I see why you love the round. It‘s classic, timeless, never out of fashion and goes with everything. But that said, keep the step cut. It‘s fantastic, unique and hard to replace. You can get a round later. There are always some around.

I get your dilemma... but I'd keep the asscher. (and I'm a round girl, 100%) It's just so large and rare. Also, the elongated shape of the ring looks nicer on your hand, IMO.

The asscher is exquisite and looks fabulous on your hand. It is more unique, and an incredible masterpiece. I would definitely keep it.

Edited to add that those specs are absolutely killer! Please consider the rarity. Truly a TDF piece.

Have you asked yourself how you would feel if it sold today? Would you feel relief and happiness about finding the next one, or regretful that you let a one-of-a-kind ring go?

Another vote for the asscher! I am not an asscher fan, in general, but I love your ring!

I think that a ring/setting can be beautiful but not exactly “right” for you. Is it perhaps something about the asscher setting that bothers you?

My original engagement ring had a halo setting and it was beautiful. It took me years to figure out I found it “too bulky” maybe because of the miligrain/triple sided pave. I often dreamt of a solitaire as well.

Try to pinpoint exactly what it is that bothers you… is it sparkle? Is it “too big?”

For my upgrade, I opted for a halo. Simple pave. No miligrain. Hoping it looks more “delicate” and suits my vision more.

I like both these rings on you. The asscher and the solitaire. The solitaire looks more “engagement ring to me” while the asscher is more “distinctive statement piece”. Maybe you need a solitaire that is dressed up a bit ?

Good luck!

Thank you all so very much for taking the time to weigh in on this. I’m truly stunned by the overwhelming support for the Asscher halo! Now that we’re past the holidays I’m going to focus on how best to move forward. Living without a ring for so long has been a bummer so I want to figure this out quickly. I will absolutely keep everyone updated!!! Happy New Year!!

Obviously I am very late to this thread, but your ring is one of my top all time favorites! It is gorgeous, unique, rare, and vastly more interesting than the other ring you showed. I happen to have a smaller OEC (AVR) and an antique asscher ring, so I understand the desire for variety. But again, your antique asscher ring is really outstanding. Under no circumstances would I reset that stone, either. I adore the setting! It's a masterpiece! (I actually have a predecessor to it that didn't have the french cuts on the halo!) It looks beautiful on you, too. I hope you keep it and make it a family heirloom!

I know you’ve always been the number one supporter of this ring and I love it!! :) :)

I think this is really good advice. Even if it is a gorgeous ring - it has to be right for you. We may all love the asscher ring, but it has to tick all of your boxes, not ours! I agree that it is an outstanding ring, but if it ends up not being right for you…don’t feel badly about it!

Voted for Asscher. The halo and the stone absolutely breathtaking. Looking gorgeous on your hand too!

Ok, honest truth, I voted for the Asscher. It is too one of a kind to let go. I really like the halo as well. But...here's what I'm sure will be a highly unpopular opinion.

I don't feel that this diamond, in this particular halo, quite vibes with you. I did some digging and saw that the last ring you had was a RB in a cushion halo. As you have noted, it is a very specific setting and is kind of a 180 from your last ring. It may be the combination that is not sitting quite right. In contrast, the 5 carat OEC is in a standard solitaire setting, which may be what you deep down are more comfortable with or prefer.

You had mentioned before that the other CVB setting, the one that @ecf8503 had, was also one of your favorites. I think that seems to be more you. I would keep the Assher, reset it, and put a colored stone in that setting. Yes, I know, highly unpopular opinion! *ducks slightly from the boos*

Of course, you can take what I just said with a grain of salt and ignore me if you think I have it totally wrong! No hurt feelings here.

If I understand right, you’ve consigned this ring twice? I’ve gone through many rings and IMHO if this was the one for you, you wouldn’t have so much ambivalence about it. Have you heard the old “if you have to ask… that’s your answer!”

And I like the round so maybe I’m just crazy!

Could you buy a massive lab diamond or cz and wear it for a week to see how you feel?

I totally appreciate this POV, as well as your research into my previous rings!! A diamond lover right after my own heart! You’re right that this whole situation is different from what I had in the past. That said, I do gravitate toward antique stones vs. modern cuts, but this was the first time I had a step cut which was an adjustment! I do think a plain solitaire would be too simple for me…but I think the real problem is that I just want all of them!!! Ha

Hi! It’s only been on consignment this one time and it’s been less than a year. I’ve just questioned that decision a few times over that period. :-) Totally get the concept about having to ask…but in my case I think it’s the curse of loving so many different styles!!

Your suggestion about a trial with another style is a good one!!

Oh gotcha! Well then maybe that speaks to misgivings about parting with it. Testing with a cheapie sounds like a good idea to me. I would also ask yourself: are you looking to make a fashion statement, own an art piece/heirloom, museum piece, etc? Like do you have an over-arching goal that could help you decide what kind of ring you want?

Myself, I wanted visual appeal, not plain solitaire (I need a little bit more) and for it to be a very timeless style. I didn’t want anything I’d get sick of. I am always changing my style so I needed something plain enough to be able to morph with me.

But I have another ring that is a piece of jewelry history to me, and I adore it for that reason as much as how it looks.

Not sure if this helps?

Haha, I was going to say this.
You know what the solution is...I think you're just going to have to get one of each! :lol-2:

Hello! It’s been a while since I have posted any updates to the forum, so I thought I would check in and ask for your opinions again. Here’s my original thread for reference.

I am still completely torn about what ring is right for me. I’ve realized that I love them all, and it will be very difficult to find one ring that checks all of my boxes!

I went to visit my antique asscher halo at Grace’s prior to the holidays, and I sometimes wonder if I should be keeping it. It’s still up for sale - she had a buyer a few months ago, but her email to me went to spam and I missed it. :|

While there I snapped some new photos with my ring and also played with the amazing 5.85 solitaire she has in stock. My ring is truly stunning, but it’s also huge and a very specific style. It’s a true work of art though… That said, I do wonder if a classic solitaire would be the better choice in the long run. I also miss the sparkle factor that you don’t see as much in step cuts. On the other hand, my asscher is pretty unique and not something you see every day. So I don’t know what to do!

Here are a couple pics from the visit. Would love your opinions on what ring you think I should go with - which one looks better on me?? Which is the style I should go with?? Someone please make this decision so I don’t have to!!
