Any Opal lovers out there? Show and Tell please.

This Victoria-inspired setting was crafted by David Klass, and holds my Mexican Cherry Opal (re-cut by Jerry Newman), my Australian Dark Opal (procured from Ryan Quantz), and my native-cut Tsavorite Garnet ... loving this happy colorful piece!

I had forgotten all about this thread. There are so many new, beautiful opals that have been added since I last visited. I love every single one of them!

I have a new vintage opal pin/brooch I can add. I love that it goes so well with my vintage opal bracelet.

I have to say, that the use of the variations in the flower petals, the detail on the flower stamen, and the delicate work with the diamonds and pearls, makes this piece the standout for me. It's gorgeous!

Thank you! I just do the sketch and layout on wax but I’m pretty lucky that I have a cousin who’s a gold and silversmith. :) He’s part of the team of 13 Lucky Monkeys who does work in the Philippines, Ginza and London. He takes the credit for the details on the precious metal work.

My latest project is a dark opal in a sterling silver pendant/brooch. I worked with Erica of AstridandRose on Etsy to make it.

I wanted something in the style of a mandala, and fairly big so that it's a statement piece, with a brooch pin as well as a bail. I would have liked gold but that would have been prohibitively expensive. It's handmade and while it's not perfectly symmetrical I like that about it.

I bought the opal from opalauctions. It's 8mm in diameter, N6 tone, from Australia. This is as close as I'll get to owning a black opal!

I posted it to Erica as this was during the middle of lockdown. She sent me sketches of her design for approval and kept me updated on the progress. Overall I'm really happy with the experience.

The pin sometimes pokes me when I wear it as a pendant, so I put a silicon earring post on it!

Wow
I finally got my opal to ring to add to the thread!

On a side note..why do some pictures show up sideways and how does one fix when they do:doh:?

=)2 Love your ring :kiss2:, may i ask where have you find it?

Thank you! I’ve fallen into the opal rabbit hole! They are so fascinating to observe while wearing aren’t they.

Oh yes, it’s as though there’s a barely contained life force swirling in the opal. I can definitely see why people were (and still are) sometimes superstitious about opals. They are simply magical.

Maybe I'm seeing things, but I think the piece with the gold marquise shaped setting at the bottom might be on the chain backwards with the front facing in. Even so I still think it all goes well together and looks great. :mrgreen2:

@prs it's an enameled pendant so it was the correct orientation...the other side is plain gold lol. Thanks for noticing!

Yes! We've seen some fantastic enameled pieces at auction but we've never been strong enough to buy, I don't know why. Maybe beautiful enamel pieces don't get the attention they deserve (David Webb excepted, of course).

Here's a few of mine. I have a few loose stones as well and one of my favourites is a chocolate opal. In the photo below, the large opal on the back row (2nd left) has a fantastic rolling blue flash which dances up and down the side of the opal and is mesmerizing.

I have a baby opal that I just got. Trying to figure out how to set it. 9A2D3223-C63F-402B-B989-7DC8CE48221C.jpeg2D39C3FB-1E04-471B-B48F-22DDC754D954.jpeg4D36F85A-21BE-4EFD-8714-F77306E1FB51.jpeg9A2D3223-C63F-402B-B989-7DC8CE48221C.jpeg2D39C3FB-1E04-471B-B48F-22DDC754D954.jpeg4D36F85A-21BE-4EFD-8714-F77306E1FB51.jpeg

Whoops sorry for the duplicate pics!

I recently had a pear Welo Opal I purchased from Barry B set in a handmade sterling silver setting made by Emma Elizabeth Jewelry. Its a lively opal that always shows a fiery and glowing orange inner light.

Second try!

Find it fascinating that opals look so different, yet all are opals.

Top: Peruvian, Mexican ‘water’ opal
Bottom: Black, Black, Mexican ‘fire’ opal

Spectacular collection!!!

Love that almost checkerboard pattern on the leftmost Opal! Beautiful big opals, all of them!

I think it’s a ribbon pattern. Really fascinating to see in movement... the colors flow in bands across the stone. Thanks and I love them too. Just took them out to play as I kind of miss opals.

Just reset my 17x12 mm orange Welo opal in rose gold. C90703F1-AB19-4EB8-9E0E-52B44894ACAA.jpeg
