Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

I've been watching this doctor's daily videos. Please watch this one. Numbers don't matter anymore. Very informative videos posted daily. I don't know how to make this smaller!

Johns Hopkins Hospital Creates Its Own Coronavirus Test, Hopes To Test As Many As 1K Per Day

This is great news IMO! These hosptials needs to do whatever they can do. I just hope that Insurance will not try to get in the way and say it won't cover these tests.

Knowing insurance, they will try their best not to cover anything if they can.

Good. It’s about time!

I found out that they're doing drive through testing in Florida. I'm trying to find out where thats taking place.

Check what is required too. In WA, many insurance plans won't cover without Dr order.

Will do. Seems like some states these are popping up. I have not found enough concrete evidence that this is happening here yet. I'll post it for sure once I know.

My kids’ schools are closed until at least March 31. I’m really relieved. Little kids are always rubbing their noses and eyes and picking up all sorts of bugs. At least if they are home I can keep washing their hands!

I really feel for all the parents who have to scramble to find child care now though. My son’s friend’s mom has a job where, if she misses too many days, her boss will fire her.

I’m getting slightly disgusted with all the emails I’m getting from my self care providers assuring me that all is well because they are cleaning their facilities. (like the massage therapist, the hairdresser). As though the virus could not be airborne, and hey guys, you are still touching your clients after touching lots of other clients!
I understand their financial situations, but I’m not going there.

My favorite email was from a Reiki practitioner who said that she is also giving long distance Reiki so you don’t have to come in to her office.

I had H1N1 in 1999-2000 season, I had been sick since early November with some sort of cough virus thingy, then I acquired norovirus, it was hell, weeks of getting better and then relapsing, then I got H1N1 mid December 99 I thought wow! I'm feeling better! no coughing, then I went a few days later and was grocery shopping and as God is my witness I'm pushing the cart and all of a sudden I got so hot I thought I was going to faint, sweating, and within hours coughing, went to the emergency clinic, tested for flu and had H1N1, that FAST, I spent the turning of the millenium being so sick I woke up once to see a ball going down in Vegas, missed NYC entirely, then my mom died 1/8/2000 it was hell.

I don't think I can catch h1n1 again but I never want it again either. very sick.

Right???
After 2 weeks, thought I was getting better and then Wham! Round two. I guess that was common, a period of improvement and then back down. All in all, was weak and ill for 6 weeks. Awful, just awful. I take all reports of contagion seriously.

Oh, I call major BS to China on this one. “First cases reported late December.” Covered it up for weeks/months before that. The world has to hold them accountable for the delay in reporting, when the global community is put at risk, that’s unforgivable.

Just FYI: face masks are mostly recommended if you have symptoms and are trying not to spread anything.
As a preventative it’s fairly ineffective if not actually detrimental because it causes most people who aren’t used to wearing them to touch their faces more. :(

Granted if everyone wore one all the time it might help just because it’d probably happen to decrease people who are asymptomatic from accidentally spreading it. But evidence so far does not support that covid is airborne, more droplet/fomite. Hence all the handwashing!!
I find it interesting that in South Korea, government started selling 2 masks a week per person recently. They sell through pharmacies and people line up to get the masks, and even then often times masks get sold out before everyone can buy them. But still, interesting contrast to how our gov is managing thing in the US...

In Manhattan, an Asian woman was assaulted for not wearing a mask. I personally feel like if I wear a mask that might make me stand out more to be targeted, but all these stories are making me feel anxious.

I thought I remembered someone mention it here, but how much would it be to be tested? I assume they won't test you unless you have travel history or had contact with confirmed COVID-19 person?

There are 3 drive through sites on Oahu that are testing for CIVID19.
We are hoping for many more. Testing has been extremely slow and sparse in Hawaii, so we do not have an accurate count of the virus in our state.
I fully expect the numbers to skyrocket once testing is firmly in place.

The US is VERY behind on testing which is hugely problematic in terms of mitigation and containment. Other countries have large scale testing in cities. My understanding is that we are still in a situation of somewhat limited supply, hence the limitations and expenses. I believe as of now you still need a doc to recommend testing, and many docs are being told specific instructions on who to test. Instructions likely differ depending on how available the tests are to that area.

There's no longer any point in testing. It's a false sense of security, and doesn't do anything different. Stay away from people. If you have symptoms call a healthline. If you're having trouble breathing, then you go to a healthcare institution. Otherwise, you isolate at home until you're better.

Our University just moved our Spring Break from 3/30 to MONDAY, and told us no one is coming back after the break (in a physical form). We'll all teach remotely for the rest of the semester - I believe this will be the trend for most Universities in this country. What an amazing thing to be able to do. This would not have been possible when I was in college (in the 90s). I think the number of people on the online platforms will crash the platform's capability, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

It will mean about 3 times the normal workload for me to get this all ready, but that's okay. Safety first. At 3 p.m., Trump is going to address the nation about the virus, if anyone is interested in watching.

Lord help me. I just offered to open a free unlicensed daycare for the employees of the surgery center and my husband’s medical practice. At least one of my kids will be home... possibly 2.

OMG the craziness! I just needed a few things at the store. (This is a restaurant supply store I live and was near empty two days ago so I thought it would be quiet!) No traffic on the roads. Then... Parking lot insanity. Shelves are nearing bare. Sold out of rice, beans, etc. Short on many others. Luckily, the panic shoppers mostly don't know you are allowed IN the freezer so I got what I needed from the back. The line went clean across the front of the store (normal for busy) and wrapped clean up the other wall past produce (in 20+ years of shopping here have never seen that!).

Frozen meats are going, frozen fruits & veggies almost gone. Is a mess. Again.

I agree. I don’t understand why people want more testing. If someone gets fever/sore throat/dry cough, at this point I would just assume they DO have corona and act accordingly.

@cmd2014 - I was at Safeway in our area yesterday and there were stacks and stacks of toilet paper and paper towels everywhere. I guess they were getting ready for a rush. Most essentials were still on the shelf. I don’t know what it is like today because this was before the announcement of the first confirmed case. My husband was at the Co-op today and he said it was unusually busy.

My husband thought I was nuts when I bought a 6 pack of Clorox wipes at Costco the last time. He’s not thinking that now.

I don't know what is happening here. We have 3 confirmed cases, all of whom were already in self-isolation as they had traveled home from places known to have outbreaks and there is nothing to suggest that anyone else was exposed, and yet there is panic and pandemonium in certain stores here. Safeway is still pretty sedate, even though the TP and cleaning aisles are pretty picked over. But I went to Superstore at lunch to pick up a few things for dinner, and I couldn't believe the crowds. I also couldn't believe how many people were in masks and gloves (going against everything our public health officials have been asking us to do) and how many people were fighting over things. And yeah, the TP aisle was empty.

All of my work-related meetings have also now been cancelled through to the end of April at least, and we are being advised by our professional body to consider seeing people through telehealth, if possible, even if neither we nor our patients are sick. It's all a little crazy. Although I also totally understand that implementing social distancing measures now before anything breaks out is the best way to avoid overwhelming our hospitals with cases. We already typically work at full capacity, so I can't say I'm not a little concerned if we start to see numbers like Italy has had.

I'm also annoyed at DH's work. They are insisting that he still travel for meetings even though our provincial health department is asking employers to put all non-essential travel on hold. Honestly, his meetings are NOT essential. They could be done over skype. Or postponed. But no. They want him going one place next week and a second place again the week after. It's a little insane.

This is why I just placed my first order through Costco with Instacart. They are delivering in an hour. I have no desire to go out so it's worth the extra few bucks. No TP in the store but I still have 27 rolls from my last pack and 20 on the way from Office Depot along with paper towels and kleenex.

Well down here they're testing because if they tell you to stay home and you don't, you're subject to a fine and jail time. They don't reverse enhancements in FL.

The 3 is likely very misleading and a result of our limited testing thus far. I think the drastic measures are happening now because as a nation at the rate the numbers are growing people are realizing how the math is adding up and comparing to nations like iran and italy. And it's not good. We're likely passed the point of "before anything breaks out". It's likely already fairly disseminated in the community and we will be seeing/hearing more of it as it evolves in the next 2 weeks. Even if all transmission stopped right now, there will still be more hospital cases in the next few weeks as people who don't know they have it yet show symptoms and disease progression.

So it may seem drastic based on current numbers but I think based on the data we have available from other nations, and being aware of how behind we have been at aggressively testing (and likely underestimating spread by a lot), it seems like the most sensible step. Fingers crossed we're doing enough and soon enough to slow the rate.

Trying not to lose my mind! DH and DS are airline pilots. Hubs routes are almost exclusively Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. In and out of international terminals. He had H1N1 in ‘09.
I’m really trying not to freak! I think ALL planes need to be grounded for awhile.
