Why the hand pics on SMTR

I am still relatively new here (joined on 7/12/04). Was wondering from the old timers why the hand pics are preferred?

I like hand pics because it's easier to see the size and proportions of the ring versus looking at it in a ring box or some other type of holder. And, something magical happens for me when I see that pretty thing sitting where it belongs. Lots of folks here have classic single stone rings and they all look the same to me until I see them on the finger and then the magic happens and rather than seeing a typical (for example) Tiffany style solitaire, I see a work of art given in love.

Okay, that makes sense. But as far as scale, don't rings look different on different hands e.g. size 4 versus size 7 ring?

That's why people always ask what ring size people are. Speaking for myself, I looked at other people with about the same size fingers and how their rings looked. Then I could say "hmm... that style looks very different in the pictures than on the hand" or "wow, that's a great sized stone for my hands" or so forth.

I like to see the hand pics because you can't really tell how a setting looks until it's on a finger. My setting is the WF w-prong, and it looks rather odd in pictures unless I'm wearing it because of the lines of the basket. Honestly, I didn't even like the setting until Brian "the cutter" was kind enough to send me additional photos. I never would have guessed the setting would be so simple and elegant from the standard photos!

Yep, and that's why I like hand pics. We've seen pics of .5 carat diamonds that look waaaay larger on the finger and large diamonds that look smaller on the finger. A ring by itself may not be unique, but once it's on the owner's hand, it becomes unique cause ain't nobody got a hand exactly like the owner. Keep in mind here that my overly romantic nature is tainting my responses. I'd like to hear from those with a more sound mind than mine

Jennifer, I would never have guessed a 7.5 ring size from your pictures. They look so dainty. Then again, it must be all that bling on your fingers.

Okay, my e-ring is a size 3.75 and my RH rings are size 4 (also have gained weight through the years)
