Woukd you wear a used wedding band?

I have been collecting all kind of "stacking" bands through the years. One of my best friends who recently got married was in love with one of my right hand rings. I would wear it once in a while, so she would always notice it and compliment me for it. She asked me if she mind if she bought the same ring as a wedding band, but I couldn't find it, and neither could she. The band was from a local jewelry story that closed two years ago. Needless to say she was devastated. Fast forward to the week of her wedding, she still didn't have a wedding band, and the one she had ordered was too small on her finger. I took my band to the jeweler to be repolished and offered it to her as a wedding gift. I know it's kind of odd, but she loved it and we both happen to have the same finger size, so I think it was a sign for her to own the ring. :)

So if someone else's previously used band makes you happy, go for it!

I've attached a picture of her wedding set for all of you to enjoy!

Thomper, that is a new twist on giving someone the shirt off your back - you're a wonderful friend (and that's a wonderful set!).

I was bad and just bought another from eBay! A Victorian rose gold band that is already my size (has marks where someone else sized it, but still pretty darn cool). I can't wait until it gets here! :))

The set is beautiful too, please tell your friend that.

This is a lovely story, Thomperchik! It is making me want to share a story of my own.

My godson just got engaged to his longtime girlfriend. He gave her an engagement ring made, in part, from diamonds that belonged to his (still living) grandmother. My mother had never had an engagement ring. In fact my mother had to be married using a borrowed wedding band! But when I was born-after Pearl Harbor had been bombed and the United States had joined World War II and my father had served overseas-my father bought my mother an eternity band. That was in 1951. It has full cut diamonds set in platinum.

I offered the ring to my godson to use as a wedding ring. He accepted it , but wanted to wait until his fiancée got her dress before he showed her the ring. Yesterday he told me that she had picked her dress (although she will not tell him anything about it), so that he showed her the wedding band and that she loves it.

I am very happy. Their wedding will be next year: 2011. The ring will then be 60 years old, an antique. My parents were happily married for over 66 years before my mother passed away. It was associated with a very happy marriage!

I will try to post pictures of the ring, although none that I have are spectacular.

This is another photo of the ring that my godson will be giving his fiancée to wear during their wedding. It is in its original box at his request. I thought it was very sweet that he preferred the original box; I offered him another, far more elegant box in case he wanted to present it to his fiancée in something new!

Thomper and AGBF - what lovely stories, thank you for sharing :))

AGBF - there's something so sweet and charming about your godson wanting to present the heirloom in the original box ::)

The original box is in great shape too! Awwwwww, its so nice to hear of someone young appreciating this.

Thank you all, and AGBF, but I think your story is absolutely special!

I hope they both get to enjoy it and she wears it in good health! Please bring pictures of their wedding, as I would love to see it in her hand. :)

I would wear a used band and wouldn't think twice about it! I love a good bargain!

I definitely would, but I'm not a believer in karma/mojo/whatever. In fact, knowing the rings had a previous "life" is sort of interesting to me. I'd always wonder a bit about its history!

Not a problem at all for me! I have an antique band as my wedding band. If the ring were newer than I currently am and had an inscription then I wouldn't mind wearing it, but I'd probably get rid of the inscription. In older bands that I collect I look for an inscription to date it and enjoy wearing rings with other peoples info in it.

I do not understand how a wedding band, or for that matter, any piece of jewelry, can thought of as used. To me used means something that goes down in value, when often a "used" piece of jewelry is worth more. Think of it this way, would it make you feel better if instead of calling it used, it was call vintage or antique. I would in a second, buy and wear used, vintage and antique jewelry. My wedding band was purchased used, online at a web site call Recycled Bride - http://www.recycledbride.com - my husband got a great deal and I love the ring.
