I have received a quote from the dealer on a 12.61ct Rough Winza Ruby that I’m interested in. It could be after cut & polish 5/6 ct gem, the quote was $65000 per ct (Rough wight ) I was expecting $35,000/$50,000per ct value (after cut & polish)
I don’t know much about winza ruby prices does anyone else have experience with this share your experience it’s really appreciated

Thank you

I think you have too many “000’s” in your pricing?
Have you seen and assessed the ruby yourself?
I assume you are a gem cutter and are able to assess accurately resultant weight after cutting and assess crystal dichroism (o ray preferable) and presence and impact of internal flaws? Most Winza rubies have low to moderate fluorescence under long wave, obviously strong (er) fluoresce is preferable
Rubies are valued on treatment, Size, colour (tone and hue) and origin.
My opinion is that only a very experienced gem dealer / cutter should consider purchasing uncut corundum crystals. So much of the end value depends on resultant cut size, clarity and colour grading. Get it wrong and that’s thousands of dollars lost.

Yeah that yield sounds too high. But even if you got that kind of yield , I really havent heard of faceted winza rubies selling at the per ct $$ price needed to recoup the cost of that rough. The quality of the cut ruby also seems like a big unknown at the moment, given no information about the flourescence, proportions of the rough.

Then there is all the risks assumed with cutting rough. Honestly there sounds like way too many 0's in that pricetag. I cant imagine taking that kind of investment/exposure to risk on.

When buying rough, I aways calculate the purchased based on a recovery of 25%. If it's possible to make money with 25% then it could be a good buy. With proper cutting, an experienced cutter normally does better than 25%, more like 30 to 38%. I think your thought of 50% is off base. The price is way off base. I wouldn't be too concerned with how the stone looks under UV light, most people don't live with UV lighting.... but I would think that the stone would yield about a 4 ct stone. Depending on the color and clarity, an unheated 4 ct Winza stone could yield $2000 to $18,000 per ct.

Are you being offered the stone for $65,000 per ct? That would be over $800,000 for the rough stone. Or $65,000 for the stone? Either way, I see no possible way to recover your cost of the rough.
