White and yellow metals....

I’m fascinated with the choices of white metals and yellow gold for both diamonds and cs and how they come together to create very unique looks. As I’ve started my journey here, getting cs gems and diamonds is almost the easier part. I’m finding I’m torn between white and yellow settings as I make plans for them.

How do you decide which metal you want to use for a project? Do you go with what’s typical (white for sapphires, yellow for emeralds, etc)? Or is your skin tone your deciding factor?

Or are trends what guide you? It seems there’s a shift heading back to yellow gold these days. Am I imagining it?

=)2

I just like the metallic look of platinum.

Originally, all my jewellery was yellow gold, but I’ve been gradually changing it to platinum and white gold.

White metal looks terrible with my skin tone. Everything I have is beautiful butter yellow gold.

Pictures are always handy. :P2

I wonder if these wedding bands represent trends......
Grandmother’s ring. 1930. White gold.
Mother’s ring. 1950s. Yellow gold.
My ring. 1990s. Yellow gold.
Daughter’s ring (not pictured). White gold.

I love platinum! Do you feel white metals look better on you or do you feel white metal is more modern/current? Or maybe just wanted a change?

You are so lucky to have one that looks best on you! I feel I can go either way and it just makes decisions harder.

Any colour metal suits my skin tone, I just prefer platinum, I think it’s pretty timeless.

A couple of inspiration pics. :))

A little bit of everything! =)2 Very pretty! I think this might be the way I need to go.... choose depending on my mood. That means more buying opportunities to make sure I have it all covered. :lol-2:

yellow gold looks awful on me. So I just always choose white gold.

I've committed, more or less, to keeping my every day jewelry a mix of rose gold and white or platinum. I have pieces that are special to me in both tones, and I think they look nice together.

I do have a few yellow gold pieces, and there are some I want that I know would look best in yellow, but I don't like mixing the 3 together so they just don't/won't get worn as often.

I don't really think one color suits me more or less so that isn't a deciding factor.

I used to wear only 18ct yellow gold. Everything I owned, including pieces from my ex, were yellow 18ct. A few weeks after I met my husband, he bought me a solitaire pendant in platinum, I "think" to distance from my ex's stuff. I then had to go out & have my studs reset into platinum to match. He proposed with a platinum ring, so my wedding & eternity rings are platinum. He has bought me 2 Tiffany DBTY bracelets over the years, both platinum. I love platinum, BUT...... My skin sort of likes rich yellow gold! It likes platinum too, but I have a golden tone to my skin, which sounds really weird, but I have mixed heritage including Egyptian, so my skin is a deep sand colour. I often wear my grandmothers 18ct & platinum engagement ring & for our 10th wedding anniversary last year, I began my RH celebration stack with a plain 1.75mm 18ct Tiffany Lucida wedding band. So I am daily adorned with platinum set studs, pendant & wedding set, with granny's ring & the gold Lucida on my RH. It used to offend my OCD to mix metals, but as I've aged & thought what the hell, life is short! I like it!

Your transformation happened quickly. I bet that was new and exciting. =)2

Yellow gold definitely has been coming back for a couple of years. I will say that I look better in white metals, but I was married during a strong yellow gold time! For an anniversary about 10 years ago, I got new diamond rings and went with platinum. I have a few special pieces in yellow gold, and I mix them with my platinum. I feel that platinum is a neutral, so I can wear anything with it. I did just make a ring that is both platinum and yellow gold, though! Unfortunately, I really can't wear rose gold because my skin tone is so pink that it blends in.

I would get the metal that is most flattering on you.

YG always looks brassy on my skin, so I’ve always leaned toward white metals. Since joining PS, I discovered unplated WG (non-palladium alloyed), and it’s become my favorite metal for the ‘whellow’ look it has. It’s not stark white and not brassy ... just a lovely ‘warm white’ that I feel looks best with my skin tone.

i have a skin tone that is more complimented by yellow gold so that's mostly what i wear. i have a few rose gold pieces too. i have a purple sapphire i picked off loupe troop a few weeks ago and am wondering what to set it in. i'll probably post in the CS forum when its time to set it (won't be for a while, broke af lol). there is definitely a shift back to yellow gold though! i am loving all the yellow gold sets i see. very inspiring for someone who's never worn white metals lol.

I used to think yellow gold was "old" and all my pieces were white gold. Then I started seeing some gorgeous buttery yellow gold pieces and realized how beautiful they are! So I recently added an opal 5 stone ring in yellow gold and have a Victorian bangle on it's way to me. Thinking about setting an emerald in yellow or rose gold too.

I'm totally OCD and used to think mixing metals was a no no but I'm super excited to wear all the pieces together! :mrgreen2:

My e-ring and wedding band are both platinum, but I wear a YG signet ring on my right hand almost everyday (I also have a sterling signet ring when I want all white metal.)
I have a variety of skinny bands I throw in the mix w/ my e-ring & wedding band (or sometimes just with my wedding band) and I don't discriminate- WG, YG, rose gold, platinum. I have one band that is white gold on top w/ a cool cut out yellow gold base that I am wearing all of the time now- tough to tell in this pic, but the inside/profile of this ring, w/ the arches cut out is YG while the top is WG.

I wear all metals and love mixing them up:Up_to_something2:fortunately no issues with different metal tones and colors with my skin tone. I sometimes chose metal color based on stone being set. Just depends.
My ering 18k rose gold and I wear 14k yellow gold eternity band with it. Right hand mostly wear 14k wg plain band with 18k yg 5 stone. Platinum stud earrings.:oops2:

Today’s Rose gold is a bit more coppery than that of the 1880s. It doesn’t look good on my skin tone. I prefer white gold. Sometimes the stone I’m setting demands yellow gold and I go with that. The spessertite in my Avatar is set in yellow gold.

I have always mixed metals, I prefer yellow to white. My things are 70% yellow, 20% white and 10% rose gold.

This is a personal taste, in my opinion. Personally my preference is platinum. However, I have had a few yellow gold pieces made this year. It's nice to add a bit of yellow to the mix!

I love hearing that some mix metals. :P2 I was hoping I’d gravitate more towards one metal over another but I find myself in the middle. One of each please! :lol-2:

I’m glad to hear yellow gold is making a bit of a comeback. I’ve always been enamoured with its richness.

Thanks for all the replies!

I can go both with my skin tone. I tend to have my CS set in gold. But I also like the yellow gold and diamond look for a clean/ more modern design, I think it softens the look and adds a romantic touch.
