Who wants to see my haul from today?

Really pretty pattern!! And btw when do we see your bday ring? You teased us with the side view only ;-)

Thanks! Soon….my birthday is Feb 17th :Up_to_something:

I didn't buy this but came across it in the consignment shop this past Saturday. It is a very old pressure canner/cooker. (I can't get over the wooden handles!) This was the stuff of (kitchen explosion) nightmares of my mother's generation. It seems like I remember a story about a rice explosion.....all over the ceiling. The pressure cookers are made so much better and safer today. If you used one of these you sure were a brave soul. They could be unpredictable...and dangerous!!IMG_3979.jpg

My mother always loved her pressure cooker.
Note: it is not good for broccoli....
Anyway, I seem to remember spaghetti sauce all over the ceiling!

Once the explosion happened, there was no hiding the evidence. My supervisor said her mother still has a dark spot in the ceiling above her stove…but can’t remember what it was that exploded!

Haha! I remember mom using her pressure cooker almost every day. It was so heavy and hard to wash.
When she made broccoli, I swear the color was more gray than green...... This was back in the day when steaming delicate vegetables was unheard of!

The poor broccoli was steamed to death! LOL!!

Oh my! I think this is why I was so reluctant to use my Instapot (took me a whole year to open it) the thoughts of the old pressure cookers exploding all over!

One would defiantly want to buy a new seal before using it - i mean look whay happened to the space shuttle

We brought a new but just a regular pressure cooker a few years ago
i was scared for a long time
But so long as the seal is in perfect condition its safe and most home appliances shops can get new seals even for very old models

@Daisys and Diamonds, I’m just a big worry wart about things exploding, like I won’t let my husband get a propane grill because I’m afraid he will blow the house up

I totally get that
i refused to use the gas cook top when we bought this house and went out an bought an electric one

Yep, me too on both of these. No gas grill, no gas stove. Although I do know that cooking on a gas stove gives the cook more control. I'll give that up for not fearing my house blowing up.

@Lookinagain I am so glad we have an electric stove, although it’s a pain to cook on, at least there is no concern about pilot lights going out.

Ironically when we got ride of the gas cook top we put in a rheem hot water system that needs the bottles rather than piped in gas from the street
we had a certified plumber install everything
About a year latter and about 6 refills the delivery driver told us the plumber had forgotten to put a board behind the bottles to stop a potential leak accumulating under the house
One phone call to the plumber and he was here in 15 to fix it !

But as for gas BBQ's
Well webbers and acorns just taste so much better

Yesterday, at my local antique mall, I found this beautiful salt glazed German stein.
It dates somewhere between 1895-1914.
Notice the art nouveau design. In Germany it was known as Jugendstil.

@stracci2000, now you can feel authentic when you drink your German beer ;)

Maybe iced tea! (Not beer...I think its yukky!)
Anyway, I thought this stein was really beautiful.
I had came across this type of German pottery in the past and had done some research on it. That's how I knew what it was when I saw it.
A new addition to the hoardatorium!

@stracci2000, I’m with you about beer……not a fan :sick:

Do you have other steins? Something tells me you have a few hanging around ;)2

We only have one other stein.
DH has a German stein that belonged to his Dad, it is from the 1970s. It's one of those colorful touristy ones that are so common.

 My mom had "the bean incident"...and yes, all over the ceiling. She was twitchy about using the pressure cooker for good reason!

I love the Instant Pot!

Do you guys have tinned condenced milk ?
You can boil it up for about 4 hours and it turns to caramel
Its so delicious
But it does tend to explode and and up on the kitchen ceiling
its never happened to be because i scarafice a bit of caramel by punching a hole in the lid and watching the water level like a hawlk
Nowadays they sell it already caramelized because im thinking so many mother's banned its 'manufacture' in their kitchens

We donated an old pressure cooker much like that one just last week - although it didn’t have wood handles, or the pressure gauge, but it was in very much the same condition. It was huge - probably held 25 quarts or so. I assume it had been used for canning. “Maid of Honor” brand.

Remember the brass lamp we bought for $6.50 a month or two ago? Here it is today, finally on display now that the Christmas decorations are all packed away.

We re-wired it with a vintage-looking twisted cloth-covered cord, and added a new shade, of course. And polished, and polished, and polished! My husband, who’s really good about such things, gives it a quick polish every week or so.

(The shade cost about five times as much as the lamp by the way - LOL! But we found an absolutely lovely shade for another lamp, in perfect condition, during the same goodwill trip, so I figure that part’s a wash!)

Beautiful! I once had the same perpetual brass desk calendar, sans the marble!

I ADORE caramel pie!! You can also put the cans in a slow cooker with water and it works. But…you can leave it in too long and the caramel turns very very brown!! If done tight, it’s easy and safe!

Ive done it that way but i was still scared and punched a hole in the lid
