebayer in November! If it ended a few days ago and you paid in the 400ish range, then it is the same one! And you scored a great deal because all the specs are correct (it originally came with an appraisal) and was sold to me as Whiteflash setting ,but the hallmark was erased when it was sized! I paid double for it and wore it a few wekks. If so, it holds a .80 or so diamond ring.
I would buy a diamond online and insure it, and then set it with a local jeweler. As long as as it's insured, most local jewelers charge about $100 dollars to set.

LOL. Yes... That was/is me :). I saw rhe ring and knew it was a good deal. I have been looking to replace my previously pawned e-ring for quite some time now. 11th yr anniversary this year and I finally decided to pull the trigger. My husband prefers I get a bigger diamond ring but I told him that just isnt me -and not practical for every day wear with my line of work. Your setting is perfect -simplistic yet gorgeous. Thank you for telling me about the specs and WhiteFlash. I thought it looked extremely similar to their stock photo ;)
