Why does a diamond appraise so much higher than actual cost?

Does this always happen? Is there an average amount that it goes up?

I only know the appraisal cost of my ring, not the actual cost - how can i figure it out?

Hi,
I read your other post where you said that you calculated the cost of your ring based on a PS search. Do you know where your fiance purchased your stone from? Prices can vary tremendously based on the company and knowing which one is the best starting point for figuring out how much was paid.

I think most appraisals are inflated since this gives the buyer a sense of, "I got a good deal." I''m not sure how much prices go up, but my earrings were appraised at nearly double the cost.
