Aquamarine asscher/Peter Torraca

I know what kind of setting that I want. A simple 3 stone basket setting with all the stones facing up in white gold. I have seen many that the side stones seem to face 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock or more. I do not want the side stones pointing in a different direction that the center. I thought that was due to the center stone being large. I guess I am just sort of dumb about these things. I am going to be putting it on my right middle finger which is a size 9 so I guess I can go a bit bigger without it looking huge. That is just what I am afraid of. I am afraid that it will be "honkin" and that is not what I want. I think I would decide on the mm of the setting once I know the mm of the stones. Ya know? I dont want to say money is no object, but I really have no idea what I am looking at here. I was thinking between $1K and $1500, but would love to do it for less if that is possible. If it was a little more that is ok too. This is my first time doing anything custom and I am not really sure what I am getting into.

Now that I think about it I could def. go bigger. I have a 5mmX5mm alexandrite on there now it is soooo tiny. I bet I could go 6, 7 or even 8mm as a center and be ok. Do you think I should email that to him or wait until he gets back to me.

Oh loriken, I adore that grossular garnet asscher, I bet it sparkles like a diamond! Any photos of your own of that stone?

I recently wrote Gene about getting an asscher cut, and he recommended going bigger than the 6.5mm sz I was asking about since it was his opinion that the traditional asscher cut was too busy for such a small size. If you want to go smaller, I believe there are modified asscher cuts that can accomodate smaller stones. But if you have the finger real estate and the budget, I think it''d be great to go with something a little bigger to better appreciate the windmills!

Get a dressmaker''s tape and wrap it around your finger and see just how many mm''s you''ve got to play with across the front.

The reason you see side stones pointing at 11 o''clock is because rings are round.

I think your best bet would be to e-mail Lesley Harris at Brian Gavin Diamonds. Tell her what you want, and ask her to quote you.

Meanwhile, I would wait to hear from Peter for a few more days. Maybe he and his family are away for a long weekend, it being Mother''s day etc.

Peter and I have decided to go larger with the center stone and sent me a picture of one he has already in stock. I asked about putting a deposit on it while we work out the details. As soon as I put money on it I will post a picture. I am in love already. It seems that my center will be 7.5mm and each side will be 5.5mm What does everyone think about how that will look? I drew on a piece of paper and then taped it to my finger and wore it for about an hour.

Gailey-I just want to say that your advice thus far has been invaluable to me. Thank you very much.

Drawing pictures, cutting them out, and then taping them to a finger! I''ve done that! LOL

As long as you measured right it does give you a good idea of the stone size. Sounds like it will be a wonderful ring!

You know, I was afraid to comment in this thread because PT has his fans, and that''s perfectly fine. I know many people love his work, but I wouldn''t put all my eggs in one basket. There are some other wonderful and equally fine lapidaries that cut a mean asscher, and aqua is very easy to find in that color.

Therefore, if you have a problem getting in touch with Peter, then other lapidaries that cut very fine asschers are

Jeff White whitesgems.com
Gene Flannigan precisiongem.com
Gary Braun finewatergems.com

I know that people who are really picky about precision cutting find these men to cut stones exceptionately well, and they hold these lapidaries in very high esteem.

I''m sure other people can make some suggestions to you. Good luck on getting your dream aqua.
As the resident Asscher collector around here, I have upwards of 12 total asschers now from all of the common cutters with the exception of Lisa and Barry''s modified Asscher, and I completely agree with your assessment, TL.

Gene, Gary, Jeff, Roger, Doug and Peter could all cut amazing asschers, but my preference for their traditional asscher cut is probably in the order I posted. I have loved working with them all, though.

Thanks LTP, you sure are the resident asscher queen around here! LOL!. I do recall you also saying on occassion how much you love Gene''s asschers.

I have been in contact with a metalsmith about the setting that Peter suggested and originally I told her basket or trellis. Now I am thinking bezel with the band as wide as the side stones. I am thinking it would look neat and unusual to have it look as though the stones are set directly into the gold. Would that be like a tension setting? Would it even be possible with an aqua? Would it take away from the asscher cut?

Ok, so this is kinda what I have in mind. Except aquamarines, white gold, larger asschers, and closer together. Possible? Attractive?

Sorry for the delay in replying.....I haven''t taken the beauty out of her box yet....I''m afraid that I might drop her! She''s really sparkly for an asscher!

Peter''s photos are very true to life.
