Hello all,

I mentioned on another thread how I noticed the only "color" I didn't have in my gem collection was brown. So in an effort to change that, I started browsing zircons, since I've always wanted to own one. But it had to be untreated, and, apparently, even the browns are often heated. In any event, I found a 6ct., 12x9mm on JTV... nice cut, no window. They call it "orange," but it's really a rich amber or warm cognac shade. The tone is medium, which I was pleased to see, because I don't care for the darker red-browns. Anyway, this untreated variety is mined in the Singida region of Tanzania. I'm not a big brown fan, but I thought it might be nice for fall. Super cheap too, as you might expect. Just an FYI if anyone is also looking to add a brown to their collection. Now don't all run out at once to grab one! :lol-2:

I must be a weirdo but I love brown gems. I think this is absolutely stunning!

Aaaactually… what do you think of instead setting it with the brighter fall colours in the yellow-orange-red range? It’s a very pretty and warm orangish-brown, and the brighter colours will emphasise it, and add an autumnal feeling to the entire piece. Coloured diamonds, on the other hand, have… well… not the prettiest and often quite dull colours, sorry. I know champagne diamonds have their loyal following, but I don’t understand it, personally. If you combine brown with other dull colours, they might take away from it instead of emphasise it.

I think it's lovely, my kid sister loves a good brown/smoky stone. She makes it a little harder though because she doesn't want any yellow, orange, or gray tones.
One day I'm going to make her another ring or maybe a necklace with some fantabulous perfectly brown gem when I find the right one!

I feel like smoky quartz might be her best bet, because it's a very neutral brown. I'm just not sure about treatments these days... they may be heated or even irradiated. You'd have to do some research, though she may not mind. It's a nice hard stone too!

I really like this idea! I'll admit I've never actually seen a brown or champagne diamond in person. They always looked interesting to me online, but if they tend to be drab, that will not do. So this will take a lot more legwork finding the right colors, sizes, and shapes, but could be worth it. Perhaps I can do red garnet, spess, and maybe yellow sapphire or diamond? A pop of green garnet might even work nicely, to represent the early fall leaves that haven't changed yet. :geek2: The other thing that makes this more difficult is the stones have to be untreated, so my selection will be limited. wah wah wahhhh

I echo @Avondale's suggestion for red or yellow side stones or melee. I personally love pink side stones with champagne diamonds but don't think this particular zircon will look best with pinks (which if I recall isn't your favorite color either :P2) . I recently let go of a champagne diamond that was very pretty and fiery, not dull at all. Was planning to set it with pinks, but I don't have unlimited budget and brown is not my favorite color anyway lol

I don't tend to wear pink clothing, but I do really love pink gems (especially yours)!! My favorite color in general is any shade of orange... pure, creamsicle, burnt, pumpkin, coral, peach, etc. I love 'em all. I'd say my next favorite color is turquoise/blue-green. Anyway! I hadn't thought of pairing brown with pink. That may be a really sweet combo. I'm thinking a bubblegum or baby pink shade?

Yeah, if there's one color gem you can live without, it's going to be brown. lol

I like orange too but I love a soothing blue-green like your paraiba :kiss2: ! It's definitely on my wish list.

Personally I'm invisioning more of a baby pink/bubblegum color like you mentioned in rose gold (but couldn't find examples), it can possibly make the center stone pull a more rosy tone. But the zircon you posted leans much more orange so I'd honestly think either red or yellow will work better in this case! Make it an Autumn themed ring ;)2

Haha that's my bestie regarding the orange. I make an effort to wear orange when I go out with her. She asked for help buying a Spess a few years ago and I thought it was so pesky (I didn't really get orange a few years ago) but we did find her one and managed to set it as well (she bought a heart which made me cuss even more because it's hell to set with an off the shelf setting).

I’m not a huge fan of brown gems either, but I love a luscious, rich tiger’s eye. Yellow gold, yellow gems, and your zircon…that could be something else!!!

I 100% agree... first, your spinels are high grade. I don't think what I would have used would be quite so saturated. Second, your diamond is much more neutral/cool. I put my zircon next to all shades of pink and it just didn't work, unfortunately. It's too warm/orange, as you said. But I just love the combo you posted. :kiss2: Thanks for sharing!!

I am already starting to look for some red, orange, and yellow accents!!

Oops I forgot to clarify these aren't my pictures, they are actually from the vendor I bought my champagne diamond from. But it was heart shaped and same color as the asscher.

Can't wait to see what you'll come up with, I'm sure it'll be spectacular! :kiss2:

Ahh gotcha! Such a clever pairing though... thank you for showing us. I would have never thought to put those 2 together. :)

Andalusite is a great gem, and yours is lovely! I like that it is durable and untreated (with some uncommon exceptions, I believe). How will you set her (him)?

Had it for 26 years, so I don’t plan on setting it, but if I did, I would put pink melee around it.

Thank you.

It's the right shade of brownish for pink accents. Mine is not, sadly!

That's lovely! Is it the colour of the leaves on the trees when it's autumn in New England?

My gut instinct is to pair it with a vivid green gem like tsavorite or demantoid.

Oh I really like this! The color is a perfect brown shade. I only have a couple pieces that have brown and they both have brown paired with yellow and white. I guess I like that combination, lol.

Omg that leaf!:kiss2:

i havnt had breakfast yet so this is going to ramble:lol-2:

Autumn i am overjoyed :appl:you want to add brown to your wheelhouse
it is a neglected colour in fine jewlery
(i also still prefer varanished and stained furniture and joinery to painted :lol-2:)
brown goes with so much more once we start playing around and trying out combos
i mean its the colour of leather and boots and belts and glovses and fur -i feel 1940s inspired:lol-2:

for a long time i was repulsed by brown because brown was the colour of my high school uniform, brown jersey and a green/brown/yellow kilt for the first 2 years, the sports uniform was yellow and brown
(then the next two years were green jersey and the kilt)
this was durring the 80s when no one was wearing brown
the last year was mufti
so it took a long time for me to like let alone love brown as
then i went o to work and the very old firm had a brown jersery and gold trim as unifrom on our stock agents (cows and sheep not stocks and bonds)
anyway anyway ....

im not really into pink or red
although i do kind of like red garrnet with the brown undertone

but i have always loved orange
i love the autumn tones

on my old phone before it died (cant remember google account to get photos back) i had a photo saved of smokey quartz and citrine

i am on the look out for a nice smokey quartz for my rose gold setting that is now possibly too warn down to use
i love the idea of either yellow or rose coloured gold with these kind of colours, i have a pendent in smokey quartz in rose gold

i mean credit where credit is due brown is a colour and as a horse crazed kid you must have worn out all your brown felt pens first because my friends all had horses !

which makes me think did i also have an inspirational pix of a smokey quartz and amethyst ring too

i have that enhancer pendent (from the mall) of champaign diamond surrounded by white diamonds - but i have nothing to compair it to in real life and the centre diamond is small
anyway anyway ..

what about topaz for your brown?

:kiss2:

What a beautiful brown @Autumn in New England . It reminds me of this gorgeous honey / cognac colored diamond I saw on Parks Instagram. I guess I’m swimming against the crow because I think it would look amazing with an icy white halo. Regardless, I can’t wait to see what you do with it. :kiss2:

@Catmom That freaking leaf is killing it! So utterly perfect. :kiss2:

@SparklieBug and @Nick_G So funny you should both mention pairing a brown with green! When I was running through colors that were complimentary, I found that tsavs really looked lovely with it. I'm sure emeralds would too. This stone was cheap, so I'm trying not to spend too much on the accents. But we shall see. Thanks, guys!!
