I''m debating on getting this stone set at some point in the future. Not sure if it should be white or yellow. It''s 6 carats and a 10 x 11mm cushion. Guess the stone! It changes color from violet to purple in different light sources.

Do you wear one color over the other? I have seen both blue and purple stones look good with white and yellow gold. I tend to like white better, and since the stone is a little lighter in tone, you might have to worry about yellow gold prongs causing an effect on the color. You you have a piticular setting picked out?

ETA: Is it a spinal?

I love both white gold and yellow gold. I tend to just get the color of gold that will best compliment the stone's color.

I actually saw this same color stone in yellow gold today on one of the shopping networks. While white gold was my first choice, I loved how it looked in yellow as well.

I was thinking of an LOGR setting - he has many to fit a cushion stone, but we'll see.

Not a spinel.

I would say white gold for it, but I tend to almost always favor white gold on cooler toned stones and yellow for warmer tones.

My guess would be a spinel too.

Here it is sitting in my yellow gold LOGR mount that I had made for another stone. I just placed it in there to see how it would look in yellow gold, it's obviously way too big. I have absolutely no eye for putting colors together, so let me know what you think. Notice it's more purple in this picture, but it's violet in the other one. It is purple in sunlight, and violet in incandescent light.

Hmmm... now seeing it looking more purple like that, it looks really nice with the yellow gold. I guess it''s a toss up for me since it changes depending on the light. Can you post a picture of what it looks like in that yellow gold setting when it looks more violet?

I think it would look lovely in either but I would go with yellow gold. I was just messing around yesterday with colors close to this and a lavendar and they did look good in yellow gold. The stone is lovely.

I think it looks great in yellow! I really want to get one of those LOGR settings in yellow gold someday too! There are so many gorgeous ones!

First off - it''s a CC sapphire, right?

When it comes to metal color, I''d say play it safe and go with white. If it were a deep purple stone that doesen''t change color I''d go the other way, but with light tones yellow might be too much. Besides, I''m not sure how would it affect the blue (you call it violet) color; it might turn it greenish.

P. S. I think rose gold might work here, regardless of color present.

Not a sapphire.

Here's a pic of it with more violet in it, and sitting in yellow. Sorry for the bad fuzzy pic, but the color is obvious.

It is so pretty! I really like it in the yellow gold! I am taking a stab at this guessing game. I would have said spinel... .but could it be a color change garnet??

It would look gorgeous in this setting!.... We could be twins!!!

It is, but I was refering to the first pic in the thread, which (on my monitor at least), looks...aquamarinish...just light blue, without any violet - that''s why I said that I''m not sure about yellow gold.

It couldn''t be iolite...?

I was thinking about that setting. Did you get yours yet? How do you like it, did you post pics of it yet? It's not a garnet.

Ma Re,
No, it's not iolite.

LOL.... I am guessing any gemstone from A-Z!

I have not yet received my setting. It has shipped out on the 16th from China.................. I am growing inpatient. I will definately take lots of pics when I receive it.... that is if it is worth taking lots of pics

CC Fluorite?

Whatever it is, it''s very pretty. I have exactly the same colour change in a sapphire and I''ve set it in yellow gold. It''s brought out the richness of the colours.

Not fluorite! Let's put it this way, the answer should be obvious!!

Well, the obvious one that no-one mentioned is chrysoberyl (alexandrite) - but of course it ain't that either.

At any rate - I vote for yellow gold, with some diamonds...

Is it a tourmaline? Personally I'd do white gold, but I like icy things more than warm things. A rich 18k yellow might be nice too.

Yep, it''s a cuprian purple tourmaline!! You don''t see those everyday, but it''s more violet than purple. There''s alot more blue in the stone than any hint of pink.

Is the copper why it undergoes such a strong shift? It''s a lovely stone. And huge.

Thanks!

I don't know, but I did ask someone that heats stones if this is the color that turns to paraiba color tourmaline, and he said it is. I'm not heating it though because I think the color is rare, and I'm a purist. There's not many of these color tourmalines left. They're only from Mozambique and they're all being heated. They're really hard to come by, it's much easier to come by pinkish purple tourmaline like this other oval 5 carat purple cuprian in my collection (oh no - another pic!!). See the difference in color between the two. It's really interesting how many colors tourmaline comes in, but I especially enjoy these rare colors.

Both have GIT memos indicating they're both purple cuprian elbaite tourmalines, but they're very different in color composition. I think the other one would actually look good in white gold. I'm still debating on the color of gold for this one though.

White gold, but that is just my opinion. Go w/ what you want :D

That is really neat, maybe one of our aspiring GG''s will chime in too. I love that blue, I wouldn''t heat it either. I know the Pariaba color is coveted, but I just love rich blues. Hold on to it, maybe some day you can loan it to a museum as an example of what tourmalines are supposed to look like!

Ditto that. But I look weird in yellow gold, so that probably has a lot to do with it!

Thanks, when I got this, I was not only enthralled by the color, but the fact it changes colors!! There was no mention of the color change in the listing. It''s not the most gorgeous stone on earth, but I think it''s interesting and rare. Look how long it took everyone to even guess that it was a tourmaline, and that''s usually everyone''s first guess on an unknown colored stone! I was really amused by that, and happy as well.

There''s some interesting and beautiful purple tourmalines on this page.

http://www.atggems.com/Photos_Tourmaline-Mozambique.htm

There''s one stone, albeit much more included than mine, that is the same color, and they note the color change (like a sapphire). Here is the note for it:

B - 12.06ct Tanzanite Colored Oval Mozambique Tourmaline, has the look of a color change sapphire - sort of blue but also purple depending on lights (yahya-06a-04a)

I never knew that color change tourmaline existed, but I guess it does.

LOL! .. .um... duh! Why didn''t I think of that?? What a beautiful and what appears to be a rare gem TL!!!
